Chapter 64 - A Reason TO FIGHT

[NEXT MORNING]

The fluorescent lights flickered to life with their familiar hum.

Maya stepped through the heavy steel door, her bare feet pressing against the polished concrete floor.

The training hall was already alive with the quiet rustle of grey uniforms, the soft shuffle of feet, the muted whispers of children who had learned to speak without being heard.

The air smelled of antiseptic and sweat— the same scent that clung to everything in this place. But today, something felt different.

Her eyes moved across the room, cataloging faces, expressions.

Subject 0002 was near the far wall, her arms crossed, her sharp eyes scanning the room with practiced vigilance. Subject 0004 stood beside her, his posture relaxed but his gaze alert.

Subject 0014 was already in his designated spot, his bald head gleaming under the lights. He caught Maya's eye and gave a small, almost imperceptible nod.

Maya returned the gesture.

Then— she saw Subject 0011.

He was standing near the center of the room, his thin frame barely visible beneath the loose fabric of his uniform. His glasses were gone—lost in the churning darkness of the platform—and without them, his face looked younger, more vulnerable.

But something was different about him today.

His shoulders, which had always been hunched, were straighter. His hands, which had always trembled, were still.

His eyes, which had always darted nervously from face to face, were fixed on the front of the room with quiet focus.

Maya blinked. She had seen Subject 0011 in this room countless times. She had watched him stumble, fall, fail.

She had watched him shrink into himself, making himself as small as possible, hoping to escape notice but this—this was different.

The training session started.

Maya moved through the exercises with mechanical precision. She had learned to anticipate the movements, to adapt to the rhythm.

Her body still ached from the platform, but she pushed through the pain, forcing herself to keep going.

Her eyes kept drifting back to Subject 0011.

He was moving through the exercises with a grace she had never seen in him before. His body, which had always seemed awkward and uncoordinated, was now fluid. Controlled.

The Code Instructor's voice cut through the silence, "COMBAT DRILLS."

The two words echoed across the training hall.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then the children moved, almost mechanically.

Years of repetition had taught them to respond before they had time to think. Shoes— or bare feet, depending on the day's protocol—shifted across the polished floor.

Bodies separated into assigned groups. Lines formed with precise spacing, hands moved behind backs.

The training hall settled into its familiar rhythm.

Usually, Subject 0011 would wait.

He would stand near the back of the line, shoulders slightly hunched, eyes lowered, hoping the instructor would choose someone else first.

He had learned that being noticed was rarely a good thing. Being selected meant pressure.....

Pressure meant mistakes and mistakes meant consequences.

So he had developed a simple strategy.

WAIT.

Let someone else step forward, let someone else be chosen, let someone else draw the instructor's attention.

But today, before anyone else could move—

Subject 0011 stepped forward.

The room seemed to pause.

Several heads turned toward him.

Subject 0014 stared. Subject 0002's eyebrows lifted slightly. Even Subject 0004's expression shifted, his eyes narrowing with quiet interest.

His eyes narrowed with quiet interest.

For a moment, no one said anything.

0011 stood there for a moment, apparently unaware of how unusual his decision had been.

Then he noticed. One face, then another.

Then almost the entire group. He swallowed.

His fingers tightened briefly at his sides.

But he didn't step back.

Subject 0014 leaned slightly toward 0002.

"Did he just... volunteer?"

Subject 0002 didn't take her eyes off 0011.

"Apparently."

"That's new."

"Very."

Subject 0004 remained silent.

His gaze moved from 0011 to Maya. Maya was already watching him. Their eyes met for a brief moment.

At the front of the room, the instructor looked at Subject 0011, " Subject 0011. "

0011 straightened, "Yes, Instructor."

"First."

A faint murmur moved through the group.

Subject 0011 nodded, "Understood."

He walked forward, his first step was careful.

The second was steadier.

By the third, the trembling in his hands had almost disappeared. He reached the center

of the training floor and stopped.

The other children stood along the perimeter.

Watching, judging.

The instructor walked toward him, "Defensive stance."

0011 immediately adjusted his position.

His feet shifted, his weight redistributed.

His hands rose.

"OPPONENT."

Subject 0005 was the first to move. He stepped out of the line. 0011's eyes widened slightly.

The instructor looked between them.

"BEGIN. "

0011 nodded. 0005 approached.

They stopped several feet apart.

The hall became completely silent.

Subject 0014 leaned forward slightly.

"He's fighting 0005?"

0002 nodded, "Looks like it."

"That's not exactly an easy first choice."

"No."

"Should someone tell him?"

0002's eyes remained on the center of the floor.

"He already knows."

0011's hands were still slightly tense.

His opponent was taller, broader— the kind of opponent that would have made him freeze just days ago.

But today, he didn't freeze. He moved.

His body twisted, his weight shifting with a precision that seemed almost unnatural. His foot swept out, catching his opponent's ankle. The other boy stumbled, his balance breaking.

Subject 0011 was on him in an instant. His hands found the pressure points, his body moving with a cold efficiency that made Maya's breath catch.

The other boy hit the ground.

Subject 0011 stood over him, his chest heaving, his eyes fixed on his fallen opponent. His expression was unreadable.

The Code Instructor's voice cut through the silence. "Subject 0011. That was... acceptable."

Subject 0011 stepped back, his breathing steadying. He didn't look at the Instructor. He simply walked back to his place in the formation, his posture straight, his eyes forward.

Maya stared at him.

She had seen him fall. She had seen him fail. She had seen him at his lowest, drenched, trembling, broken on the cold concrete floor after falling into the churning water.

And now, she was seeing him rise.

The training session continued.

Subject 0011 completed every exercise ..... Not perfectly. Not with the cold, mechanical precision of Subject 0004 or the sharp efficiency of Subject 0002.

But he completed them without trembling. Without the familiar shadow of doubt that had always haunted his movements.

Subject 0011 remained in the center of the room, his chest still heaving slightly, his eyes fixed on the floor.

His movements were still awkward, still uncertain—but there was a fire in him that hadn't been there yesterday.

Maya's eyes narrowed. She watched him carefully, her mind racing with questions.

What changed?

The session ended. The attendants moved through the room, their mechanical footsteps echoing against the concrete.

Maya waited.

She moved through the crowd with quiet precision, her small frame slipping between

the other children like a shadow.

She reached Subject 0011 just as he was about to leave. She tugged at the sleeve of his uniform, a small, almost imperceptible gesture.

Subject 0011 turned. His eyes widened slightly when he saw her.

Maya's voice was barely above a whisper, her dark eyes fixed on his face. She glanced around quickly, ensuring no one was close enough to hear.

"What happened today?"

Subject 0011 blinked. "What do you mean?"

"You were different today, Your performance, it was better than I've ever seen from you. The drills, the combat. You didn't hesitate once."

Subject 0011 was silent for a moment. His eyes dropped to the floor, his fingers fidgeting with the sleeve of his uniform.

Then, slowly, a smile spread across his face.

"I've decided, This time, I'm going to pass Code Red. I'm going to get out of this place."

Maya stared at him. Her dark eyes widened— just slightly, a flicker of surprise that she quickly suppressed. "You're certain?"

"I'm certain."

She studied him for a long moment, her eyes moving across his face, searching for any sign of doubt. She found none.

Then, slowly, she raised her hand. Her small fingers curled into a fist and she extended her thumb upward, a silent gesture of approval, of support.

Subject 0011 blinked. For a moment, he seemed unsure of what she was doing. Then, understanding dawned on his face.

He let out a soft laugh, his eyes glistening. "You just gave me a thumbs up."

Maya's lips twitched. "Yes."

"From a four-year-old."

"Yes."

"That's... that's actually encouraging."

Maya lowered her hand, her expression returning to its usual neutral calm. "You're going to make it this time."

"You sound so sure."

"I am."

Subject 0011 stared at her. His mouth opened, then closed. He seemed to be searching for the right words, unable to find them.

"How can you be so sure?"

Maya met his gaze. "Because you want it. Not because you're afraid of failing. That's different."

Subject 0011 was silent for a moment. Then, slowly, he nodded.

"Look at them," Subject 0011 said, nodding toward the far side of the room. "Look at Subject 0002, Subject 0004, and Subject 0014."

Maya turned her head, her eyes following his gaze.

Subject 0002 was standing near the far wall, her arms crossed, her sharp eyes fixed on the door.

But there was something different about her posture— a looseness in her shoulders that hadn't been there before.

Subject 0004 was leaning against the wall, his face still a mask of stone. But his eyes were not scanning the room with the same cold intensity.

They were focused on the small group gathered near the center— on Maya and Subject 0011.

Subject 0014 was pacing near the corner, his bald head gleaming under the lights. He wasn't hiding, wasn't shrinking into the shadows.

He was walking with a purpose, his broad shoulders squared.

Maya watched them for a moment, "What about them?"

Subject 0011's smile widened. "Look at them, Maya. Don't they seem more energetic to you?"

Maya tilted her head, her dark eyes moving from one figure to the next. She studied their postures, their movements, the subtle shifts in their expressions.

"They do," she said slowly. "Today, everyone seems more... energetic. More purposeful."

Subject 0011 nodded. "That's because of your spark."

Maya blinked. "What?"

"Yesterday," Subject 0011 continued, his voice quiet but certain.

"You made us feel like we weren't alone. For the first time in years, we felt like we had something to fight for."

Maya stared at him, her dark eyes unreadable.

Then, slowly, she spoke. Her voice was soft, barely audible.

"I just... I didn't want anyone to be alone. I know what it feels like."

Subject 0011 smiled— a real smile, one that reached his eyes.

"That's exactly why you're different. That's why we're all trying harder today. Because someone finally made us believe it was worth it."

Maya turned her gaze toward the room.

The training hall stretched before her, her eyes were not scanning the empty space—they were fixed on the figures scattered across it.

Subject 0002 and Subject 0004 stood near the far wall. Side by side.

Their postures were relaxed— arms crossed, shoulders loose. But there was nothing relaxed about their eyes. Both were fixed on Maya and Subject 0011 with an intensity that bordered on predatory.

They were watching, listening. Filing away every word, every gesture, every shift in expression.

Subject 0002's head was tilted slightly, her sharp eyes narrowed in quiet calculation. She had heard everything— Maya could see it in the way she held herself, the slight tension in her jaw.

Subject 0004 was more still. His face was a mask of stone, unreadable. But his eyes—those cold, assessing eyes— were locked on Maya. He did not blink.

A short distance away, Subject 0014 sat on the cold concrete floor. His back was pressed against the wall, his broad shoulders hunched forward. His bald head gleamed under the lights, but his face was half-hidden in shadow.

He was trying very hard to look uninterested. Like someone who had simply chosen to sit there and happened to be facing their direction.

But Maya noticed the way his head was tilted—just slightly, just enough to catch their voices. The way his hands had gone still on his knees.

The way his breathing had slowed, as though he was straining to hear every word.He was listening too.

Maya's gaze moved across the three of them—Subject 0002 and Subject 0004 standing like sentinels, Subject 0014 sitting like a man trying to appear invisible.

They were all listening. And they were all pretending they weren't.

She turned back to Subject 0011. Her expression remained unchanged, but something flickered in her eyes— a quiet acknowledgment of what she had just observed.

"They're listening," she said, her voice flat and matter-of-fact.

Subject 0011 blinked. He followed her gaze, his eyes moving across the room.

He spotted Subject 0002 and Subject 0004 first, their unblinking stares, their rigid postures. Then he spotted Subject 0014, sitting hunched against the wall, pretending to study his own hands.

Subject 0011's breath caught. His shoulders tensed, his hands curling at his sides.

"How long have they been there?" he whispered, his voice barely audible.

"Long enough."

Subject 0011 swallowed hard. His eyes darted nervously between the watchers. "Should we stop?"

"No. Let them listen, let them hear."

Subject 0011 stared at her. "Why?"

Maya turned to look at him, her dark eyes steady. "Because they're curious. "

Subject 0011 opened his mouth, then closed it. He looked at the watchers again—Subject 0002's sharp gaze, Subject 0004's stone-cold stare, Subject 0014's hunched, listening posture.

"Or they're waiting for us to slip up."

The training hall was empty now.

"Let's see how long each of us can survive."

The words hung in the air like smoke— thin, fragile, impossible to grasp.

Subject 0011 blinked. His mouth opened slightly, then closed. He looked at her as though trying to decide whether she was serious.

Then Subject 0004's voice cut through the silence— low like stones grinding together.

"Bet."

He stepped forward as he spoke.

One step. Then another.

His cold eyes fixed on Maya, his expression unreadable. But there was something in his posture— a slight tilt of his head. Interest.

He had been watching her since the moment she arrived. He had seen her fall. He had seen her rise and now, he wanted to see how far she could go.

Subject 0002 moved next. She uncrossed her arms and walked forward until she stood beside Subject 0004.

"Let's see who reaches Code Red first then," she said. Her voice carried the edge of someone who had been waiting for a reason to fight.

Subject 0014 let out a low chuckle. He stepped forward, his broad frame casting a shadow across the concrete floor.

A grin tugged at the corner of his mouth—Challenging."Let's see who's got the most stamina."

Subject 0011 remained still. His hands were at his sides, fingers curled slightly. His eyes moved from one face to the next. "Alright, Let's see."

Maya watched him for a moment. Her dark eyes moved across his face, searching for something. When she found it, she allowed herself a small nod.

Then she extended her hand, palm open, fingers spread.

Subject 0004 was the first to respond. He placed his hand over hers— quick, firm . His calloused palm pressed against her small, fragile fingers.

For a moment, the contrast was jarring— his rough, battle-scarred skin against her pale, unmarked flesh.

Subject 0002 followed. Her palm pressed against theirs, calloused and steady. Her sharp eyes met Maya's for a brief moment and something passed between them, a flicker of understanding.

Subject 0014's hand came next, covering the others. His broad palm engulfed their smaller ones but his touch was gentle, almost careful.

Subject 0011's hand trembled slightly as it touched theirs— then stilled.

His fingers pressed against the others with a quiet determination that surprised even him.

They stood there for a moment, five hands stacked together in the corner of the empty training hall.

Maya's voice cut through the silence, soft but clear.

"Whoever reaches Code Red first—the rest of us follow."

She pulled her hand back. The others followed. One by one, they lowered their hands to their sides, their eyes still fixed on each other.

Subject 0004's eyes met hers. "See you at the finish line."

Subject 0002's lips curved into a faint smirk. "Try to keep up."

She tilted her head, a challenge gleaming in her sharp eyes.

Subject 0014 cracked his knuckles. "Try not to break before I do."

His grin widened, but there was no cruelty in it—only a rough, stubborn determination.

Subject 0011 said nothing. But there was a new steadiness in his posture, a quiet resolve that hadn't been there before . His eyes were fixed

on the future.

He was going to make it this time. They all were.

They turned and walked away— five separate figures moving in different directions.

Their footsteps echoing softly against the cold concrete floor. The air was still heavy with the weight of what had just passed between them—the promise.

Subject 0014 lingered for a moment, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the polished floor. He turned back, his bald head gleaming under the fluorescent lights.

A faint grin tugged at the corner of his mouth,

"Hey ..... hey. " he called out, his voice rough, carrying a hint of challenge.

"Try not to die before you reach Code Red, yeah?"

Subject 0002 stopped walking. Her shoulders tensed, just slightly, her sharp eyes fixed on the door ahead of her. For a moment, she seemed

to be processing his words, weighing them, deciding how to respond.

Then, slowly, she turned her head. A faint, almost imperceptible smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "We'll see."

Subject 0011 let out a low chuckle. "That's not a no."

Subject 0002's smile widened—just barely, just enough to be noticed. "It's not a yes either."

"Close enough."

Subject 0014 shook his head. He turned to walk away, his broad shoulders relaxed, his steps unhurried.

But before he could take more than a few steps, Subject 0002's voice cut through the silence.

"Subject 0004."

He stopped, turned. One eyebrow raised in question.

Subject 0002 met his gaze, "Don't die before you reach Code Red."

Subject 0004 blinked. For a moment, he seemed genuinely surprised. Then, slowly, a grin spread across his face.

"Was that concern I just heard?" he asked, his voice dripping with mock disbelief.

"It was an observation."

"Uh-huh."

"Don't read into it."

"Too late. I'm already reading."

Subject 0002's eye twitched. She turned away, her sharp voice carrying over her shoulder. "I hate you."

Subject 0004 didn't respond but he didn't deny it either.

Subject 0011 watched the exchange from a few feet away, his thin frame leaning against the cold concrete wall.

"They're like an old married couple."

Subject 0014, who had been standing nearby with his arms crossed, let out a low grunt. "Worse, They're like siblings."

"Worse. Much worse."

Subject 0004 was the first to move.He didn't look back. His steps were measured, deliberate.

He walked toward the heavy steel door at the far end of the hall. His footsteps echoed against the concrete, each one a sharp tap that seemed to punctuate the silence.

The door slid open with a low mechanical hum.

He paused at the threshold— just for a moment, just long enough for the light to catch the scars on his face. Then he stepped through.

The door slid shut behind him with a soft, final click.

Subject 0002 followed. She reached the door. It slid open. She stepped through.

Click.

0014's steps were heavier than the others, each one carrying the weight of years of struggle.

He reached the door, paused at the threshold, and turned his head— just slightly tocatch Maya's eye.

A faint grin tugged at the corner of his mouth.

"Try not to die before I do, yeah?"

Maya's lips twitched. "You first."

Subject 0014 let out a low chuckle. He stepped through the door.

Subject 0011 stood there for a long moment. He turned to look at Maya. For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, slowly, a smile spread across his face— a real smile, "I'll see you at the finish line."

"You will."

Subject 0011 nodded once. Then he turned and walked toward the door.
