Chapter 15 – The Call
AVERY >< ><
The line went quiet.
"Hello?" I said once.
Nothing.
"Hello?" I repeated, louder this time, my voice still raw from crying.
Finally, Dahlia's voice came through, shaky but dramatic, like she had rehearsed the lines a hundred times.
"What… what… what do you mean by divorce, Avery?" she stammered. "Are we in April? Tell me we're in April. This is April Fool's Day, right? Because that is the only reasonable explanation for this madness. Avery, are you trying to prank me?"
She gave a nervous laugh that grated on my nerves. "Because if this is your idea of a joke, stop it right now. It isn't funny. Please, Avery. Just stop it."
My jaw clenched so hard it hurt. My voice cracked, but my words cut through her babbling.
"What in the hell made you think I'm joking, Dahlia? Do I look like a clown to you? Have I ever called you and wasted my breath telling you a joke?"
