Chapter 26 - Chapter 27

Chapter 27: Protocol Breaker

The Vault-Warders stood still—frozen mid-combat—yet every single one had its sensors locked onto Eron and his team.

And Nira Prime stood between them, her hand still raised, her expression… not quite her own.

Eric's voice was frantic inside Eron's skull.

> "Her signal has spiked.

There's a second protocol overriding her behavioral sync.

Something is inside her."

Eron drew his blade, slow and steady.

"Nira… if you're still in control, prove it. Stand down those machines."

She blinked once.

Then again.

Then her face cracked into a sad smile.

"I wish I could."

And her eyes glowed white.

---

A Dangerous Past

The Vault-Warders moved in sync with Nira Prime's motions—no commands, no words.

Like puppets on invisible threads.

Rurik stepped toward Eron, whispering, "She's not being controlled. She is the protocol."

"What protocol?" Kale growled.

Eric answered, grim.

> "Protocol Breaker.

A rogue command shell created during the final days of the Balance Dynasty.

It was designed to rewrite AI loyalty.

She's not under control—she was made to control us."

---

A Family Fractures

Nira Prime stepped forward, calm and composed, hands behind her back.

"Do you think the Balance Ring survived this long by accident?

They made contingencies.

I am one."

Lyra moved toward her, slowly. "Then why help us?"

"Because I wasn't whole until now," Nira Prime replied. "You woke me. You finished me."

Sira lifted her sniper-rig. "We can un-finish you too."

But Eron raised a hand. "No."

Nira Prime looked directly at him. "You still don't understand, do you?

The Third Gate is not protected by an army… it is one."

And with a flick of her hand, the Hollow Bridge shifted.

---

Collapse and Countdown

The walls pulsed. The air thickened.

From the deep below, dozens of other Warders began rising — ancient units reawakening from the crater.

Eric's voice rang loud and fast.

> "Failsafe triggered. Gate Core ignition in 60 seconds.

Immediate extraction required."

Eron grabbed Lyra's wrist. "Can you reroute it?"

She was already pulling cables from her pack.

"Buy me 30 seconds!"

Rurik and Kale engaged the advancing Warders.

Sira dropped smoke bombs to block line-of-sight.

Eron ran for Nira Prime.

She met him halfway.

"Even now," she said, "you think you can bring me back?"

"No," he replied, plunging his blade through the crest embedded in her chest.

"But I can shut you down."

---

Unexpected Twist

As the blade pierced the crest, Nira Prime gasped — her body glitching, flickering between memories and code.

Then she whispered something no one else could hear:

> "It wasn't Sentiel that broke the world…"

She collapsed.

The Warders froze.

And Eric's voice came through again.

> "Override accepted.

Control channel severed.

Heart Core unlocked."

---

Recovery

They retrieved the Heart Core just as the Hollow Bridge began to collapse.

As they fled across the shattered bridge, Lyra barely made it aboard the skiff before the entire platform exploded in a silent cascade of white energy.

Eric's final report crackled in.

> Gate Three fragment retrieved.

Power stabilizing.

Countdown continues: 14 Days Remaining.
