Chapter 162 - still us?

The changes were small at first.

Small enough to ignore.

A missed call.

A shorter conversation.

A message answered hours later instead of minutes.

None of it meant anything on its own.

But together—

They started to feel noticeable.

Velithra sat at the field one evening, phone in her hand.

The sky was turning orange at the edges.

Usually, this was when Kai would call.

Today, nothing came.

She looked down at the screen again.

Still nothing.

It wasn't anger she felt.

Not really.

Just something quieter.

Something uncertain.

Her phone finally buzzed.

Kai:Sorry. Today got away from me.

Velithra stared at the message.

Then typed—

Velithra:It's okay.

And it was.

But also—

It wasn't.

That was the hardest part.

Nothing was technically wrong.

No fights.

No betrayal.

No dramatic collapse.

Just distance.

Slowly becoming real.

Later that night, Kai finally called.

He sounded tired.

More tired than usual.

"Hey," he said softly.

"Hey."

For a moment, neither knew how to start.

"How was your day?" he asked.

"Fine."

"How's everyone?"

"The same."

The conversation felt careful.

Like they were both trying not to touch something fragile.

Kai noticed it too.

"You're quiet."

Velithra looked out the window.

"So are you."

A pause settled between them.

Not comfortable this time.

Not painful either.

Just unfamiliar.

Kai leaned back in his chair on the other end of the call.

"I think I'm still adjusting," he admitted.

Velithra closed her eyes briefly.

"Yeah."

Another silence.

Then, before she could stop herself—

"Do you feel different?"

The question slipped out quietly.

But once it was there—

Neither of them could avoid it.

Kai didn't answer immediately.

That hurt more than she expected.

Finally—

"A little," he said.

Velithra's chest tightened.

Not because of the answer.

Because of how honest it sounded.

"Different how?" she asked softly.

Kai exhaled slowly.

"I don't know."

He paused.

"Everything here moves fast. Every day feels full. And sometimes…"

He stopped.

"Sometimes what?"

"Sometimes it feels strange trying to hold onto two versions of my life at once."

Velithra looked down at her hands.

She understood exactly what he meant.

And that scared her.

"Do you think that's bad?" she asked.

"No," Kai said quickly.

Then quieter—

"I just think it's hard."

Neither spoke for a moment.

The truth sat between them now.

Not cruel.

Not unfair.

Just real.

Velithra rested her head back against the wall.

"I think I'm scared," she admitted.

Kai's voice softened immediately.

"Of what?"

She swallowed slightly.

"That one day this won't feel natural anymore."

Silence.

Not because he didn't care.

Because he didn't know how to promise otherwise.

Finally, Kai spoke.

"I don't want that to happen."

Velithra smiled faintly, even though he couldn't see it.

"I know."

And she believed him.

That was the difficult part.

Because love wasn't always the problem.

Sometimes—

Circumstances were.

Time was.

Distance was.

Kai rubbed a hand over his face tiredly.

"We're still us, right?"

The question sounded younger than usual.

More vulnerable.

Velithra looked out at the darkening sky.

Then answered honestly.

"Yeah," she said softly.

A pause.

"Just differently."

Neither of them knew if that was comforting.

But it was true.

And lately—

Truth had become the only thing strong enough to hold onto.
