Chapter 75 - Episode 73 – The Symbol on the Demon’s Armor

Fallen Heaven: Rise of Faizi Tian

Episode 73 – The Symbol on the Demon's Armor

Recap

After returning from the northern ridge, Faizi Tian learned that demon soldiers were secretly using an abandoned watch station. One soldier had entered carrying a black case and left without it, suggesting that something had been delivered inside the building.

Faizi ordered his scouts to record the symbol on the soldier's shoulder so it could be compared with the broken sealing fragment recovered from the ancient ruins. He refused to assume that the two discoveries were connected without evidence.

Meanwhile, Faizi continued strengthening his cultivation at Flame Vein Realm – Early Stage. His energy control and swordsmanship were improving, but he knew that he still needed a stronger foundation before attempting another breakthrough.

The demons were moving in silence, and Faizi was determined to discover what they were hiding.

Episode 73 – The Symbol on the Demon's Armor

Morning light spread across Blackstone Pass as Faizi Tian entered the command hall.

A sheet of thin parchment lay on the central table. Beside it rested the broken metal fragment recovered from the underground chamber in the northern ruins.

The scout who had observed the demon soldier stood nearby, waiting for permission to speak.

Faizi examined the drawing first.

The symbol consisted of a dark circle surrounding a curved shape. One end of the curve extended toward the centre, while the other ended near the outer ring. The design was simple enough to remember, but the scout had not seen it clearly for long.

Faizi turned toward the scholars.

"Compare the drawing with the fragment. Tell me what matches and what does not."

Master Qiao adjusted his spectacles and leaned over the table. Elder Shen stood beside him, while the formation expert Lin Zhen carefully examined the metal fragment under a small crystal lamp.

For several minutes, the room remained quiet.

Then Lin Zhen spoke.

"The outer circle resembles the border on this fragment, but the inner design is different."

Faizi looked at the two symbols.

"How different?"

"The fragment has a claw-like pattern at its centre. The scout's drawing shows a curved line. They might share a common style, but the drawing is too incomplete to establish that they belong to the same formation."

Master Qiao nodded.

"Ancient sealing systems often used circles and curved lines. Similar shapes can appear in unrelated traditions. We must not identify a seal by its outline alone."

Faizi studied the parchment again.

"So we cannot say that the soldier's armour carried the same mark."

"Not yet," Elder Shen replied. "But we can say that the drawing is worth comparing with any future evidence."

Faizi nodded.

He had hoped for a clearer connection, but the answer was honest.

He would rather have an uncertain truth than a convenient lie.

"Make a copy of the drawing," he ordered. "Keep the original with the scout's report. If another soldier is seen wearing the same symbol, we may be able to establish a pattern."

The officer standing near the entrance bowed.

"It will be done."

Faizi turned toward the map of the northern ravines.

The abandoned ruins and the watch station might be part of one operation, but the evidence was still incomplete. The demons could be using several locations for different purposes. The only way to discover the truth was to observe their movements and collect information carefully.

"Has the watch station been observed since yesterday?" he asked.

"Yes," the officer replied. "No large group has entered or left. Two scouts saw movement near the western slope, but they could not confirm whether it came from demons or ordinary beasts."

"Continue observing. Do not send anyone inside yet."

The officer bowed and left.

Faizi remained beside the table, thinking.

Varkos had called him the chosen human after their clash. The Demon Lord had recognised something, but Faizi still did not know what it was. The ancient seal, the containers, and the hidden chamber might eventually provide an answer, but he would not force those discoveries into a single explanation.

He had another duty to fulfil before returning to the investigation.

His cultivation could not remain neglected while he chased every clue.

Faizi left the command hall and headed toward the training courtyard.

The morning was cool, and a thin mist still covered the ground. Several alliance cultivators were practising their techniques, their weapons cutting through the air with sharp whistles.

Faizi chose an empty section near the eastern wall.

He drew the Heaven-Breaking Sword and began with slow, controlled movements.

His goal was not to create the strongest possible attack. He wanted to understand exactly how much energy each movement required and how much power he lost when changing direction.

He performed a simple cut, returned the blade to its starting position, and repeated the movement.

After several attempts, he noticed that his energy was dispersing slightly at the end of each strike.

The loss was small.

Against an ordinary opponent, it might not matter.

Against a Demon Lord, even a small inefficiency could become dangerous.

Faizi adjusted his grip and repeated the movement.

This time, he guided the energy more carefully along the sword's edge. The golden light remained narrow for a moment longer before fading.

He lowered the blade.

"Better," he murmured. "Still not enough."

He continued training.

The next exercise focused on movement. He stepped forward, shifted his weight, and changed direction without allowing his energy to surge uncontrollably. Each movement was measured, and each strike returned to a balanced stance.

The exercise was tiring in a different way from a battle. There was no enemy to react to, no sudden danger to awaken his instincts. He had to rely on patience and discipline.

After a while, sweat gathered along his forehead.

He stopped and rested the sword against his shoulder.

His cultivation remained at Flame Vein Realm – Early Stage. The energy flowing through his veins had become more stable, but he could feel that his foundation still needed strengthening before he could safely seek the Middle Stage.

A breakthrough achieved through impatience could leave hidden weaknesses.

Faizi had no intention of allowing that to happen.

He sat cross-legged and began Infernal Flame Breathing.

With each breath, he drew energy inward and guided it through his meridians. He paid close attention to the rhythm of his breathing, allowing his energy to move without forcing it toward a higher stage.

For a short while, the process remained smooth.

Then a faint pressure developed near his chest.

Faizi immediately slowed his breathing.

The pressure was not severe, but it reminded him of the strain he had suffered during the battle against Varkos. He allowed the energy to settle before continuing.

He did not attempt to draw upon the full power of the Demon Seal.

That power had helped him during the battle, but it was not a substitute for the strength he needed to develop himself.

He wanted to be able to fight effectively even when he could not afford to release a devastating technique.

After several more cycles of breathing, his energy moved more smoothly.

Faizi opened his eyes.

No breakthrough had occurred, and he had not expected one. The session had served its purpose: he had identified a weakness, worked to improve it, and avoided pushing his body beyond its current limits.

He rose and resumed sword practice.

This time, he focused on the Heaven-Breaking Sword Art's Second Form.

He remembered the moment his attack had collided with Varkos's demonic claw. The technique had broken through the attack and wounded the Demon Lord, but the power required had left Faizi dangerously exhausted.

He repeated the opening movement of the form without releasing its full destructive force.

The sword's golden light gathered along the blade.

For an instant, the light became concentrated and sharp.

Then it dispersed.

Faizi frowned slightly.

The Second Form was powerful, but controlling its energy at different levels remained difficult. He could unleash the technique under extreme pressure, yet he needed greater precision if he wanted to use it repeatedly without exhausting himself.

He sheathed the sword.

"Power without control is a debt that must eventually be paid."

A voice came from behind him.

"That sounds like something an old master would say."

Faizi turned.

One of the alliance's younger cultivators stood near the courtyard entrance, carrying a bundle of practice weapons. He had evidently overheard the last sentence.

Faizi gave him a calm look.

"Then perhaps you should listen before you make the same mistake."

The young cultivator immediately straightened.

"Yes, my lord."

Faizi's expression softened slightly.

"Do not call me lord every time you speak. We are in a training courtyard, not a royal audience."

The young man relaxed.

"Then may I ask something?"

"Ask."

"During the battle at Blackstone Pass, everyone said you injured Demon Lord Varkos with one sword strike. If your attack was that powerful, why are you practising such simple movements?"

Faizi glanced at the sword at his side.

"Because one powerful strike does not guarantee victory."

The young cultivator looked confused.

Faizi continued.

"If I can release one devastating attack but lose the ability to defend myself afterward, then I have created an opening for my enemy. A stronger opponent will not necessarily give me time to recover."

He pointed toward the practice targets.

"Strength is not only the power behind an attack. It is also the ability to remain effective after the attack has ended."

The young cultivator considered those words before bowing.

"I understand. I will remember that."

"Do not merely remember it. Practise until you understand it."

The young man returned to his duties.

Faizi watched him leave, then turned back toward the courtyard.

For the first time since the battle, he felt that he was approaching his weakness from the right direction. He could not control every enemy he would face, but he could control how carefully he prepared himself.

By midday, the alliance officer returned with another report.

"My lord, the scouts have observed the watch station again. A small group approached from the western slope, but they did not enter through the main doorway."

Faizi wiped the sweat from his forehead.

"Where did they go?"

"The scouts believe they disappeared behind the ridge. They could not follow without risking discovery."

Faizi accepted the report.

"Good. They were right not to follow blindly."

The officer hesitated.

"Do you think there is another entrance?"

"There may be. We need to examine the terrain before deciding."

Faizi walked toward the command hall, where the map had been laid out again. He asked the officer to mark the western slope and the path taken by the observed group.

The new route ran behind the watch station, toward a narrow break in the rocky ridge.

It might lead to a hidden entrance.

It might simply be a natural passage used by travelling beasts.

Faizi studied the map carefully.

"Tomorrow, send two scouts to observe this area from the opposite ridge. They should look for repeated movements, not approach the passage."

The officer nodded.

"And if they see another group?"

"They record its direction and return. We will act when we understand the pattern."

Faizi dismissed the officer and returned to the table.

The symbol on the soldier's shoulder had not matched the fragment closely enough to prove a connection. The watch station had another possible approach, but its purpose remained unknown.

The investigation was moving slowly.

Yet slow progress was still progress.

A careless attack could alert the demons and destroy the only opportunity to learn what they were doing.

Faizi would not make that mistake.

As the afternoon passed, he reviewed the scholars' notes. The ancient tablet described something related to containment or transfer, but its missing sections prevented a complete interpretation. The broken fragment might have belonged to a sealing mechanism, but its original purpose remained uncertain.

He placed the notes beside the map.

Three separate questions now guided his investigation.

What had the demons transported through the northern ravines?

Why were they using the abandoned watch station?

And what had Varkos recognised when he called Faizi the chosen human?

The questions might eventually lead to the same answer.

For now, they remained separate.

Far beyond the Southern Continent, Afiya Xue stood in a quiet courtyard surrounded by pillars of translucent ice.

She had spent the morning studying ancient records concerning rare spiritual reactions. None had provided a clear explanation for the response in her Celestial Ice Phoenix Bloodline when the image of Faizi Tian appeared before her.

She closed the final scroll and looked toward the pale sky.

The world was vast, and many mysteries remained hidden even from the oldest cultivation clans.

Afiya had no reason to travel toward the Southern Continent yet, and no reason to believe that the distant young man had any connection to her own future.

For now, she returned to her training.

Their paths remained separate.

At Blackstone Pass, Faizi stood alone on the outer wall as evening approached.

The wind carried the distant sounds of the camp. Soldiers were repairing the damaged defences, healers were tending to the wounded, and scouts were preparing for another night of observation.

Faizi looked toward the northern mountains.

He had not gained a new cultivation stage that day. He had not discovered the meaning of the strange symbol, and he had not uncovered the demons' secret objective.

But his sword control had improved, his energy flow had become steadier, and his investigation had gained a more organised direction.

Those gains mattered.

A cultivator's journey was not measured only by the moments when a new realm opened before him. It was also measured by the weaknesses he overcame before reaching that moment.

Faizi rested his hand on the Heaven-Breaking Sword.

"Varkos, I still do not know why you chose those words."

His eyes narrowed toward the distant darkness.

"But I will find the truth. And when we meet again, I will be stronger—not because I rushed toward power, but because I prepared myself to bear it."

He turned away from the wall and returned to his quarters.

The next day, the scouts would observe the western ridge again.

And Faizi would continue both journeys: one toward the truth hidden by the demon army, and the other toward the strength he would need when that truth finally stood before him.
