Chapter 4 - DISCOVERY

YUTA 'S POV

I stood in my state, my feet trembling as though I was suffering from a convulsion. The Vampwolf rose his head back into the air as it took in a deep breathe trying to pinpoint my location, apparently this Vampwolf was blind or maybe all Vampwolves were, either way I couldn't tell cause my so called guardian angel didn't deem it fit to inform me.

The Vampwolf turned in my direction, it seemed he finally pinpointed my scent. I had to think of something and fast, or I'd become the vampwolf's next meal.

"Think, Yuta, think!" I muttered to myself, trying to come up with a plan as I scanned the environment. My head aching with numerous thoughts.

That's when I remembered the words from my mentor Shenwo: "Danger is like a sandwich, just a bite and you would be baffled but the wonders you would find"

What did that even mean. How was that supposed to help me. I knew hiring a mentor for ten yuan was a terrible idea.

"Relax Yuta, take a deep breath and run" My senses screamed and I immediately obliged.

I took a deep breath and swiftly began to run through the forest, my feet pounding against the earth, there was no way I was dieing twice in one day. The Vampwolf gave chase, its growls echoing through the trees.

With adrenaline coursing through my veins I darted between the tree trunks, using my agility to evade the creature's snapping jaws. But deep down I knew I couldn't keep this up for much longer, my legs were a lot longer and I was faster now but he was way to big for me to avoid being trampled upon.

My feet began hurt terribly, my joints ached, my energy fading after a couple of minutes, I felt breathless and tired, it seemed my determination was not enough to keep me alive but just as I was about to give up and surrender to my fade, I saw a figure standing in the distance.

It was a woman with long midnight black hair, she was putting on leather pants and a matching jacket, and held a bat in her hand. Once she turned towards me my heart skipped, it was Aria who now looked like a normal girl, Her heavenly features were now gone even her rainbow coloured eyes were now a piercing shade brown for some reason.

Immediately she saw me, her gazed turned dark, but that didn't scare me one bit I was just simply relieved to see a familiar face.

"Aria..." I called out excitedly as I lunched towards her, my arms wide open for a hug, but unfortunately she didn't share in my excitement, her face twisted into a tedious frown.

She raised her bat up, her eyes blazing red as she swung it in my direction. My heart skipped but before I could stop myself from running forward her bat collided with my stomach and I fell to the ground groaning in pain.

"Ahh Aria!!! what was that for?" I groaned clutching on my bruised tommy.

"For all the trouble you have caused, and for ruining my life " she thundered, her voice like a crack of lightning, as she planted a punch on the face. "You are so selfish. I can't believe you sent me to this doomed just so you could punish me for not protecting you. Big deal, I am not the first guardian angel to fluck my responsibilities, others do it and guess what, they didn't get dragged into a doomed world as punishment."

I looked up at her, rubbing my bruised cheek, a mix of relief and disappointment welling up to save me.

"I-I'm sorry, Aria but you were the best alternative I had. it's was either you or a less valuable secret weapon," I stammered, trying to explain, but she cuts in, "Alternative, I will have you know I am not a tool"

"I'm sorry..." I said coming to an abrupt halt upon noticing the Vampwolf standing behind Aria, its eyes fixed on us with an unnerving intensity. "Aria..., behind you..."

"Oh shut up Yuta and stop trying to change the subject..." She yells at me but her words came to an untimely end by the Vampwolf groan.

Aria's eyes doubled in size, her limbs trembled as she stiffly turned her neck in the direction of the Vampwolf.

Immediately she came face to face with the beast, it groaned loudly once more.

Aria's expression changed in an instant. Her shock vanished, replaced by a look of great terror as she scrambled behind me for shelter.

"Protect me Yuta, I think that beast is trying to eat me" she cried, sending a cold chill down my spine. I stood there motionless, paralyzed by utter dismay.

Wasn't she supposed to be protecting me, after all that was the job of a guardian angel, was it not?.

The Vampwolf stood still at this point all it did was quietly observe us, I guess it wanted to play with it's food before eating.

"What did you say? You are supposed to be protecting me not the other way around," I thunder at her, pushing her away but her grip was strong as she clenched tighter.

"Yes, I could have but unfortunately God took away all my power, so now I am powerless all thanks to some jerk who thought it would be cool to bring his guardian angel on a suicide mission" She yelled, trembling in her boots.

"I knew it, you lied about this mission being safe, didn't you..." I accused in anger, my blood boiling.

"That's not the point Yuta, just get rid of that thing before it kills us" She said with urgency, ducking behind me for shelter.

"You're right" I said juggling my brain for answers, and fortunately something good came to mind, "I have an idea, maybe you could defeat it with your combat skills. You know, sword fighting, arrows" I suggested with a gigantic smile.

Now that I think about it, guardian angels are often known for their impressive combat skills. I'm sure she could protect us with that. It's a good thing I brought her along.

"Emm... about that... I kind of skipped combat classes..." She confessed with an awkward laugh scratching the back of her nervous, "Sorry"

In that moment my heart scattered. Of course she just had to flunked school too, why exactly did I ever put my trust in this woman, I would have been better off picking a broom as my companion.

"So basically you are useless" I said my head hung low with disappointment, "Gosh! I wish I would have chosen a stick instead"

"No need to be so rude," She grumbled with a frown "I have an idea, why don't you handle it. After all you have magical powers now"

My intrigues were immediately plagued,

"You gave me power?" I asked confused searching her excited face for answers and she nodded, "What kind of powers?"

"Emmm... What was it again...? probably ice magic..., or was it earth magic..., or water magic..." She mumbled and a dull ache erupted in my chest.

Why do I even bother with this woman, all she does is disappoint me. I bet she was too lazy to actually read through the list of powers, I am sure she just closed her eyes and choose, "Either way, it's an awesome power. You got this. Don't forget you're the hero destined to free this world from the Vampwolves so get to work"

Aria's words echoed in my mind, I was indeed the hero of this world, I was just like Roku, the brave white hair protagonist from a manga I read back in highschool.

I looked down at my hands, and for a moment, and for a second I could feel power coursing through my blood streams.

"I can do this" I said to myself as I balled my first but before I could react, Aria's voice broke through the air.

"Good luck Yuta"

I turned to her, only to spot her hiding behind a tree a couple of kilometers away. Guess she abandoned me, how typical.

Her swift moment seemed to have annoyed the beast as it began it's rampage the moment it spotted her.

It was time to act and fast. Letting out a deep breath I raised my hands, ready to cast a powerful magic spell. I opened my mouth and blurted out the first thing that came to mind "Wind magic activate" I screamed, but nothing happened.

My heart sank to my stomach but I refuse to give up, "I must have called out the wrong magic, I tried convincing myself.

"Ice magic activate" I yelled out again but still nothing, but I still I didn't relent, I tried wind and fire magic but to no avail.

No magical energy surged through my veins. No spell was cast.

Aria lied to me like she did everything else. I wasn't special or had magic powers, she was only using me.

I was just a normal human after all, standing in front of a ferocious Vampwolf.

My heart sank to my stomach, as my determination quickly transformed into terror. I froze, paralyzed by fear.

The creature's eyes locked onto mine, and I knew I was doomed. Its jaws opened wide, revealing razor-sharp fangs, as it readied itself to engulf me.

At this point there was nothing I could do but pray for a miracle, as I waited for the inevitable.

My life flashed before my eyes. I saw my childhood, my second, my second chance at life... Aria who deceived me. I cried, blocking my face with the back of my hands.

I expected to feel the beast sharp fangs burrowing into my skin but that didn't happen. I waited and waited but nothing happened.

Shocked by the puzzling silence I reopened my eyes, only to be met with by an unexpected sight:

The Vampwolf was frozen solid, encased in a thick layer of ice.

I blinked, unsure of what I was seeing.

My heart racing. How was this possible? I didn't have any magical powers... did I?

I took a step back, my feet giving way as I fell to the ground, my eyes fixed on the frozen Vampwolf, then my hands.

My heart swore with excitement and disbelief, a broad smile finding it's way to my lips.

I was now a magic caster, a wielder of ice magic. This world just got a lot more interesting.
