Chapter 56 - The Broken Moon Oath

The moonlight was fractured, filtered through the clouds like shattered glass, bleeding silver across the battlefield. The air smelled of charred flesh and iron-rich blood, thick enough to choke even the strongest warrior. The ground trembled faintly, not from footsteps or blades, but from something older—something that stirred beneath the roots of the earth.

Selene stood in the center of the ruined clearing, her sword heavy in her hand, her chest heaving as though every breath was borrowed from a dying god. Her enemies lay scattered around her, their eyes wide in terror even in death. But victory brought no peace—only the sharp, gnawing dread of what was coming.

Behind her, Kael staggered to his knees, blood dripping down his jaw, his usually unreadable face cracked open by pain. His arm hung at an unnatural angle, but his eyes still burned with unyielding rage.

"You swore it would end tonight," he spat, his voice like gravel. "That the chains binding us to the gods would break."

Selene turned slowly, her gaze locking with his. "I did," she said, though the tremor in her voice betrayed her. "But oaths forged under the Blood Moon are never truly ours to command."

A silence spread between them, heavy and dangerous. The others—the remnants of their pack, their allies, even the rivals who had been forced into this fragile coalition—watched with a mixture of awe and fear. None dared speak, for they all felt the same thing: the gods had heard her words.

And the gods were answering.

The ground split with a thunderous crack, a jagged line tearing through the clearing. From it rose a pillar of molten light, blinding and pure, carrying with it the sound of chains dragging across the heavens. Selene's body stiffened, her eyes glowing against her will. Her blood, thick and black with lunar corruption, seared her veins as it tried to reshape her.

Kael pushed himself forward, clutching her wrist before she collapsed. "Fight it, Selene," he growled, though his own voice trembled. "Fight them."

Her lips parted, but the words that spilled from her mouth were not hers. The voice was ancient, resonant, echoing across worlds.

"The Moon Oath was broken. The debt must be repaid in blood."

The allies fell to their knees. Some wept. Others bowed their heads in resignation. But not Kael. He rose shakily to his feet, dragging Selene with him, defiance burning hotter than his wounds.

"You think you can take her?" he roared at the sky. "You think she's just a vessel for your chains? No. She's mine—our Alpha, our blade, our salvation. You'll have to kill us all before you claim her."

The chains above the clouds shimmered, endless and glowing, like rivers of fire weaving through the night. From their lengths dropped shards of moonstone, each one striking the earth and birthing twisted beasts of divine punishment. Their screeches filled the clearing, their bodies neither mortal nor celestial, an abomination designed only for destruction.

Selene's voice broke through the godly possession for a single heartbeat. "Kael…" she whispered. "If I lose to them—if they take me—end it. Promise me."

His jaw clenched, his eyes wet with fury and desperation. "Don't you dare ask me that."

But the words had already been spoken, and words spoken under fractured moonlight had power.

The first of the beasts lunged, a serpent of bone and ash. Kael caught it with his bare hands, ignoring the way its fangs tore into his flesh, and slammed it into the earth. The others charged, their howls shaking the trees.

The battle that followed was not a clash of warriors, but a war between gods and defiance. Steel screamed. Blood poured. Magic tore open the night. And through it all, Selene stood at the center, her body a battleground between her own will and the divine chains tightening around her soul.

Her scream split the night, half mortal, half god, and the moon itself flickered—waning, breaking, as if the heavens feared her defiance.

The Broken Moon Oath had begun its true price.
