Chapter 3 - Chapter Three

Morning came and Clara still wasn't budging. She just sat there on the couch, arms folded refusing to speak. Ellie eventually had given up and gone home leaving Alec with the stubborn young woman.

Alec stood there looking at her.

"You know we're just trying to help." He said.

Clara nodded.

"I know and I appreciate it but I'm not talking." She replied simply.

Alec sighed sitting in front of her.

"Don't you want to go home," He asked. "I'm sure you must have family that misses you." Alec said.

Clara mentally rolled her eyes, if only he knew, she thought bitterly.

"Not particularly," She replied simply. Clara then frowned. "Got any cigarettes?" She asked.

"No and please don't change the subject." Alec snipped.

Clara secretly wanted to smile. This one was cute! She was going to have fun with him!

Alec soften his tone.

"Can you at least tell me why you jumped off the bridge?" he asked.

Clara looked down at her hands, silent, not really wanting to address that, yet.

"I… just slipped," she murmured.

Alec exhaled. "I don't believe that. I was the one who saved you, I was there. Trust me you didn't slip." He told her, bluntly.

Clara glanced at him, slightly surprised as sketchy memories of that night returned almost making her change her mind but stopped herself.

Clara just shrugged sitting back.

"Well, that's all you're getting. I'm still not talking" She said firmly.

Alec was getting frustrated. He didn't have time for this. He was tired and he still had to get to work! He shook his head.

"Fine, I've got to get to the station," He said. "You stay here and watch T.V. There's cold chicken in the fridge if you get hungry." Alec offered. He then left the room to get something from the closet.

She frowned watching him return with a pair of crutches.

"Here this should help." Alec said handing them to her.

She stared at the crutches then at him.

"Um, do you always keep crutches, around?" Clara asked curious.

He sighed.

"I broke my leg last summer," He replied. Alec grunted as he faced the hall mirror doing his tie. "My daughter Daisy convinced me a weekend of skiing would be so much fun," He grumbled. Instead, I spent two weeks with a broken leg." He muttered.

Clara smiled softly remembering the family skiing trips but that was when her mother was around.

She watched him as he started to leave but paused at the door giving Clara a warning look.

"We will finish this when I get back." He said shutting the door behind him, the lock clicking then silence, again.

Clara just sat there before whispering, a sincere thank you to the door.

Meanwhile at Torchwood Castle, Duke Oswald pacing the chamber floor anxiously. His daughter Princess Clara had gone missing and nowhere knew where she was!

"She's probably hiding." Lady Linda sighed sitting in her chair, concentrating on her knitting.

The Duke glanced at her.

"Well, no one's seen her since last night," He said. "Not even Amy." Duke Oswald muttered.

Linda shrugged.

"I say let her stay out there. She'll come around once she comes to her senses about Prince Conrad." Linda reasoned.

The Duke looked at his wife and shook his head.

"We can't do that, dear," He said. "Think of the scandal, " Duke Oswald pointed out. "Besides a young woman like her isn't safe out there especially with all that paparazzi roaming around." He muttered.

He paced the floor in deep thought trying to think of what to do. He turned towards the giant oblong shaped window staring out towards the kingdom, feeling defeated.

Everything was a mess. Ever since his wife Ellie, died his daughter, Princess Clara had been very troubled but when he married Linda, things just got worse!

She began acting out even defying his orders for her arranged marriage to Prince Conrad, a fine young man from the next kingdom and now she was just gone! The evidence showed kidnapping, but instincts simply said runaway daughter.

"I know she's out, there." He thought to himself.

"So, what are you going to do," Linda asked, her voice breaking into his thoughts. "Better hurry, the coronation is approaching soon!" She cautioned.

The Duke glanced at her. She had a point. Clara was to set be queen and there was still a wedding as well. Question was, how to handle this, properly? While it seemed like one of her tricks...still he couldn't be too careful.

The Duke then went to the phone and started dialing.

Linda looked at him curious.

"What are you doing?" She asked.

"Calling the royal police." He replied plainly.

Linda frowned.

"You seriously, don't think she was kidnapped, do you?" She said.

Duke Oswald just gave her a doubtful look before hearing the operator's voice.

"Yes, police this is Duke Oswald of New Cardiff," He said. "I like to report a possible missing person, please?"
