I was startled by her sudden, unexpected response.
My brain instantly flooded with memories of all the notorious things I'd ever done, flashing like irrelevant reels and shorts.
Without wasting a single second, I quickly apologized.
"Sorry boss, I know, recently the investment volume has been shrinking rapidly, but I've already started solving the issue seriously." In a single breath, I blurted out everything that came to my mind.
She stared at me, her eyes searching mine, trying to discern the truth behind my words.
She crossed one leg over the other, then asked with a suspicious look:
"Oh really? So, what have you found? And how exactly are you solving the problem right now?"
That was all she said, but it was enough to make me sweat.
The answer to her question would determine everything. Whether I'd keep my job or be asked to leave, it all depended on what I said next.
My voice trembled, my confidence faltered. But summoning the last of my courage, I responded:
"Boss, we could revise our strategy and roll out a low-brokerage-high-return scheme to attract new investors. Also, we can collaborate with influencers to promote our services online."
Then, she suddenly stood up and began walking toward me. The sharp clack of her heels echoed in the room and unbeknownst me, my heartbeat synced with her steps.
A sinking, ominous feeling welled up inside me. **I'm done. I'm done this time.**
But instead of scolding me, she simply came close and patted my shoulder.
"Amazing! I've never believed that one would change so much just right after his wedding?" she said, her cold tone softening slightly.
"Well, it's a good thing that you're finally able to handle difficulties on your own." She paused a little before speaking again.
"By the way, I have a task for you, and I want you to take it seriously. Which means very seriously."
"Yes, Boss. I'll do my best with anything within my capability," I replied, my face regaining its previous color, even though I had no idea what that task might be.
She nodded thoughtfully.
"Good. Since you agreed, you'll be visiting several cities, especially those with potential retail investors. Don't worry, we'll send you all the necessary files. So, get ready for a long journey... beyond your cubicle."
**Do I even have a choice? I've already jumped into the pit.** I gave a reluctant nod. She didn't seem to notice or care and simply waved me off.
Back at my desk, I found the email she had mentioned. According to the message, I was being assigned to Anarken City, where I needed to coordinate with the local branch head, devise investor-friendly plans, and assist with marketing and advertising strategies.
In other words, a full six-to-nine-week trip.
So, the first thing I did was call Sarah.
I dialed her number and it connected quickly.
"Yes, darling," she said casually.
"Hey, Sarah. I'm going to be out of the city for some weeks." I paused right after saying that, letting her absorb the news.
"You're leaving now? What about your luggage? Should I pack your things and meet you at the airport?" Her voice held a hint of worry.
Her concern caught me off guard and warmed my heart. Honestly, I'd expected her to say something like**Darling, I'm busy at the salon. Can you manage on your own? But instead...**
"Are you sure it's okay for you to come? Don't you have clients at the shop right now?"
I couldn't help but ask. After all, it was Friday and usually one of her busiest days and I didn't want her to close her shop just for me.
But her next words were even more touching.
"Darling, just wait for me at the airport. I'll be there in a few hours. Send me a message with your boarding time."
She ended the call right after that.
I tried calling her back, but her line was busy; clearly, she was already getting things ready.
"Never mind. Let's just get to the airport first."
I gathered all the documents and files, then left the office.
Just then, my phone rang.
I checked the screen and found it was Kevin.
I was in too much of a rush that I didn't have time to answer, so I muted the ringer and shoved the phone into my pocket.
Even if I'd had time, I still wouldn't have taken his call.
[Sarah's POV – At the Airport]
**He should be here by now?** I stood near the lounge area, keeping a scan of the entrance.
After almost an hour, I left the luggage and walked closer to the gate, hoping to spot my husband.
And there he was.
I saw the familiar face of my husband at the entrance. James, who was coming with his laptop bag, noticed me too and walked over quickly.
As we came closer, he embraced me tightly.
"I'm sorry I kept you waiting so long," he whispered.
"No, no, it's okay. I just got here a few minutes ago. Didn't wait long as you think," I replied with a soft smile, pulling away gently and taking his hand to help him with the luggage.
After he picked it up, he hugged me again.
"Sorry, honey. I don't have much time. Take care of yourself, and if possible, visit Mom and Dad. Here, take the car key. I'll call you once I land, okay?"
He gave me one final kiss and then vanished into the crowd.
Just as I turned to leave, my phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar. Yet, I answered without thinking.
As soon as I heard the voice on the other end, my heart froze, and tears started streaming down my cheeks, uncontrollably.
