Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 – After the Ash

Rumi POV

The air after a fight is never truly quiet.

Not with the ringing in your ears, the pounding in your chest, the hum of energy in your bones that doesn't know the battle's over yet.

The Star-Veil was fading, its silver lattice dissolving back into the pale blue of morning. The honmoon above glowed solid again — no cracks, no strain — its light almost gentle compared to the chaos it had witnessed. The sunrise painted the city in gold and gray, but it still felt too bright for what had just happened.

Around us, the crowd was still roaring. Half of them had their phones up, screaming into live streams, convinced they'd just seen the concert of the year. The other half… I wasn't sure they even remembered what had happened at all. Hypnosis doesn't always let go cleanly.

Sable had vanished the same way he'd arrived — with that strange folding ripple in the air, like the world itself had flinched. One second he was there, still breathing hard, eyes scanning the field like he didn't trust the silence; the next, gone. No flash. No threat. No sudden retreat.

Just… after giving us a single, small wave goodbye.

Zoey was still catching her breath, hair sticking to her face, while Mira wiped demon ash off her jacket with brisk, irritated swipes.

"You think he'll actually come?" Mira asked, her voice flat, but her eyes sharp on me.

I glanced at the scrap of paper in my hand. His handwriting was sharp, almost impatient, like each number was a command. "He told me to call him."

"That wasn't my question," she said, but there was a faint smirk tugging at her mouth.

I closed my hand around the paper. No, I didn't know if he'd show up. But I did know something — the way he'd stood in front of that fire, the way he'd ordered me to run, and the way he'd smiled — faint, but there — when I told him to be careful.

He wasn't just here for the fight.

And that worried me more than anything.

Sable POV

The ripple unfolded in reverse, and I stepped into the dim quiet of my hotel room. Same old walls, same stale air, same king-sized bed I'd been paying for without actually sleeping in.

The runes I'd carved into the wood floor were still there — a perfect ring of shifting symbols that pulsed faintly under my boots. I stared at them for a long second, then let out a slow sigh.

"Almost ready," I muttered to myself.

Reaching into the pocket space, I pulled out a metal cylinder etched with more runes — colder, sharper than the ones on the floor. I set it on the nightstand beside the bed, its faint hum joining the quiet in the room.

Then I finally let myself drop onto the bed, limbs heavy, head sinking into the pillow. For the first time in days, I wasn't thinking about the next move.

Just about closing my eyes.

And for now… that was enough.
