Chapter 40 - "A Demon's Mercy"

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"How… how is this possible?!"

Donasik's eyes went wide in shock, almost popping out of his head.

It was like his brain just stopped working.

Crack!

The spear of light shattered, brilliant magic flaring at Edgar's fingertips.

The dazzling magic beam tore through the air like it was nothing and slammed right into Donasik.

A terrifying force exploded out, shattering his light-based defenses in an instant.

It was like a high-explosive shell had gone off midair—thunderous, deafening, with shockwaves rippling out for everyone to see.

Standing beside Edgar, Asia's face went pale. Her ears rang, and her brain felt like it had turned to mush.

Boom!

Donasik dropped from the sky like a puppet with its strings cut, slamming into the ground hard.

Blood poured from his mouth, his whole body beaten to a pulp.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Footsteps approached.

Donasik looked up—and met those cold, black eyes.

"Sp… spare… me…"

He struggled to speak, desperately trying to stand. "If you kill me, you'll be in big trouble—"

"Cut the crap."

Edgar's voice was calm. "Do you know how to extract an artifact?"

The street was dead silent.

Only Edgar's voice echoed in the air.

Asia just stared blankly, still not processing what she'd seen.

It was over?

A fallen angel… completely crushed one-sidedly by a demon?

If she hadn't been chased all this time by this very fallen angel, she might've thought he was a fake.

"I… I don't know how."

Donasik caught his breath and quickly added, "But I know Rinali can do it."

Not bad, at least he's being useful.

Edgar raised an eyebrow. "Where is she?"

"I can tell you how to find her—but you have to promise to let me go."

He started bargaining.

"Sure."

Edgar nodded casually.

…That easy?

Donasik hesitated. "How do I know you'll—"

"You're not in a position to bargain."

Edgar cut him off coldly. "Don't talk, just answer. Or die."

That killing intent poured over him like ice water, making Donasik's soul practically jump out of his body.

"I—I'll talk! I have a set time and place to meet up with Rinali and the others, it's at—"

"Got it."

Edgar nodded, vanished in a flash of light—

…And actually left?

Donasik's eyes lit up with relief.

But the next second—

Edgar reappeared right in front of him and stomped down hard.

Crack!

Bone-breaking echoed out.

Donasik's eyes went wide, full of unwillingness and fear.

"Didn't… didn't you say you'd let him go?" Asia asked, shivering.

"I did. I let him go."

Edgar shrugged. "But who told him to run into me again? Guess he was just unlucky."

"…"

Asia stared at Edgar, dumbfounded.

You can… do that?

But… somehow, it actually made a twisted kind of sense.

Seeing the crowd starting to gather, Edgar tidied up the scene and said,

"The barrier's gone. Let's get out of here."

Buzz!

The magic circle lit up.

Edgar and Asia vanished from sight.

Edgar's villa.

In the living room, Edgar pulled two cans of ice-cold cola from the fridge.

"What's this?"

"Cola. Never had it?"

"I grew up in the church… only ever drank water."

Edgar: "…"

What kind of life had this kid been living?

"Here, try it."

He popped one open and handed it to her.

"Thanks."

Asia took a small sip—

Her eyes lit up. "So good! So, so good!"

Then she gulped the whole can down in one go and let out a satisfied burp.

Ahh… perfect.

She suddenly just wanted to curl up and sleep.

So much had happened today—she was completely exhausted.

Half-drifting into sleep, she noticed a smiling face nearby, making her jolt slightly.

Right—she wasn't alone. The demon was still here.

Her toes curled awkwardly in embarrassment. That was way too casual of her.

"You can sleep if you want," Edgar said.

"N-no, I'm fine… thank you."

Asia gave him a complicated look.

This demon… was unexpectedly considerate.

He might actually be… a pretty good person.

"Well, since you're awake, let's talk business."

Edgar's tone turned serious. "Are you ready?"

"…Ready for what?"

"You forgot what you promised me?" Edgar looked at her like she'd grown another head.

Asia blinked, then her face turned bright red again.

Right… she'd promised to become his.

"I… um… can we not rush into it? At least let us spend some time together first."

She just couldn't bring herself to crawl into a demon's bed that fast.

"..."
