Chapter 3 - The Unveiling of Stats

The morning sun was already high in the bright blue sky. Its fierce heat began to soak through the thin tin roof of the small, one-story house in Dasmariñas.

Tristan woke up slowly. The first thing he heard was the cheerful sound of his mother humming a song in the kitchen. The rich smell of fresh coffee and the salty scent of fried fish filled the air. It was a warm, comforting smell that made his stomach rumble.

Tristan turned his head and looked at the small plastic clock hanging on his bedroom wall. The hands showed 10:00 AM.

His eyes went wide for a second. Ten o'clock? He had slept for almost twelve hours! Usually, his parents would have called him to wake up early, but today was Saturday. There was no school at Dasmariñas National High School. He did not have to put on his uniform. He did not have to take that long, painful walk with legs that felt like heavy wooden logs.

He lay still on his thin foam mattress for a few minutes. Every single muscle in his body felt sore. His thighs, his calves, his arms, and his stomach were all tight and aching. Yesterday had been the hardest day of his entire life. He had pushed his body past its absolute limits. He had run ten whole kilometers in the freezing early morning wind, and he had completed ten push-ups, ten sit-ups, and ten squats before the sun went down.

Yet, as he lay there staring at the wooden ceiling, Tristan did not feel sad or regretful. He felt a quiet, powerful sense of victory in his heart. He had actually done it. He had faced an impossible task and survived.

He looked around his dark, small bedroom. The glowing blue light that had been hovering in front of him yesterday was gone. The air was totally empty.

A sudden wave of cold fear washed over his chest. His heart began to beat fast. Was it all a dream? Had he just suffered from a crazy hallucination brought on by his silly wish at the mossy well in the town plaza? Was there really no magic system at all?

"System?" Tristan whispered softly. His voice sounded small and uncertain in the quiet room.

Nothing happened. The air stayed empty.

"System," he said again, sitting up quickly. The fear in his voice was real now. "Show me my status!"

Suddenly, with a soft, sweet electronic chime that sounded directly inside his head, a bright blue screen materialized out of nowhere. It hovered quietly two feet in front of his face. The soft blue glow was faint in the bright morning sunlight coming through his window, but it was completely solid and real.

Tristan let out a long breath he did not realize he was holding. He covered his mouth with his hand to keep from laughing out loud. It was not a dream. The magical system was still here.

He leaned closer and read the bright white letters glowing on the screen.

STATUS

Name: Tristan Herrera

Age: 14

Points: 10

Tristan stared at the number ten. Ten points. That was his reward for completing Mission 1. Yesterday, when he was dying of tiredness on the dusty road, he did not really understand what points were for. But now, he knew that points were the key to getting better.

He looked down at the screen, and as if reading his thoughts, the text scrolled down to reveal a list of numbers.

PHYSICAL STATS

Speed: 25

Acceleration: 12

Strength: 8

Vertical Jump: 11

Stamina: 13

Agility: 21

Tristan stared at the numbers for a long time. He felt a strange mixture of surprise and understanding. These numbers were a complete map of his physical body. They showed his exact weaknesses and strengths without any lies.

He had always known he was not strong. He knew his vertical jump was weak because he could barely touch the net on the basketball court, let alone the metal rim. But seeing his physical limits written down as cold, hard numbers made him feel a little embarrassed.

He looked closely at each number.

His Speed was 25 and his Agility was 21. These were his highest numbers. That made total sense to him. During pickup games at the barangay court, he was always fast. He could run fast on fastbreaks and change directions quickly to dodge older defenders.

His Stamina was a low 13. That explained why running ten kilometers had nearly destroyed his lungs and caused him so much pain. His gas tank was tiny.

And then there was his Strength. A pitiful, embarrassing number 8.

Tristan shook his head. Eight! That was why boys like Marco and the other players could easily push him out of the way when he tried to drive to the basket. He was all thin skin, sharp bones, and wiry arms, with almost no real muscle.

As he stared at the screen, a small white box began to blink at the very bottom of the holographic display.

"You have 10 points to spend. Would you like to upgrade your stats?"

A sudden jolt of pure excitement shot through his chest like electricity. This was it! This was what the system was all about! He could actually use his earned points to raise his numbers. He could level himself up in real life, just like a character in a video game. But instead of a digital character on a television screen, the person getting stronger was him, Tristan Herrera!

He focused his mind on the blinking box. The screen changed instantly, showing a small plus sign (+) next to each of his physical stats.

He paused to think carefully. He had ten points. How should he use them? Should he make his Speed even higher so he could run super fast? Or should he fix his terrible weaknesses?

He remembered how much he had suffered yesterday during his long run. His chest had burned, his head had throbbed, and his legs had turned to jelly. If he wanted to survive future missions, he needed a bigger gas tank. He needed more energy and endurance.

'I need Stamina', he thought firmly.

He focused his mind on the Stamina stat. He mentally pressed the plus sign seven times, adding seven of his ten points to Stamina.

The number on the screen shimmered, dissolved, and reformed into a new number.

Stamina: 13 -> 20

The moment the number changed to 20, something incredible happened inside his body.

It did not feel like a violent shock. Instead, a wave of soothing, magical warmth flowed from the center of his chest all the way down to his arms, legs, and toes. The heavy, burning soreness in his thighs immediately faded away, turning into a dull, light feeling. His lungs felt wider, as if he could breathe in twice as much air with every breath. The tiredness that had been hanging over his head all morning vanished completely.

It felt like his body had been a rusty old motorcycle with dirty oil, and suddenly someone had put a brand new, powerful engine inside it. He felt light, refreshed, and full of energy.

Tristan smiled widely. He looked back at the screen. He still had three points left.

Now he looked at his lowest stat: Strength, which was sitting at a weak number 8. He knew that if he wanted to play real basketball, he could not be a weakling. He needed to be strong enough to hold his ground under the basket. He needed to be able to jump and shoot without getting knocked down.

He focused on the Strength stat and added his remaining three points to it.

The screen shimmered again.

Strength: 8 -> 11

This time, the physical change was subtle, but he could definitely feel it. He felt his stomach muscles tighten slightly. He lifted his right arm and flexed his bicep. The muscle felt a little firmer under his skin, less like a soft stick and more like solid wood. Eleven was still a low number compared to other players, but it was three steps higher than where he started. It was real progress.

The screen refreshed, showing his updated profile.

STATUS

Name: Tristan Herrera

Age: 14

Points: 0

PHYSICAL STATS

Speed: 25

Acceleration: 12

Strength: 11

Vertical Jump: 11

Stamina: 20

Agility: 21

Tristan closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. A feeling of pure, unshakeable hope filled his heart. The wish he had made at the old stone well was real. The system was giving him a real path to change his life.

With a silent thought, he dismissed the screen. The blue light faded into nothingness.

Tristan swung his legs over the side of his bed and stood up. Yesterday, standing up had caused him to groan in pain. Today, he bounced up effortlessly! His legs felt light and strong. He felt more alive than he had in months.

He opened his bedroom door and stepped into the small living room. His mother was sitting near the kitchen table, folding clean towels. When she heard his footsteps, she looked up with a warm, loving smile.

"Look who is finally awake!" his mother said in her gentle voice. "Sleeping until ten o'clock on a Saturday! You must have been completely exhausted after your crazy morning run yesterday." She gave him a playful, curious look, still wondering why her quiet son had suddenly decided to become a marathon runner.

"Good morning, Ma," Tristan said, giving her a big, genuine smile. "I feel great today. Really great."

"Well, since you have so much energy now, can you help me with the laundry out back?" she asked, wiping a spot of sweat from her forehead.

"Of course, Ma!" Tristan answered without a single second of hesitation.

Their family's small laundry business was a very hard, exhausting job. Neighborhood families brought large sacks of dirty clothes to their house, and his mother spent long hours scrubbing them by hand in large plastic tubs.

Tristan walked out to the small concrete yard behind their house. There were three giant, woven sacks filled with heavy, wet laundry waiting to be moved to the clotheslines.

Usually, carrying one of these heavy sacks was a huge struggle for Tristan. He would have to bend his back, drag the bag across the ground, and huff and puff from the weight.

He walked up to the largest sack, wrapped his arms around it, and lifted.

To his complete surprise, the heavy bag lifted off the ground smoothly! It still had weight, of course, but it felt noticeably lighter than before. His new Strength stat of 11 and his Stamina stat of 20 were already working in the real world! He carried the heavy sack across the yard without stumbling or losing his breath.

His mother walked out behind him carrying a bucket of clothespins. Her eyes went wide when she saw him easily holding the giant sack.

"Ay, Tristan!" she exclaimed, looking at him with surprise and pride. "Look at you lifting that big bag all by yourself! You are really growing up big and strong, my son."

Tristan smiled, keeping the secret hidden deep inside his chest. "I am trying, Ma," he said happily.

For the next two hours, Tristan helped his mother with the laundry under the hot morning sun. He carried heavy buckets of water, rinsed wet blankets, and hung clothes up to dry. In the past, doing this kind of heavy chore for two hours would have left him gasping for air and complaining of a sore back. But today, thanks to his upgraded Stamina, he worked continuously without feeling tired at all. His body just kept moving smoothly.

When they were finally finished, his mother wiped her hands on her apron. She reached deep into her pocket and pulled out a worn fifty-peso bill.

"Here, Tristan," she said, pressing the money into his hand. "Go to the sari-sari store and buy yourself some merienda. Get a cold soda and some bread. You worked very hard today."

Tristan looked down at the crumpled fifty-peso note. He knew how hard his mother worked for every single peso. He knew his father drove his tricycle for hours in the dirty city air just to bring home a small amount of money.

He tried to push the money back into her hand. "No, Ma, keep it. You need it for our food or for the electricity bill."

His mother shook her head firmly and pushed his hand back. "No, my son. Take it. You earned it. Besides, a boy who wants to be a basketball star needs to eat well so he can grow tall and strong."

Tristan felt a warm rush of love and gratitude in his chest. His parents always supported him, even when his dreams seemed silly and impossible. He took the fifty-peso bill, kissed his mother gently on her cheek, and said, "Thank you, Ma."

He walked back into his small bedroom. He did not plan to spend the money on junk food or soda. He placed the fifty-peso bill safely inside a small wooden box on his desk where he kept his savings. He wanted to help his family, not waste their hard-earned money.

He sat down on his wooden chair. He wanted to check the system one more time to see if anything else had changed.

'System', he thought.

The blue screen appeared instantly in front of him. This time, there was a bright green exclamation point blinking at the top right corner of the screen. Tristan focused his eyes on it. The screen shifted, opening a new menu.

NEW MISSION AVAILABLE

MISSION 2: FUNDAMENTAL TRAINING 2

Objectives:

- 50 Push-ups

- 50 Sit-ups

- 50 Squats

- 50 Kilometer Run

Time Limit: 7 Days

Failure: System Deletion

Reward: 10 Points

Tristan read the words carefully, his heart beating with a steady, strong rhythm.

Fifty kilometers! That sounded like a terrifyingly huge distance. It was five times longer than the run he had done yesterday.

But then Tristan looked at the next line: Time Limit: 7 Days.

He quickly did the math in his head. Seven days meant he had a whole week to complete the task! Fifty kilometers divided by seven days was about seven kilometers a day. Seven kilometers a day was much easier than running ten kilometers in one frantic morning!

And fifty push-ups, fifty sit-ups, and fifty squats over the course of a whole week? That was less than ten of each per day!

The system was giving him a bigger challenge, but it was also giving him the time he needed to complete it wisely. It was teaching him how to train like a real athlete consistently, day after day, without breaking his body all at once.

A strong fire burned brightly in Tristan's eyes. The threat of System Deletion was still there, glowing like a sharp warning, but he was no longer terrified of it. He knew he could do this. He had better Stamina now. He had more Strength. He was not the same weak boy he was two days ago.

'I will finish this mission', Tristan vowed silently to the glowing screen. 'I will get those ten points'.

With a simple thought, he closed the system window.

He looked at his schoolbooks lying neatly on his desk. Instead of going out to play or loafing around, Tristan pulled his notebook closer and opened his Science textbook. He began to read his lessons and do his homework for the upcoming week.

His mind felt surprisingly clear and sharp. The physical upgrade to his body seemed to make his brain feel more focused too. He finished his homework quickly, taking neat notes and studying his lessons carefully. He was determined to be better at everything not just on the basketball court, but in the classroom as well. He wanted his parents to be proud of him in every single way.

The rest of the afternoon passed quietly and peacefully. The hot sun slowly moved across the sky, turning into a soft orange glow as evening approached.

At seven o'clock, his father came home from driving his tricycle. His father's shirt was dark with sweat, and his face looked tired from the long hours on the noisy streets of Dasmariñas. But when his father saw Tristan sitting at the table, he gave his son a warm, tired smile.

"Good evening, Pa," Tristan said, standing up to kiss his father's hand in respect.

"Good evening, Tristan," his father replied, resting a heavy, warm hand on Tristan's shoulder. "Your mother told me you helped her a lot with the laundry today. Thank you, son."

"It was nothing, Pa. I want to help," Tristan said sincerely.

They sat down together as a family to eat dinner. They had warm white rice, hot soup, and vegetables. They talked about their day, laughing together at simple jokes. Tristan listened to his father talk about the funny passengers he had driven around the city. Looking at his parents' tired but happy faces, Tristan felt more determined than ever. The system was a secret magic, but his family was the real reason he wanted to succeed.

After dinner, Tristan helped clean the dishes. He took a quick, refreshing shower and got ready for bed.

He climbed onto his mattress and pulled the blanket over his body. His muscles were completely relaxed. The painful aches from yesterday were gone, replaced by a comfortable, healthy tiredness.

He closed his eyes and looked forward to tomorrow morning. Tomorrow was Sunday. He would wake up early at 5:00 AM, put on his old sneakers, and start the first seven kilometers of his new fifty-kilometer mission. He would also go to the barangay basketball court later to see Marco and test his new body on the hardwood floor.

As he drifted off into a peaceful, deep sleep, Tristan did not dream of missing shots or sitting alone at the end of the bench.

He dreamed of running fast down a shiny basketball court. He dreamed of leaping high into the air, higher than anyone else, and driving the orange ball cleanly through the net. He dreamed of thousands of fans cheering his name in a huge, bright arena:

Tristan Herrera! Tristan Herrera!

He knew he was still at the very beginning of a long, hard road. There would be more pain, more sweat, and harder missions ahead. But for the very first time in his life, Tristan was not afraid of the future. He had a system. He had a clear path. And he had the fire inside him to keep moving forward, one step at a time.
