==============

It was June.

The season when hydrangeas, in full bloom, are soaked by the rain and deepen their colors, had arrived.

That sounds nice to say, but in short, it was the rainy season. There were many rainy and damp days, and it was the kind of season that made you feel down with every hint of summer approaching.

Today, as always, it was raining outside. The university hallway was more humid than usual, and even footsteps seemed to carry moisture.

"So, I'm earlier today, huh?"

"Yes, unusually so."

Iroha, walking beside me, responded indifferently as I spoke, still looking straight ahead.

Today, I didn't have a part-time job and was leaving after my fourth period, while Iroha seemed to be taking almost a full course load. It was an unusual pattern, where I, who usually came home late due to my part-time job, was scheduled to leave early.

"So, could I ask you to do the shopping? I'll give you the household wallet."

"Alright."

The household wallet was primarily for covering food expenses, and we used it to pool money so we wouldn't have to split the bill every time we went shopping. Doing something like this made me feel like I had a family, but it was probably inevitable given that we were living together.

"I'll send you a list of what I want you to buy on Line."

"Mmm. Got it."

"Hey, Hikigaya!"

Just as I took the wallet and put it in my bag, a familiar voice called from behind me.

I turned around to see the overly enthusiastic guy, Nikaido, approaching with a grin. While I was thinking, "He didn't see that, did he?", Nikaido came up beside me.

"Something's rare, seeing you two outside the cafeteria. Oh, and Isshiki-chan, long time no see!"

"Ah, it's been a while. Please don't call me 'chan' so casually."

"Woah. She's smiling, but what she's saying is savage."

And Iroha, as usual, was cold towards any man other than me.

But Nikaido... At least she's smiling. This girl, she won't even force a smile for pick-up artists; she'll glare at them with the intensity to shoot them dead...

"By the way, didn't you just hand her a wallet? What's the situation?"

Even so, this guy totally saw that just now. And he's not holding back with his questions either.

The wallet we used for household expenses was Iroha's old one. Even from a distance, it would have been obvious it was a woman's wallet.

"...It's nothing, just running errands."

When I answered that, Iroha gave me a sidelong glance. No, it's not a complete lie, so this is fine, right...?

"You're totally whipped, huh? Well, I guess that's just right for you, Hikigaya."

Nikaido chuckled knowingly. ...But, of course, I hadn't told him we were living together.

It wasn't like we were hiding it, but there was no need to go out of our way to say it. It'd be troublesome if it got out by chance.

"Oh, right. Let's go grab a meal sometime soon, for old times' sake. ...Ah, just us guys, of course."

He must have noticed Iroha's terrifying smile as he was speaking, so Nikaido added that towards her. Iroha, try to keep your feelings off your face a little more, okay?

"...He says. Can I go?"

"Hmph... Well, I go out to eat with Sakura-chan too, so I guess it's fine..."

Hmm, she sounds super displeased...

Lately, I feel like Iroha's possessiveness has been growing stronger. It might be the same for me too, though.

"Alright then, I'll contact you later."

Waving casually, Nikaido turned the corner towards the stairs and left.

I had a slight start when he saw the wallet, but he probably wasn't suspicious. Thinking "good grief," I looked at Iroha, and her scrutinizing eyes looked back at me.

"...No, what? Is there something on my face?"

"Yes, a rotten eye and a hopeless mouth."

"Hold on? Stop doing Yukinoshita's impression all of a sudden, okay? No, it's really good though..."

The coldness of her voice was exactly like Yukinoshita in high school, it gave Hachiman chills... But I felt like I'd been somehow brushed off.

"Oh, right. It's fine if you go out to eat, but can we set a curfew? Eight PM for Senpai only."

"That's too early... I'll have to leave the first party midway..."

I continued to grumble in my heart, "And only for me, too," but if she really wanted me home early, I had no choice but to obey.

This must be what they call being hopelessly in love. I smiled as Iroha grabbed my sleeve as if to warn me not to go overboard.

—------

Before I knew it, it was past ten at night.

As usual, I had finished the housework and my bath, and I was in the middle of my relaxation time. Senpai had spread out documents on the low table and was in the midst of writing a report.

It had already been a little over a month since I started living with Senpai. The happy, embarrassing,Heart pounding days became familiar to both of us within a week, and spending time freely without talking like this had become a usual sight.

"Senpai?"

"Mmm."

The only response was a noncommittal hum, and he didn't turn to look at me, sitting on the sofa. This was his reaction when he was concentrating or didn't have the oom to bother with me.

"No, I just called out."

"Oh, really..."

He gave me a quick glance, as if to say, "Then why did you call...?", then hunched over his report again.

Having nothing to do, I opened the fashion magazine I had been reading. As I flipped through the pages, thinking that the new issue should be out soon, a certain keyword caught my eye.

June Bride.

According to the article, the first Sunday in June is the day when diamonds sparkle most beautifully under the sunlight, so it's said that being proposed to on this day brings happiness.

Other reasons included that marriage was permitted from June in old Europe, or something about a Roman goddess. I had vaguely wondered why people would choose to have weddings during such a rainy season, but it seemed there were various reasons. If I told Senpai, he'd probably go on and on about even more obscure, trivial folklore. I won't bring it up because it'd be too much trouble.

But, marriage, huh?

Living together like this, I've come to realize that I can probably manage cohabitation well with someone I like. Senpai has also gotten quite used to it, so I'm sure of it. In fact, if he wasn't, I'd be in trouble.

"Senpai~"

I got off the sofa and hugged Senpai from behind as he sat on a cushion, facing his report. His body didn't even twitch. Has this person gotten too used to my physical affection?

"No, what...? Is there something you need?"

Senpai looked back with just his head, a slightly exasperated expression on his face. But I knew his cheeks were softening a little.

"No, nothing. I just wanted to cuddle."

Looking over his shoulder at the report, I saw unfamiliar keywords lined up. The thought of having to learn equally difficult words and terms within another year or so made me feel a little down.

And so, a year, two years passed. And even more time.

What kind of shape would we be in then? Perhaps because I had read the June Bride article, such a thought suddenly crossed my mind.

"Pay more attention to me~"

"Ah, yeah, yeah... So you just wanted attention, huh?"

My hair, dangling into his vision, must have been a nuisance, as he ruffled my head vigorously. He was more rough than usual in his affection. But I loved that he couldn't completely ignore me anymore.

"If you're going to pat me, do it properly~"

"No, I can't finish this report..."

As if to say, "Put up with this for now," he then ran his fingers through my hair with surprising naturalness and kissed me. A light kiss, but one that clearly conveyed his feelings.

"Senpai."

"Hm?"

A few years from now. Or even further, a June Bride.

When that time came, would Senpai choose to be with me?

How would I feel, being with Senpai at that time?

"I love you."

But for now, this kind of relationship was comfortable and just right.

I retaliated by sealing his lips and then jumped into Senpai's chest.
