The skin finished its work in silence.

It had spent the last unknowable interval consuming and reforming, pulling what remained of Ren's scattered biology back into a coherent shape. Now it stood upright: a smooth human silhouette, featureless from crown to sole, the surface unbroken. No seams. No details. Just form, as if someone had described a person to a sculptor who had never seen one.

Then it stopped.

Ren became aware of the stoppage gradually, by increment, until the absence was total. No vision. No sound. The clinic's ambient hum: gone. The subsonic pulse the grafting room always carried: gone. His skin reported nothing. Temperature: absent. Pressure: absent. The proprioceptive awareness that tells a body where it sits in space: gone.

He could not move.

He reached for his hand and found nothing to reach with. Tried to draw breath and had no lungs to draw it through. He existed without any of the channels through which existing had previously made itself known.

Okay. The clinical register, the one he reserved for situations requiring immediate triage. This is the fifty percent. Except the fifty percent was supposed to be death, and this is something else.

Panic arrived. He diagnosed it and it arrived anyway. There was nothing to grip, no surface to orient by. Pure sensory void carries its own pressure, a weight that comes not from presence but from the complete absence of input, pressing inward from every direction simultaneously.

No. No. No. No.

The thought repeated without his choosing it.

Then the voice arrived, not from a direction but from the same location as his thoughts, somewhere behind his awareness.

Please choose one Law to comprehend.

Three options presented themselves as concepts with weight, like three doors in a building he could not see.

The Law of Obsidian. Defined edges. The boundary between self and everything else made into force.

The Law of Plague. Entropy made active. The end of things accelerated.

The Grand Law of Madness and Depravity.

This third one differed from the others. The first two carried the settled quality of categories that had existed long before he arrived. The third felt responsive. It felt like it had been waiting.

Ren formed his choice deliberately, measuring the margin before committing, the clinical pause before a first incision. He reached for the Law of Obsidian.

Something larger redirected his reach.

He felt his intention leave his control, felt it steered toward the third option with the unhurried certainty of a tide moving a piece of driftwood. His choosing hand was no longer his.

No. I didn't choose that.

Selection confirmed: Grand Law of Madness and Depravity.

That wasn't me.

Ritual Initiated.

The information arrived in a block, delivered in a voice that predated the concept of voices.

Speak the name of His Majesty, the King of Madness and Depravity. He shall grant your qualification. He shall grant you illusions of experience. One thousand pleasures. One thousand sadnesses. One thousand angers. Death, one thousand times. Endure without losing your mind. Preserve your consciousness before the madness consumes it and comprehend the Law. At the final moment: look directly at Him. Do not die.

Ren processed this inside the void.

"This," he said, to no mechanism of saying, "is more than a human can endure."

"Fuck."

He spoke the name into the dark: "Hastur."

The ritual began.

. . .

Pleasure came first, at the scale of a Law.

It did not fill him. It replaced him. Every comfort his nervous system had ever catalogued, every relief after pain, every warmth, every instance of beauty perceived and held, every connection felt between himself and another person, every moment of satisfaction after hunger or resolution after fear: all of it arrived simultaneously and at a magnitude bearing no relationship to anything he had experienced. A tide replacing the cup that was meant to contain it.

He felt his identity dissolving at the edges.

He grabbed at his own consciousness and held, the grip going numb under continuous pressure, arms burning in a metaphorical sense because he no longer had arms.

The first thousand passed.

He was still there. Fractionally less, but there.

Sadness arrived without announcing itself as a transition, because pleasure and sadness were the same surface seen from opposite angles. This time it was every loss he had accumulated or would accumulate, delivered without sequence. Not grief for one person or one failure, but grief as a structural property of existence: the fact that everything formed would dissolve, everything loved would become past tense.

He felt himself tearing.

Something in the space behind his awareness registered this and moved.

System intervention active. Emergency stabilization.

The System entered the tear directly, purposeful and without ceremony, the computational equivalent of a hand inside a wound: it braced against the dissolution and held. The sadness continued at its full magnitude. Something now stood between Ren and permanent damage, not blocking the experience but keeping it from becoming structural.

He endured.

The anger was worse than either.

Anger at the scale of a Law was not emotion. It was the pre-destruction charge, the resistance of things that exist against being ended. One thousand of them, each complete, each entire: every instance in every history of something smaller broken by something larger that had no reason except capacity. He felt his humanity tearing at its seams.

Consciousness damage detected. Increasing stabilization output.

He could feel the System under load, processing faster than it was built to process, forcing his identity into coherence each time the anger pulled it apart. Surgery performed on a moving subject. Precise and brutal, and keeping him alive by the margin of what was technically possible.

He held on.

Death arrived last. Ren had spent his previous life learning its geography from the near side. One thousand deaths still undid him.

Each one was complete. Each had a before, an interior, an after. The after was singular every time, which was the worst part: one death could not teach you the rule of death because there was no rule. The ending of any specific person was unrepeatable, each time, and no framework made it navigable.

He understood something in the fourth hundred that he suspected was the point.

Death was not the opposite of life. It was the other side of the same surface.

Skin, he thought, and almost laughed.

The Law he had already mastered bled through the ritual, offering purchase where nothing else remained. The membrane between inside and outside. The boundary defining self from not-self, alive from ended. Death was a surface too, and surfaces could be comprehended.

He held that thought and climbed it.

Stabilization holding. Host survival probability: 61%. Increasing.

That started lower, Ren thought.

It did. You were at 34% for most of the anger sequence. Stop distracting yourself.

Are you scared?

The System did not answer immediately.

Then, in a register it had never used before, something under the computational surface that had no good name:

Just don't die.

. . .

The injection hit.

Something entered him from the inside, not through any channel he could name, pushed directly into whatever constituted the substrate of his consciousness at that moment. Cold. Precise. Chemical in a sense that had nothing to do with chemistry. He felt it propagate through the dissolving structure of his mind as a scaffold going up inside a building that is already collapsing: brace by brace, connection by connection, each one burning as it locked.

He screamed.

The void absorbed it without record.

He had experienced pain at scales throughout this ritual that exhausted the language for pain. This was different from all of it. This was the pain of something being forcibly held together that wanted to come apart, every connection in his cognitive architecture braced and held by something exterior to him, the resistance of structure against dissolution.

"This is more than a human can endure," he had said, at the beginning.

He had been right. A human could not endure it. What was enduring it now was something adjacent to human, something that had been through the Law of Skin and the soul ocean and one thousand deaths and had come out the other side still calling itself Ren Hector because nobody else was available to be.

HOST SANITY CRITICAL.

EMERGENCY STABILIZATION COMPLETE.

Sanity: restored. Margin: insufficient for comfort.

The void stopped pressing.

Ren remained in it, unmoving, while his mind ran its own version of a post-op check. Identity: present. Memory: sequential. Language: functional. The part of him that made jokes was present and had several prepared, which he took as a good sign and filed for later.

System damage: significant. Recovery period required.

You're welcome, the System added, in a tone that was trying very hard to sound unbothered and not entirely succeeding.

"You used your last one," Ren said.

I had one. You needed it. The math wasn't complicated.

He sat with that.

The void was quiet now. The ritual instruction still hung in the space around him, the same voice that predated voices:

At the final moment: look directly at Him. Do not die.

He had survived the thousand experiences. He had held his mind together by the margin of a System injection and a list of his own name. He had comprehended the outermost edge of the Law, barely, by a fraction that the instruction had called sufficient.

But the final step was still ahead.

The King had not yet appeared.

Speak the name, the ritual had said at the beginning, and he had spoken it, one word dropped into the void.

Something had begun to turn in response. He had felt it, a vast reorganization at the periphery of the dark, the gravity field preceding the arrival. Then the near-madness had consumed him before the arrival completed, and the System had pulled him back.

The turn had paused. It was still there. Still oriented toward him, waiting.

He understood something now that he had not understood before the thousand experiences, something the 1% comprehension of the Law had deposited in him along with everything else. The name was not one word. One word was the first syllable of a longer utterance, the key that unlocked the door but did not open it. To bring the King fully through, to complete the ritual and look at him directly as the instruction demanded, he needed to speak the full name.

He knew it.

He did not know how he knew it. The knowledge had arrived with the Law's edge, compressed inside that fraction of comprehension, a package he was only now unwrapping.

Ren gathered what remained of himself. The edges of his identity still felt raw, handled roughly, like skin after a procedure. He breathed, or performed the interior equivalent of breathing, and steadied.

All right, he thought. Let's finish it.

He opened his mouth in a space that had no mouth, and he chanted.

The King in Yellow.

The Pallid Sovereign Beyond the Final Veil.

The Baleful Beacon That Beckons All Souls unto Madness.

The Primordial Wellspring from Which All Madness Flows.

The Incarnate Majesty of Depravity.

Lord of Carcosa, Where Even the Stars Veil Their Light.

The Dream-Sovereign Whose Slumber Unravels the Tapestry of Reality.

The Shepherd of the Lost, the Keeper of the Forgotten, the Monarch of the Never-Were.

The Unspeakable Name Before Which Reason Withers and Creation Falls Silent.

Hastur, the Eternal King in Yellow, the Wellspring of Madness, the Apotheosis of Depravity.

The void went very still.

Then, from the direction that had no direction, something vast began to turn.
