Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – From Shelter to Home

After finalizing the mental blueprint of the renovation, Neil felt ready to begin.

He had been planning each step in his head, from the lighting to the furniture, and now the only thing left was to bring it all to life.

Before starting, he decided to check his inventory. With a thought, the familiar glowing grid spread open before his eyes.

Shortcut bar (9 slots):

stone pickaxe, stone axe, wooden pickaxe, wooden axe, wooden shovel, stonecutter, wooden chest, stone furnace.

Neil studied the items for a moment.

"Alright," he murmured. "First things first—charcoal for a campfire."

He pulled the stone furnace from his shortcut bar and set it down in the lobby.

The furnace hummed faintly to life, its surface glowing as a screen appeared: the upper slot for material, the lower one for fuel, and the side slot for output.

He placed one block of dark oak wood in the upper slot and slid two oak planks into the fuel slot. The fire crackled and roared softly, beginning its slow transformation.

While the furnace worked, Neil decided to gather all the torches in the house. He collected two from each of the six rooms, four from the kitchen, and four from the lobby—a total of twenty torches. Perfect.

He paused, doing the math in his head. To craft twenty lanterns, he would need twenty torches and 160 iron nuggets. That meant melting down eighteen iron ingots, which gave him 162 nuggets.

Opening his crafting interface, he worked quickly: twenty torches at the center, nuggets all around—flash! Twenty lanterns appeared, leaving just two nuggets behind.

"Let's light this place up."

He placed two lanterns in each of the rooms, ten in total. Then three more in the kitchen, one in the main room, and six left over.

The glow filled the house with steady warmth, making it feel alive. By the time Neil returned to the lobby, the furnace had gone silent. The charcoal sat neatly in the output slot.

He pocketed it, then crafted a campfire using three sticks, three oak wood blocks, and the charcoal.

For now, both the furnace and the campfire went back into his inventory. There was still work to do outside before placing them permanently.

Neil headed to the kitchen. Stone pickaxe in hand, he chipped away at a corner of the roof until he had made a one-block gap.

From his crafting menu, he forged four iron ingots into a trapdoor and fixed it to the upper part of the gap. Smoke needed somewhere to escape; unlike torches or lanterns, campfires produced curling plumes that could choke a room.

He then used the stonecutter to craft six stone walls and three stone stairs. Carefully, he stacked the stone walls upward to form a chimney shaft, then placed the stairs at the base for a sturdy foundation.

Finally, he set the campfire beneath it. Flames flickered, crackling cheerfully, while smoke curled upward through the trapdoor vent.

Satisfied, Neil turned to the kitchen interior. A counter and shelving were still missing. He used forty stones to cut eighty stone slabs, then four more stones to make four stone stairs.

He placed stairs at both ends, slabs between them, forming a proper countertop. Beside each barrel, he added three more slabs and finished with two stairs, creating tidy storage shelves.

When everything was in place, Neil stepped back and admired his work.

"Now it looks like a real kitchen," he whispered.

Encouraged, he moved to the six other rooms. In each, he installed two shelves, one atop the other, each five blocks long. By the time he finished, sixty slabs were gone.

Next came the lobby. This would require the most effort. He began by crafting sixteen iron trapdoors with sixty-four ingots, placing four in each corner of the roof. Then he focused on the roof itself.

The lobby measured thirteen by thirteen blocks—a total of 169 blocks to cover. The trapdoors already covered sixteen, leaving 153. With six slabs left over from before, the number dropped to 147. He would also need five blocks for lantern hangers, reducing the count to 142. Since each stone produced two slabs, seventy-one stones would suffice.

Neil crafted the slabs and set to work, carefully laying them one after another until the roof was fully covered. At each corner and in the middle he placed a solid block, then hung a lantern from it. The lobby filled with a golden glow, warm and welcoming.

It was time for a centerpiece—a table large enough for his entire family.

His family numbered twelve in all:

Grandpa: Eldrin Frostwood

Grandma: Linnea Wintermere

First Uncle: Kael Frostwood

First Aunt: Seraphina Meadowlight

Elder Brother: Orion Frostwood

Elder Sister: Lyra Wintermere

Second Uncle: Rhys Frostwood

Second Aunt: Astrid Stonehaven

Elder Brother: Caspian Frostwood

Father: Anil Frostwood

Mother: Maya Wintermere

Himself: Neil Frostwood

With them in mind, Neil placed a single stone block in the middle of the lobby, then surrounded it with eight slabs to form a wide table.

From the stonecutter, he carved twelve stone stairs and placed three on each side, crafting sturdy chairs. At last, the room felt like the true heart of their home.

Only one task remained: the main entrance.

The old wooden door was flimsy. Iron doors would be stronger—though they required a redstone source to open, the security they offered was unmatched.

Neil stepped outside. The sun blazed high overhead, and the sounds of training filled the courtyard. His family was still practicing, sweat running down their brows as his grandparents pushed them hard.

Noticing Neil, they slowed and gathered near the house. It was nearly lunchtime anyway. They walked over, their clothes damp from exertion, curiosity shining in their eyes.

"Is it finished?" one of his brothers asked.

"Can we go inside now?" his sister added, excitement brimming in her voice.

Neil smiled faintly. "Almost. The renovation inside is complete. All that's left is the door. Rest a while—I'll finish it, then we'll go in together."

His family settled on the grass while Neil set to work. Pulling out his stone axe, he dismantled the wooden door piece by piece until it broke down completely, then stored it in his inventory. Using six iron ingots, he forged two iron doors and fixed them into the doorway.

The metal gleamed, catching the sunlight. His family gasped in amazement. No matter how many times they watched Neil work, it never failed to astonish them.

For the final touch, Neil used four unused wooden slabs he had noticed earlier in his inventory. With them, he built a small vertical roof above the entrance, then hung one of the spare lanterns on its side.

He stepped back. The work was done.

The renovations were complete.

Seeing Neil finally stop, his family leapt up eagerly. Their eyes shone with excitement—they couldn't wait to step inside and see their home reborn.
