The car screeched to a stop in front of the house, my arms were numb from holding Lucas against me, his weight far heavier than his body should be. Matteo lifted him swiftly, carrying him inside without a word. His face was dark as thunder, his eyes bloodshot with rage and sorrow.
But at the gate, Ezra stood waiting, he leaned against the pillar, arms crossed, face calm as if he had been expecting us. His lips curved slightly, not into a full smile, but into something that unsettled me even more than open malice.
"Finally," he said, his tone almost amused. "You found Lucas sorry..." his eyes flicked toward Matteo's back, toward Lucas's limp body, "...he looked injured."
I froze, my steps halting and a strange chill ran down my spine because how did he know we were looking for Lucas? Nobody told him.
