Chapter 5: The Hunter's Gaze
The air in the school parking lot was thick with the scent of rain and wet asphalt, but beneath it, Adam's mimicked senses picked up a different odor: the sharp, sterile scent of gunpowder and something else, something old and primal and cold. The Argents had arrived. He felt a shiver of unease run down his spine. They were a complication, a whole new level of threat he hadn't accounted for in his initial, reckless plan to save Scott.
"Did you see them?" Stiles's voice was a low, nervous whisper beside him. "The new family. The Argents."
Adam nodded, his eyes scanning the new students as they walked into the school. Allison Argent, the beautiful and oblivious love interest, was a bright spark in the mundane hallway. Her father, Chris Argent, was a looming shadow, a man whose quiet presence was more unnerving than a scream.
"We have to warn Scott," Stiles said, his hands already flailing. "We have to tell him to stay away from her."
"We can't," Adam replied, his voice a low, firm command that surprised even himself. "We can't tell him what they are. He won't believe us, and even if he did, it would just put them all at risk." He had to be a mimic, not just of powers, but of the plot. He had to keep them safe from the truth, even if it meant lying.
"So what do we do?" Stiles hissed.
"We find out what we're up against," Adam said, a plan forming in his mind, a reckless, dangerous, but necessary plan. "We get a read on him."
He saw Chris Argent walk past, his back ramrod straight, his eyes scanning the students with a quiet, practiced intensity that was more terrifying than any open hostility. Adam slipped into the crowd, a silent shadow, and moved to within three meters of the hunter. He felt the familiar, cool hum of his System. He wasn't mimicking a physical power this time. He was trying to glean information, to get a read on the man who was hunting his new friend.

The last message was a chilling, unexpected twist. The System, the cold, unfeeling tool he was relying on, had just given him a new kind of warning. He wasn't just a ghost in the machine. He was visible. Chris Argent wasn't just a hunter of werewolves. He was a hunter of the unusual, of the unique, and he had just registered Adam's presence.
Adam felt a cold dread wash over him. He had been so focused on saving Scott that he hadn't considered the possibility of being the prey himself. He was a new variable, a walking plot hole in a world with very strict rules, and a hunter had just noticed him.
He retreated, slipping back into the crowd, his heart hammering against his ribs. Stiles was waiting for him, his face a mask of confused anxiety.
"What did you do?" he whispered. "What did you find out?"
"I found out that they're not just hunters," Adam said, the words a strained breath. "They're a different kind of threat. They're more organized, more dangerous than we thought".
He didn't mention the part about his System, the part about being seen. He couldn't. It was too much, too soon. He had to carry this new, terrifying secret on his own. He was a mimic, a transmigrator, and he had just become a target.
He was a hero and a villain in his own story, a protector and a walking complication. He was in over his head, and the water was getting deeper.
He had to get Scott and Stiles out of this. He had to change the narrative. He just had no idea how.
