Chapter 16: An Unlikely Ally
The Beacon Hills Preserve was a different world in the dead of night, a realm of shadows, whispers, and unseen things. The air was a heavy, cold blanket, smelling of damp earth and the subtle, lingering scent of pine smoke from the remains of the Hale house. Adam felt the unease in his bones, a low, thrumming anxiety that had nothing to do with the chilly air and everything to do with the figure leaning against the ruined porch of the charred manor. It was Derek Hale, a man who moved like a shadow and carried a century of pain in his eyes.
Adam's breath hitched in his throat. He had a plan, a strategy, a carefully crafted conversation in his mind, but standing before the hulking figure of Derek Hale, all of it felt flimsy and fragile. Derek's presence was a physical thing, a raw, primal power that radiated from him like heat.
"I know what you're doing here," Derek said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very earth. "You and your little friend. Hunting."
Adam's hands clenched into fists at his sides. He had to be careful. One wrong word, one misstep, and this alliance would shatter before it even began. He had to be bold, to offer something Derek couldn't refuse.
"We're not hunting," Adam replied, his voice calm, despite the frantic, internal beat of his heart. "We're… investigating. There's a difference."
Derek scoffed, a dry, humorless sound. He pushed off the porch, his movements fluid and predatory. He moved closer, a physical manifestation of a threat, his eyes, the color of a bruised sky, boring into Adam's. Adam didn't flinch. He couldn't.
"The difference," Derek said, his voice dropping to a low, menacing whisper, "is that hunters kill. And you two, you're trying to… save them." He was circling him, a silent, menacing prowl.
Adam took a deep breath. He had to lay his cards on the table. "The Alpha… it's not just a werewolf. It's… a host. A parasite. Two different entities." He watched Derek's face, a flicker of a reaction. Something in Derek's eyes, a ghost of a memory, confirmed Adam's theory. This was a truth Derek already knew, a painful, long-buried truth.
"And you know this how?" Derek asked, his voice still low, but with a new, dangerous edge of curiosity. "You weren't at the crime scene. You weren't… there. So tell me. How do you know?"

Adam took a step back, not in fear, but to give himself space. He couldn't reveal his System. He couldn't reveal his foreknowledge. He had to make it sound like a brilliant, logical deduction. He had to play the part.
"The claw marks," Adam lied, the words a carefully constructed story. "The pattern. It's not just a killing spree. It's a message. It's too… precise. It's a game, Derek. A twisted, sadistic game."
Derek's gaze didn't waver. He was a lie detector, a human lie detector. He could smell the deception in the air, the subtle, almost imperceptible shift in Adam's body language.
"You're lying," Derek said, his voice a flat, dead thing. "I know you're not a werewolf. I can smell it. There's a… a static charge around you. Like a ghost in the machine." He moved closer, his eyes narrowing. "But whatever you are… you're useful. And you're right. There's something else going on. Something I don't understand."
Adam felt a mix of fear and relief. Derek knew. He knew. And yet, he wasn't attacking him. He wasn't revealing his secret. He was… accepting him. For now. This was the first test, and Adam had passed. Barely.
"So… you'll help?" Adam asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Derek's lips curled into a cold, almost imperceptible smirk. "I'm not a hero. I'm not joining your 'pack.' But I want to know who is doing this. I want to know what's happening. And if you have the answers, then… we have a deal." He turned and walked back to the porch, his back a wall of indifference. "Now get out of here. And next time, don't come to me with a lie. I can smell a liar from a mile away."
Adam stood there for a long moment, the scent of decay and old stone now mingled with the overwhelming scent of Derek's mistrust and his own fear. He had done it. He had secured a powerful, dangerous ally. But he had also exposed himself, made himself a target, and placed his trust in a man who had already proven he was a force of nature. He was a new player in a very old, very dangerous game.
