Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE: A Text, An Elephant And A Corpse

Something maltreats my skull with a jackhammer.

That's the first thing I realize when I slowly wake up. The second is the chilling realization that I am completely naked.

I don't remember undressing after leaving last night's party. Hell, I don't remember ever leaving the party at all. I close my eyes again and try to evoke images from the night, but all I could get were a few disjointed scraps of thought: Me, drunk on some table. Butcher's loud voice as he danced closely with some light-skinned chic. I watched begrudgingly as he pressed himself violently against her backside.

His shirt hung open, revealing smooth skin stretched over his well-built frame. Each movement emphasized the power in his arms as he held her firmly by the waist. She was laughing. They both were. Her face glowed under the pulsating lights and even then, I thought, this isn't going to end well.

BUZZ…

There it was again, that incessant sound. I glance to my bedside table where my phone rattled aggressively. I grab it sluggishly. A stabbing pain shoots through my head almost immediately, and for a moment my eyes turn black. A text glows on the screen:

Butcher: Sup bro✌. Hope you got home safe. Just wanted to thank you for last night. It was fire🔥👌. Pop quiz…How do you fit an elephant in a fridge?

I blink at the screen, irritation brewing under my headache. What an idiot.

"Good morning to you too," I muttered to myself as I typed back: "And why the fuck do you want to put an elephant in yourfridge? 😒."

The phone vibrates again almost immediately. I let out a painful grunt.

Butcher: Just answer.

I sighed and fired back a reply: "I don't know! No one fucking knows."

Butcher: You kill it. Chop it into little pieces. Separate the limbs from the organs. And place them in different containers inside the fridge. Easy.

"You need help 🖕," I texted back.

Butcher: We both do😌. Final question…

"No. Fuck you! Go back to sleep, you psycho," I type angrily. "How are you even sober already?"

Butcher: I'm not. Now will you let me ask my question?

Well that explains a lot. The screen flickered as his next text arrived:

Butcher: How do you dispose of a body?

The phone slips from my hand, landing on the bed with a soft thud. My pulse quickens, and nausea creeps into my stomach.

Oh Fuck!

I fumble to type back. "What did you do?!"

Butcher: Just answer the question.

"Stop it!" I reply hastily. "What did you do?"

There's a long pause. Each second seemed to stretch into an eternity before his reply appears:

Butcher: I'm still waiting for my answer…

I press my fingers to my temples, breathing hard. Memories of the past—incidents I tried so hard to forget—flooded back in.Fuck. Fuck. FUCK!!! I let it happen again. I should've stayed with him last night. This is my fault.

"Male or female?" I text, a lump forming at the back of my throat.

Butcher: Female, of course. What do you take me for?"

"Was it the girl from last night?"

Butcher: Yeah. She was hot, wasn't she?

My stomach churned violently at his reply. "She was only sixteen!"

Butcher: Relax. It was an accident. It's not like I meant to.

I ran my hands through my hair. "Time of death?" I type mechanically as my heart raced.

Butcher: I think around 3.a.m. We were at it all night 😈💦.

"You waited till morning?! What were you doing with body?!"

Butcher: I was still hard. Just because she's dead doesn't mean I should deny myself some sweet orgasm 😋😄."

My stomach twisted at the sight of the words. My vision became blurry and my mind began to fade. A cold sweat broke across my skin as my mind flooded with thoughts. Was this all a game to him? How could I have been so blind? I have been friends with a monster for so long and didn't even realize. Or maybe I did? My heart thundered as the truth unfurled before me. Maybe I wanted to stay in the dark—pretend as if the things he's done, the people he's hurt, never existed. Maybe… the truth was just too much for me to handle.

"What was the M.O.?"

Butcher: My kitchen knife. Multiple stab wounds.

"How many?"

Butcher: Three to the face. And like six to the chest.

I gag. The room tilts, and for a moment, I felt like I could pass out. "That's overkill!" I text, though my fingers hesitate over the keys. "What did she do wrong?"

Butcher: She asked me about her. The stupid bitch asked about my mother.

The words hit me like a speeding train. Stephanie. That name had been a shadow hanging over us for years.

Unwanted memories began to surface again. She was a large imposing figure with a sharp tongue and even sharper fists. I remember the smell of her sickly perfume that couldn't mask the stench of whiskey and men. The way Butcher's voice would falter whenever she entered the room. I remember everything. Including the things she did to him. Especially the things she did to him.

My lips tremble as I respond. "I understand. Don't do anything. I'll be there in twenty minutes."

Butcher: Thanks. One more thing…

"What?"

Butcher: Bring condoms. I'm all out from last night. I still have to punish you for getting my first question wrong 😈🍆💦.

The phone shakes in my hand as I read his words. Against all logic, a grin tugs at my lips. A deep heat pools in my stomach, and I glance down at the bulge growing beneath my blanket.

"I'll be there in ten." I reply, throwing the covers off.

Butcher: Alright 😂.
