Elijah Pov
I walk to the front of the jet where Gram is chatting with the flight attendant, who seems utterly captivated by him-her admiration pouring out in waves. But Gram, ever stoic, pays her no mind, and simply orders drinks for us. He has never cared much for women who aren't his fated mate.
I glance back toward the bedroom and sigh. My ribs hollow with the need to be beside her. But I know she needs time to remember who I am or at the very least, to feel like she is safe with me.
Dropping into my seat, my thoughts churn with every possible reason and every terrible what-if- right up until Gram's voice snaps me out of my trance.... "What's on your mind, man?"...
I sigh, heavy and hollow. "She doesn't remember who I am," I whisper, because anything louder feels like it would undo me...
Odin whimpers in my head. "She just needs time. Who knows what they put her through." Feeling Odin's confidence in his words as he speaks gives me a shimmer of hope.
"Would you remember yourself?" Gram teases. "Look in the mirror sometime-you're a lot different
than the mere boy you once were." Gram chuckles out as he gestures at me. I let out a small chuckle. "He's got a point, you know." Odin chimes in to give his two cents on the matter. I just roll my eyes at them. " I wasn't that small, was I?" Gram's deep laughter rings out as he tries to speak. "You were a mere twig when you were younger, a pampered little boy who's grown into a large bear of a man!".. Gram can't stop laughing after he spoke. I wanted to punch him in the arm but instead I just laughed with him, knowing he was right, letting my worries drift away....
We sit there talking about the good old days–how we used to run rampant around the pack house, to the nights we would sneak out to play in the lake by the castle grounds and all the trouble we would get in to as kids. We were settling into old memories when a faint whimper drifted from the back of the plane. I looked over at Gram, checking if he'd heard it too... but it seems he and I shared the same concern. Suddenly a scream echoes out from the back of the plane, making us jump from our seat. We dart to the bedroom. I nearly rip the door off its hinges to get inside.
Revna Pov
"RUN, MY DEAR–RUN!!!" My mother screams at me while we run through the forest with the raging fire not far behind us.... the sounds of twigs snapping under my feet as I run. Heat emanates closer to us with every step we take.
My mother halts in place, swinging me into the tightest hug she's ever given me. It seems pointless to stop when danger is so close to having us in its claws.... When she finally releases me from her hug, I could tell she had tears in her eyes. As she kneels down to face me, placing her hands on both sides of my face, she whispers to me.
"I love you, my beautiful Revvy. Never forget that. I need you to be strong now and run as fast as you can. Don't look back, just keep running." I can't understand what she is saying, "Mommy, please don't leave me" I cried out as tears stained my face. " I have to lead them away from you, but you are strong, you will make it". I shook my head, not wanting her to go. "I have to go now, be strong, my wee Revvy, and remember where you came from." She glances back over her shoulder to see the shadows start to stretch out over us as I begin to weep louder. She looks back at me, pulling me in for one last hug. She whispers, "Don't tell a soul who you are." She kisses my head and I nod to her. She looks back toward the raging fire that engulfed our home. The shadows of giant wolves were growing near. "GO NOW–RUN!!!!" she pushes me into the forest, forcing me to leave her behind. Running past some trees before hiding behind the big oak tree, looking back at my mother who was now fighting off the black shadows. It seemed as if they had control of the fire, whipping around them just before it engulfed my mother.
With one fell swoop, the fire engulfs her. Her screams ring out, sending chills up my spine. "MOMMYYYY!!!!!!!!" my scream continues as I spring upward in bed....the door flung open as Elijah burst through..fear etched in his face, rushing to my side, taking me in to his arms, as he tried to comfort me.
With the cold sweat sticking to my skin, and my breath labored, " Are you okay? What's wrong?" his calm voice landed on deaf ears as I tried to slow my racing heart. I couldn't stop the tears from flowing. I missed them so much and there was so much I still didn't understand. "Revna, are you okay?" his words were like an icy smack of reality.....
My eyes slowly lift to his. "How do you know...my...my name?" I shifted away from him, I didn't understand how he knew.. I told him I was Raven, not Revna. Was he able to tell I was lying? How did he know that wasn't my name? He looks down at his hands and sighs heavily, he was quiet for a minute before he finally speaks in a low voice "You don't remember me do you?" And as if his words awakened them, forgotten memories emerged from where they'd been buried beneath the weight of that night.
Visions of us playing in a field of wildflowers shudder into my mind like a movie. The sounds of our laughter echo through each vision like a lost song. When the fog cleared away, my eyes met his and for the first time I recognized the man in front of me not only as the man who I saw in my dream, but as my lost childhood friend. His deep brown eyes once filled with happiness, were now filled with worry and sadness. As I placed my hand on his cheek, I spoke slowly, unsure if I was still dreaming...."Elijah?" he placed his hand on mine and a sensation of home washed over me. He smiled, knowing something had finally clicked in my memories. I leaned into him as he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into his embrace. I had forgotten how much I missed my best friend, the thought brought tears to my eyes. Now he is something more to me, I can feel it in my heart.
I push myself up until I'm face-to-face with him. Our lips draw near to each other, our breaths dance together. My breath hitches in my throat when he leans in closer into me. Gram clears his throat bringing us out of our trance, my face heating up as I pulled away. He giggles at my shyness while he throws a pillow at Gram who is now laughing at us. "had to ruin the mood, huh?" Elijah scolded Gram even though he didn't seem to care that he had interrupted our small moment, "yep I don't want to see anything nasty." Gram chuckles but his words seem to bring back the heat in my face, while Elijah and Gram continued to laugh and bicker back at each other paying no mind to my redness, although it doesn't get past Willow who was now licking my face trying to calm me down I giggle at her and pet her head to let her know I'm okay, looking back at the guys I realize that Jasper isn't in the bed with us. Panic setting in, as I jump off the bed nearly knocking over Willow, I start to frantically search for him, when we all hear a woman start yelling from the front of the plane. Darting out the room, I practically shove Gram out of the way.
With Willow hot on my tail, I make it past the first two seats in the back, when I run into Jasper trying to escape back to the bedroom with a steak hanging from his mouth. The flight attendant is hot on his heels, "Jasper what are you doing?!" I scolded him as I bent down to get him, escaping my reach, he jumps into Gram's arms, feeling like chopped liver. I roll my eyes at him, as he gives me the most cheeky smile like he has succeeded in his mission, while Gram just stands smiling at Jasper, patting his head. I just shake my head at the two of them. Turning back around to apologize, I'm met with the flight attendant right in my face. "Is this disgusting mutt yours?" she spits. Before I can even form a reply, Elijah's arm sweeps back, pushing me behind him as he steps in between us. The woman's face drains of color instantly. "M-my lord, I was just--" "You dare disrespect your Luna?" Elijah cuts her off, his voice a low commanding strike that sends goosebumps racing across my skin. "N—no, my lord... I-I-I was just trying to get back the steak you ordered ..." stuttering in fear she knew she was treading on thin ice. Elijah glared at her with daggers that could kill. "That does not give you the right to be disrespectful to my mate. Besides, the meal was for them, so you can get back to your duties and leave them alone." she only nods and walks away in a hurry to leave. Elijah turns around to face me. He reaches out his hand to touch my cheek, making me flinch at his actions. He stops in his tracks to study me for a minute, with a heavy sigh, he speaks in a small voice "I won't hurt you, I promise." I stare at him for a moment, before leaning in to his hand. His smile lets me know it's going to be okay.
