Chapter 20 - Between the Storm and the Calm

After days of peace and rest, the truth began to loom on the horizon. Victor and Emma were sitting at the café they often visited, just as the soft morning light began to disappear behind winter clouds. Their vacation had come to an end, and both had to return to their daily lives.

Victor (with a calm look): "I can't believe the vacation is over. It felt like we were living in another world."

Emma (with a light sigh): "The peace was necessary, but we both know reality is waiting. We have to go back to work and to the roles we carry."

As they exchanged words, both of them were silently wondering how they'd face the challenges of work and the resurfacing relationships that could disrupt the calm they had just built.

A few days later, while Victor was at his office discussing work details with Mike, he felt his mind drifting. His thoughts shifted between work and Emma, and how the routine of life might start taking away too much from their relationship.

Victor (to Mike, with concern): "I feel like I've been so busy lately... What I really don't want is for us to drift apart."

Mike (understanding): "You need balance, Victor. Life is busy, but don't forget what matters most."

In that moment, guilt crept into Victor's chest. He knew he needed to make more time for Emma, but the mounting pressure from work was consuming him.

At home, Emma was feeling the same. Her job required more hours, and her thoughts were constantly on Victor.

That evening, while Victor was driving home, his phone rang. Emma's name lit up the screen. He answered quickly, still feeling the weight of the day.

"Hey, Emma."

"Victor, where are you? Don't you remember we were supposed to meet now? What happened?" Her voice carried a touch of sadness and worry.

That's when he suddenly remembered the date he had completely forgotten due to work pressure. A wave of guilt hit him hard.

"Ah... I completely forgot because of work. I'm really sorry. Send me the location and I'll be there right away."

Emma sent the location, and both their hearts were filled with hope. Victor arrived shortly after and walked quickly towards her. As soon as he saw her, he wrapped her in a tight hug, as if that moment was a shelter from everything else.

"I'm so sorry. It's been a rough day, and I truly forgot. But I'm here now."

Emma smiled gently and said:

"No need to apologize. Everything's alright."

They shared a quiet smile, and as he held her, Victor felt everything fall back into place — like he wasn't alone in facing the weight of the world.

To be continued...
