"Well, well." His voice was silk wrapped around a blade. "I didn't expect to find my lovely dinner companion sneaking out at night. And with company, no less."
Athena's heart hammered against her ribs, panic mixing with defiance. Damn it. Of all nights…
His smirk unfurled like a secret she wasn't supposed to hear. "What's this?" He drawled, eyes glittering as they dragged lazily over Athena, then flicked to Gary. "A midnight rendezvous? I must say, Doctor, you clean up well."
Athena's mouth went dry. "What the hell are you doing here?"
Kraven chuckled, low and dangerous. "Me? I might ask you the same thing, little dove but since you seem confused…" His eyes gleamed, sharp with meaning. "Let's just say someone was… concerned for your safety. Thought you shouldn't wander the night with only a handsome doctor for company."
Athena's head whipped toward Gary, betrayal tightening her chest. His silence was answer enough.
"You…" she whispered, fury and disbelief lacing her tone.
