The faint warmth of her breath fanned over his skin, carrying the sweet scent of her. His eyes, usually so sharp and mischievous, softened as he gazed at her.
"Lirael…" he murmured, his voice low but steady, carrying a husky weight that made her chest tighten. "You know I joke a lot, I tease you all the time… but I need you to hear this clearly. I love you." His thumb brushed tenderly against her flushed cheek, leaving a trail of heat in its wake. "I'll take care of you, no matter what comes. I'll never let you go back to that life again.
