Chapter 9 - Awakening Trial 2

Jon went up to the wall, trying to keep calm.

He had waited for this moment his whole life, but when that moment finally came, he couldn't help but feel nervous.

Did he possess a unique physique or not?

The answer would determine whether he would be able to get revenge for all the wrongs he had suffered.

"Unique physiques are hereditary. Descendants of battle masters have a much higher chance of being born with one. You were born to battle masters, so there's a hundred percent certainty you have a unique physique. The only thing that remains uncertain is what quality it will be," Mordgeist explained, extending this warmth to Jon only because of Melody.

Jon placed his hand on the wall.

Ten silver stars appeared on it.

After that, the wall returned to normal.

"Jon. Peak low grade magic physique, only a step away from decent magic physique. In your lifetime, you can advance to the early stage battle master, with a low possibility of breaking through to the intermediate stage," Mordgeist announced his result.

The first thing that crossed Jon's mind was that it was not enough. Taking his revenge suddenly seemed distant. However, it was better than anything.

Sulking inwardly and smiling outwardly, he walked back to Melody, who congratulated him heartily.

"I am not as good as you or even my half brother. Why even bother congratulating me?" Jon said, self mockingly.

"I don't care. It's just good that you can become a battle master of the intermediate stage. We will be together for a majority of my lifespan," Melody was speaking as if she was certain he would become an intermediate stage battle master. Jon knew what that meant. She would help him progress in the future.

"If everything goes as you want, how will you spend the last fifty years of your life?" Jon asked curiously.

A supreme stage battle master could live for 200 years, while an intermediate stage battle master had a maximum lifespan of 150 years. If he dies a natural death, Melody would still have 50 or so years left to live.

"I will live my days missing you. Occasionally, I will check up on your children and grandchildren and the children and grandchildren of our grandchildren," Melody said sincerely, her desires so simple and honest it brought a smile to Jon's face.

The first phase of the Awakening Trial lasted a few hours. Those who didn't possess a unique physique were dismissed and sent away. Those who did were instructed to stay.

Around a thousand people had come to participate. Now, only a hundred or so were left.

Mordgeist stored the massive magical wall back into a place only he knew, then pulled out a mysterious orb from somewhere equally enigmatic.

Everyone was left wondering where he was storing and pulling things out from, even Jon.

Despite noticing their curiosity, Mordgeist offered no explanation.

"Next the talent assesment test will take place. In this test, your mental strength will be determined. Mental strength determines a lot of things. The greater it is, the faster you can realize your potential and become a truly strong person. It's crucial to possess a mental strength stronger than ordinary people to embark on the path of battle masters. To put it plainly, if your mental strength is revealed to be below 5, you will be disqualified from the awakening trial. The orb in my hand is a magic treasure that can reveal one's mental strength upon contact. When your name is called, come forward and place your hand on it," Mordgeist explained before calling Matthias.

After Nathan, he possessed the strongest potential amongst the third generation descendant of their clan.

Matthias placed his hand on the orb and a few stars appeared in it, reflecting his talent.

"Your talent is even better than your decent grade magic physique. With a ten star mental strength, becoming an intermediate stage battle master shouldn't take you more than a decade," Mordgeist patted him on the shoulder. "Then, I will see what can be done about helping you advance to the elite stage."

"Thank you, father," Matthias was slightly surprised as he had never received such praise and support from his father before.

Mordgeist tested Nathan next.

His talent was twice as good as his own.

In ten short years, he would climb up to his level if he practice every day nonstop.

A lot of people were tested before Melody turn came.

Her talent wasn't as impressive as her saintly physique. It was slightly worse than Nathan. But it was still better than the other third generation descendants of the Mountain Clan.

Jon was tested right after her.

"This can't be."

Five times more stars appeared than when Nathan was tested.

There was a gasp all around!

"How can he have better talent than me?" Nathan was angry to see that Jon was better than him at something.

Mordgeist rubbed his eyes, unable to believe what he was seeing.

"Elder, please announce my result," Jon said.

"You have an innate divine mental strength. You probably already know what that means. It's a pity your physique isn't anything impressive. We would have become the most dominant family in this village in less than a year if only your physique was as good as Nathan's," Mordgeist sighed heavily.
