Chapter 95 - A world at war

The battlefield was a sea of black ichor and crimson earth.

Roman moved through it like a blade given form, his Archon Sword carving through monster after monster with mechanical precision. Each strike was deliberate. Each dodge was economical. He had long since stopped counting how many creatures had fallen to his blade the number had become meaningless.

But his mind was elsewhere.

His eyes swept across the battlefield even as his body fought on autopilot. Selena was a whirlwind of crimson flame, her sword dancing through the horde with the grace of a master. Jacob's blue aura blazed like a frozen star, each swing of his blade sending monsters crashing to the ground in heaps. The Presia knights fought in tight formations, their shields locked, their swords striking in unison. The Holy Paladins held their golden lines with unbreakable discipline. The artillery division also been fighting with everything they had shooting holy bullets and tanks and targeting the monsters

They were all giving everything they had.

And still, the monsters kept coming.

Roman felt it before he saw it. The dark mana was everywhere now thick, oppressive, pressing against his skin like an invisible weight. It coiled around the battlefield like a serpent, seeping into the lungs of every soldier, clouding their minds, dulling their reflexes. He could see it in the way the knights moved slower, heavier, their eyes glazing over with each passing moment.

They're being affected, he thought, his blade severing a monster's head in a single fluid motion. The dark mana is eating away at them.

He knew what he had to do.

The Fallen God's Blessing. It would protect them all. It would shield them from the dark mana, preserve their sanity, give them the strength to keep fighting.

But hesitation gripped him like a vice.

Roman had pushed his Fallen God power before. He knew its limits, its dangers. If he expanded it now if he pushed it beyond its current threshold the power would become unstable. Uncontrollable. He had felt that instability before, the way the power threatened to consume him, to turn him into something less than human.

And he couldn't afford that.

Not now. Not when the safety of the Clover Kingdom rested on his shoulders. Not when his family was fighting beside him, depending on him to hold the line. If he lost control, if the power consumed him

He pushed the thought aside and focused on the fight.

Not yet, he told himself. I'll hold on a little longer. I'll fight a little harder. I'll find another way.

His blade sang through the air, cutting down another monster, then another, then another. He moved faster, striking harder, trying to compensate for the growing weight of the dark mana pressing down on him.

But deep down, he knew.

He couldn't hold out forever.

Far to the west, in the heart of the Holy Empire of Arciana, the atmosphere was one of controlled urgency.

Pope Lucius Serapheal stood at the center of the grand chamber, his white robes flowing like cascading light, his staff held firmly in his weathered hands. Before him, the massive communication orb pulsed with the images of distant lands the gate openings spreading across the continent like a plague of shadows.

Archbishop Desmond Herman stood beside him, his aged face etched with deep lines of worry. His fingers, thin and pale, drummed against the armrest of his chair as he watched the reports flood in.

"The gates are spreading faster than we anticipated, Your Holiness," Desmond said, his voice low and grave. "Twelve major openings reported across the empire alone. The other kingdoms are reporting similar numbers."

Pope Lucius nodded slowly, his expression unreadable. "And our paladins?"

"Preparing to deploy to their designated posts. The twelve Holy Paladins are readying their units as we speak."

"Good. See to it that they reach their destinations swiftly. Every moment we delay costs lives."

Desmond hesitated. "There is one matter, Your Holiness. Captain Gabriel Velk's deployment."

The Pope's eyes sharpened. "What of it?"

"He has been assigned to the Eastern Territories. By order of the Warherald."

A heavy silence settled over the chamber.

Pope Lucius closed his eyes briefly, his lips moving in a silent prayer. When he opened them, there was a weariness in his gaze that had not been there moments before.

"The Warherald knows what he is doing," he said quietly. "Roman sees the bigger picture. The Eastern Territories have been isolated for centuries. If we are to unite against this threat, we must reach out to them. Even if they do not wish to be reached."

Desmond frowned. "But sending Captain Gabriel alone"

"He is not alone. He carries the blessing of the Empire and the authority of the Warherald. That must be enough."

At that moment, the chamber doors opened, and Captain Gabriel Velk strode inside.

He was a man built for war tall, broad-shouldered, his golden armor gleaming with the light of a thousand battles. His face was hard, chiseled from years of service, but his eyes held a warmth that belied his fearsome appearance. Behind him, Vice Captain Ezra followed, her silver hair pulled back in a tight braid.

"Your Holiness," Gabriel said, bowing deeply. "You summoned me."

Pope Lucius turned to face him. "Captain Gabriel. I trust you have been informed of your assignment."

Gabriel straightened, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly. "I have, Your Holiness. The Eastern Territories."

"You sound hesitant."

Gabriel met the Pope's gaze without flinching. "Forgive me, Your Holiness. But the Eastern Territories have rejected our aid for generations. They have killed our envoys. They have refused every offer of peace. And now I am to go there as a defender?" He shook his head. "I cannot help but wonder if I am being sent to my death."

Archbishop Desmond stepped forward, his voice firm. "Captain Gabriel, the Warherald specifically requested you for this task. He believes that the Eastern Territories must be brought into the fold not through conquest, but through unity. The situation in the east is dire. They may be our enemies, but they are still people. And people are dying."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed. "And if they attack me? If their people rise against me and my unit?"

Pope Lucius answered before Desmond could speak.

"You handle it in your own way, Captain. Defend yourself if you must. But do not kill them unless you have no other choice." His voice carried the weight of absolute authority. "We are not conquerors. We are protectors. Remember that."

Gabriel held the Pope's gaze for a long moment, then bowed his head.

"Understood, Your Holiness."

He turned and strode from the chamber, Ezra falling into step beside him.

The courtyard of the Holy Empire's citadel was a sea of golden armor.

Gabriel stood at the front of his unit which were 12 including him and vice captain ezra ,his gaze sweeping across the assembled paladin and their appertence units . They were the best of the best warriors who had been chosen for their strength, their faith, and their unwavering dedication to the cause. Their armor gleamed in the morning light, their swords polished to a mirror shine, their shields emblazoned with the sacred sigil of the Empire.

This was his family. His brothers and sisters in arms.

And he was about to send many of them into the unknown.

Gabriel stepped forward, his voice carrying across the courtyard like a clarion call.

"Paladins of the Holy Empire!"

The assembled soldiers snapped to attention.

"Today, we are called to a new battle. The gates have opened across the continent. Darkness spills from the dungeons, threatening to consume everything we hold dear. Our brothers and sisters in arms are fighting and dying as we speak."

He paused, his eyes sweeping across the faces before him.

"But this is not just a battle against monsters. This is a battle for the soul of our world. We fight to protect the innocent. We fight to defend the helpless. We fight because it is our sacred oath our duty to stand between the darkness and those who cannot defend themselves."

He raised his sword, its blade catching the light.

"Remember your oath! Remember why you took up the mantle of the Holy Paladin! You are not merely soldiers you are the shield of the faithful, the sword of the righteous, the light that banishes the shadow!"

A cheer erupted from the assembled paladins. Swords were raised. Shields were clashed. The sound of their devotion echoed across the courtyard like thunder.

Gabriel allowed himself a small smile before raising his hand for silence.

"I will not be fighting beside you," he said, his voice dropping slightly. "I have been assigned to the Eastern Territories. The Warherald himself has requested my presence there."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Gabriel pressed on.

"I know many of you harbor doubts about the people of the East. I share those doubts. But the Warherald believes that we must reach out to them that we must unite against this common enemy. And I trust his judgment." He paused. "I will do my duty. And I expect each of you to do yours."

He turned to Ezra, who stood at his side, her expression unreadable.

"Vice Captain Ezra will lead the defense of the Holy Empire in my absence. She has my full confidence and authority. Obey her as you would obey me."

Ezra stepped forward, her gaze steady. "I will not let you down, Captain."

Gabriel placed a hand on her shoulder. "I know you won't."

He turned back to the assembled paladins.

"May the blessings of the goddess be with you all. Fight with honor. Die with dignity. And remember the light will always prevail."

He raised his sword one final time.

"For the Empire!"

"FOR THE EMPIRE!" The shout echoed across the courtyard like a battle cry.

Gabriel sheathed his sword and stepped back. He turned to Ezra, his voice lowering so only she could hear.

"Be careful, Ezra. The Empire needs you."

She met his gaze. "And you, Captain. The Eastern Territories are dangerous. Watch your back."

Gabriel allowed himself a faint smile. "I always do."

He turned away and walked toward the edge of the courtyard. Behind him, the assembled paladins

began their own preparations, their voices rising in prayer and determination.

And then, with a surge of light and wind, Gabriel activated his flight magic and shot into the sky.

The others followed, their golden forms streaking across the heavens like shooting stars.

Goddess watch over them all.
