MHGA Chapter 240 – Calamity

"We've spotted a bunch of guys on motorcycles."

Inside a Militech AV, the pilot was relaying the update over Militech's secured comms channel:

"Probably just some Wasteland scavvers… Ha! Look at these clowns, carrying melee weapons like it's the Dark Ages. Total junk-rats."

"HQ gave the order—terminate all unrelated personnel."

Inside a ground APC, one of the pilot's teammates responded.

"Let's give these Wasteland hicks a taste of real tech."

"Roger that."

In the AV cockpit, the pilot grinned and began prepping the vehicle's mounted weapons to blast those "primitives" on motorcycles into scrap.

But as the AV locked onto the riders and zoomed in on the camera feed, the pilot spotted one of them—a black-haired young man, clearly Asian—aiming a black, gaping barrel straight at him.

The pilot couldn't help but chuckle.

At this range, not even Night City's top-tier sniper rifles could do squat to a Militech AV. Did this bumpkin think he was lugging around an anti-air cannon or something?

Just as the pilot was preparing to launch a guided missile at the oncoming "scavvers," the black-haired youth on screen pulled the trigger on his Heavy Bowgun.

The pilot barely had time to smirk before something streaked across the camera feed—

—And then a massive explosion rocked the sky.

The entire Militech squad immediately went on high alert.

"Enemy attack!"

The squad leader's expression shifted. "Where did it come from?!"

"Arasaka? Kang-Tao? Someone else—?"

The answer came quickly from one of the scouts.

"It's… the motorcycle gang!!"

Meanwhile, back with the Hunters, Naofumi Iwatani calmly ejected the spent casing from his Heavy Bowgun and began reloading a new round.

"Tanjiro! You take Rakuro, Shirou, David—follow Kirin!"

Kairo Retsu, seeing the AV explode and realizing that a full-scale battle was about to break out, quickly organized the less combat-savvy members and the newcomers to split off.

"Naofumi! Joseph! Laios! Let's hijack some rides!!"

Kairo's grin turned wild. "Let's show these Night City hicks what superpowers and magic really mean!"

"YAHOO!"

Joseph was completely in the zone—at this point, he was just one Mohawk away from full-on post-apocalyptic raider.

Naofumi kept his focus, ready to execute the plan. But Laios…

"Uh… do we really have to hijack?"

Laios looked troubled. "I wanna chase Kirin instead…"

"If we grab an AV, you can get a bird's-eye view of Kirin!"

"Let's go then!!!"

Laios didn't hesitate another second and gunned it straight toward the corp units.

"Man really stays true to his impulses…"

Kairo muttered as he spun his bike around.

"Guildmaster! Leave Kirin to us!"

Tanjiro called out confidently. "We'll give it our all!"

"Tanjiro really is the dependable type… LET'S GOOOO! I'm gonna pilot a floating tank!"

Kairo whooped as he charged straight for the Militech squads.

Meanwhile, Kirin had reached the outskirts of Night City.

Some residents in the city's outer zones were starting to notice something was off.

Kirin's mere presence disrupted local electronics with immense surges of electricity. The cyberware implanted in people's bodies began to glitch, and their cyber-eyes started flickering with interference.

But these subtle disturbances weren't yet enough for the residents to grasp the danger they were in.

That changed when massive sirens blared from above.

From their rooftops, they saw something most would never witness in a lifetime: Riot response units and private military forces descending in AVs above their heads.

And then, blaring evacuation orders rang through the sky.

Before anyone could figure out what was happening, they were being forcefully dispersed.

From those AVs, heavy weaponry was now being aimed straight at the ground.

And at that moment…

Kirin burst into the city limits.

With a thunderous cry, the slightly emaciated but still muscular beast—driven mad by hunger—leapt onto the roof of a small building. It seemed to be sniffing the air, trying to locate the scent of food.

It scraped the rooftop with agitated hooves. Its crimson eyes burned with fury.

It had been starving for a long time—maybe not enough to collapse, but enough to make it irrationally aggressive.

And this city… stank.

The air reeked of chemicals and rot, nothing like its natural territory. It hated it.

As Kirin scouted for a food source, the AVs hovering overhead locked on and opened fire.

The missiles mounted on the AVs didn't give a damn that the building might be someone's home—

—they rained destruction down on Kirin without hesitation.

At first, Kirin didn't care about the strange flying metal things above its head.

Until one of the missiles exploded just in front of it.

The blast obliterated the rooftop beneath its hooves.

As flames roared upward, the Riot Units scanned for a target—but Kirin leapt from the debris, fur bristling, sparks dancing wildly across its body.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING?!"

One of the AV pilots cursed, watching in horror as Kirin emerged from a missile strike without a scratch.

That missile would've totaled an APC—and yet it barely singed what looked like some kind of mythical horse.

And then, the pilot felt something—

—the sliver of his face that was still human skin suddenly burned.

His instincts screamed at him—something was wrong.

He tried to pull the AV away.

But Kirin had no intention of letting the metal thing that attacked it escape.

With a shriek, Kirin raised its front hooves and released a bolt of electricity into the air.

The particles in the atmosphere surged—

—and a massive lightning strike blasted down from the sky, slamming directly into the AV.

The vehicle was reduced to scrap in a flash.

Kirin's red eyes locked onto the sky again.

It had found its new prey.

More of those metal flying things.

And Kirin was not done yet.
