Chapter 14: The Prank to Save the Hunter's Life
The tension in Beacon Hills was so thick you could cut it with a dull butter knife. Peter Hale was unmasked and now a public enemy, a monster in plain sight. But the danger wasn't just coming from the Hale family anymore. It was also coming from the other side. The hunters. Specifically, Kate Argent. She had Scott in her crosshairs, and I knew I had to intervene.
I was sitting in my bedroom, a sprawling, ridiculously luxurious room with a view of the entire town, and I was planning. The prank this time wasn't about annoying a werewolf or unmasking a monster. It was about saving a life. A human life. The human life of my best friend.
Okay, so this is not ideal. This is a very, very big problem. This is a level 10 "oh, crap" moment. Kate Argent is a hunter, a professional killer, and she's not a fan of werewolves. And she's not a fan of me, a guy who is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. But I'm going to save Scott. I'm going to do it with a prank. A beautiful, ridiculous, and absurd prank. It's my brand. And my brand is about to save a life.
The prank was a masterpiece of convoluted logic and a subtle use of my powers. I wasn't going to fight Kate; I was going to outsmart her. I was going to use a series of illusions to create a public spectacle, a false confrontation that would force Kate to back down.
The plan was simple. I had a small, discreet drone I had bought online—a perk of being a rich kid with a tech addiction. I programmed it to fly around the school, playing a series of low-frequency, almost imperceptible sounds. The sounds were a mix of classical music, a high-pitched frequency that only dogs could hear, and a faint, almost ghostly whisper of a voice. The whispers were a mix of nonsense words and cryptic phrases, just enough to be noticeable, but not enough to be understood.
I watched from a distance as Kate Argent, a silent, menacing presence, cornered Scott in a deserted hallway. She was a blur of muscle and rage, her eyes glowing a furious, electric red, a guttural snarl rumbling in her chest. She was a hunter, a professional killer, and she was about to kill my best friend.
"You thought you could get away with it?" she snarled, her voice a low, menacing rumble. "You thought you could be a monster and get away with it? I'm a hunter. I'm a force of nature. And I'm going to kill you."
Scott, a crumpled mass of limbs on the floor, was terrified. He was a monster, but he was also a human. And he was about to die.
I didn't panic. I just smiled, a small, knowing smile. "Showtime," I muttered to myself.
I used my mimicked powers to create a series of illusions, a beautiful, hilarious, and ultimately frustrating wild goose chase. I created a phantom werewolf in the corner of the hallway, a blur of brown fur and glowing yellow eyes. I created a phantom snarl on the wind, a low, guttural growl that no one else could hear. I created a phantom smell of fresh blood, a scent that only a hunter could smell.
Kate, a blur of muscle and rage, lunged at the phantom werewolf, her eyes glowing a furious, electric red, her claws extended, her fangs bared. She was a hunter, a professional killer, but she was also a victim of a very, very stupid prank. She tore through the air, her claws digging into nothing, her fangs baring at a ghost. The entire hallway, filled with students and teachers, was a blur of chaos and confusion.
"What is going on?" a teacher screamed. "What is that thing? What is Kate doing?"
Kate, a hunter in plain sight, was now unmasked. She was a werewolf. She was the Alpha. She had been exposed, and she had been exposed by a prank.
The prank was a success. I had saved a life, and I had done it with a series of illusions and a very, very good lie. Now, I had to figure out how to stop her. Without getting myself killed. It's a classic Adam Smith problem. And a classic Adam Smith solution.
