I digested what the old master said as I leaned back in my chair, exhaling deeply.

"It feels strange to be winning through waiting."

He chuckled softly. "That is the art of subtle war, Micah. The blade you never draw can still cut the deepest."

For the first time in days, the tension in my chest eased a bit.

"But what if they decide in his favor?" I asked.

Harun's smile faded. "Then we prepare for what comes next. But for now, go do as you usually do, show nothing different, I'll send you word again."

He rose to leave, pausing at the door. "You've done well. Keep being a bit patient."

That night, as I sat on the balcony at the back of my courtyard, I could imagine Maren laughing up and drinking with his cronies.

He thought I was on his side. He thought I would help him with his reckless task with people's lives on the line.

Good, let's keep it that way.

Because the moment the Grand Elders made their decision his plans would come crashing down.
