Chapter 8: The Situation of Rosemarie Post [III]

Johan was absolutely terrified. His back pressed against the damp alley wall, his breath jagged and heavy. His eyes were wide, pupils trembling, sweat dripping off his chin like rain. Even the air pressure around him seemed to shift.

The little girl smiled faintly, her head tilted, watching Johan with a look that didn't belong on a child's face.

"So… you can see her," she said in a low, eerie tone.

Johan's fists clenched, veins pulsing across his temple. His body screamed to fight, to run, to do something. His voice cracked out of him like broken glass:

"What the fuck… is that thing?"

The girl didn't flinch. Instead, she looked him dead in the eyes, her tone calm—almost protective.

"Don't call her a thing. She is Lying Eyes."

Johan's breath caught in his throat. His mind raced.

"…Mutant… abomination?" he muttered, still frozen in place.

The creature squealed suddenly—

"Pquick-squick!"

A high, piercing frequency that made Johan's teeth grind. He stumbled back again, his chest tightening. And then—

He saw it.

On its stomach.

A half-stitched human mouth.

Twitching. Trying to speak.

Johan's legs gave way. He dropped onto the dirt, eyes locked on the writhing horror.

The girl didn't move to comfort him. She simply stood, lifted her gaze to the dark sky, and then turned her head back with a smile far too serene for the nightmare crawling behind her.

"Don't be afraid," she whispered. "She is my friend."

Johan forced his body to move. Crawling, dragging himself toward his bag like a wounded animal. He fumbled for his water bottle, uncapped it with shaking hands, and drank—trying to wash away the sight, the sound, the mouth.

Moments passed in silence.

He sat there, alone with his spiraling thoughts, piecing together what he had seen. Slowly, his breath steadied. His eyes regained focus. His jaw tightened.

Johan stood.

And this time, he faced the girl.

He walked right up to her, still trembling but forcing himself to tower over her small frame.

His voice came low, almost growling.

"What the hell… was that?"

The girl's response was immediate, unbothered.

"She's not an it," she said. "She's a she. Her name is Lying Eyes. And she is my friend."

Johan frowned hard, teeth grinding.

"…It's a Stand. But what the fuck can it do?"

The girl hesitated, then asked softly:

"You won't hurt me… right?"

Johan narrowed his eyes, his voice sharp.

"Why would I harm a little girl for no reason?"

For the first time, the girl straightened her back. She spoke with a strange confidence that felt far older than her small body.

"Then allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rosaria Buckmann. I am the Third Daughter of Mayor Lillyton Buckmann… and this—"

Her voice dropped, and the critter peeled itself fully onto her back, twitching, watching Johan with its eight unblinking eyes.

"…is my friend. Lying Eyes."

The grotesque Stand shifted, its crablike legs clicking against the ground, stitched mouth writhing silently. Johan's body screamed at him to run. And yet, his eyes stayed fixed—determined but edged with fear.

Rosaria's tone hardened, her small hand pointing straight at Johan.

"She can see anybody's name, age, and sex under her vision. She can also see two miles in every direction, nothing hidden, no shadow too deep."

Johan's face twitched. His gut tightened.

"And at last," Rosaria said, her eyes boring into his, "she knows who else has power. The ones like you."

Johan's heart dropped.

"As you said yourself…"

The child's finger didn't waver, her voice echoing louder than her body should allow.

"…a Stand user."

Johan's eyes widened in shock.

He was looking at a fragile, five-year-old girl—

And yet, in this cursed alley, beneath the broken sky, she had just stripped his secret bare.

A child who knew him.

A child who could see through him.

And Johan realized…

He wasn't the only one here.
