3rd Person POV
It hadn't been a simple strong punch. He used [Turbo] on the movement, but carefully enough not to shatter the windows of the entire block with the displaced air. He didn't want to destroy anyone's house.
Damien was caught by surprise. He almost took it full in the face, but managed to dodge thanks to strength, agility and combat instincts refined over eras, with reflexes built from living longer than entire civilizations.
(A/N: Seriously, the guy is very old, from billions to millions of years.)
'Hum. Maybe I exaggerated.' Damien thought. 'Humans, fragile. On the inside.' He didn't understand human nuances very well. As a demon he had some feelings for his clan, but empathy was still a distant concept for him.
It wasn't exactly his fault. He had known humans for a relatively short time, only about three hundred thousand years. And it had only been a few decades since he truly lived among humanity.
'But strong.' He thought, evaluating the opponent. 'Humans and their strange powers.'
In his era there had been many powerful beings, but in the sixth era, the era of humanity, exceptional humans had also appeared, both in technology and in power.
He still remembered when the demons discovered that extraterrestrial life existed. That was when they understood the true strength of humanity, the imagination to think of the impossible, capable of generating innovative technologies that led to the discovery of other planets and, eventually, to the first contact with alien species.
After all, the underworld had always focused on combat, so their technology never reached the same scope as humanity's.
"I'm not going to take a lecture from a demon. Not because of racism, but because of… wait! It is literally because of that! Don't come giving me moral lessons! Redder!" Max vaguely remembered an episode from the animation where Mark went to the underworld, and Damien's race was more a type of demon than "the Devil" in the biblical sense.
Since this world shared the same space as the Image Comics universe, real gods and demons existed there. Spawn had been tricked by a genuine demon in his own origin, and Kid Thor's family had forged, centuries ago, a spare hammer for Thor himself to use while the original Mjölnir was lost.
When Thor finally found his true hammer again, he returned the replica to the blacksmith family, imbuing it with a bit of his own divine power, with the unique condition that only someone of that blacksmith bloodline could wield it.
"Child. Warning. Do not fight. Strong powers. But little experience." Damien entered a combat stance. He hadn't planned a fight, but since things had gotten this far, he decided to teach the boy a small lesson.
"That was pretty arrogant of you. I'm going to teach you, grandpa, that you don't drop that kind of defeat flag before a fight." Max knew it would be a difficult combat. Damien wasn't lying about his experience, but Max had something better to cover that disadvantage.
'[Laplace].'
Before Max's eyes, a series of calculations unfolded, attack angles, movement patterns, possible defenses and counterattacks Damien might use, all simulated in a fraction of a second.
'The good thing about this ability is that it's not just a simple vision of the future. It also works for data analysis. Combined with Nano, my scientific life is going to get really good from now on.' Max had already read Damien like an open book, but he knew that even with this advantage, the demon's experience would probably make him realize something was wrong, some kind of prediction being used against him.
That way, Damien would probably adapt, acting as if he already knew that Max knew what he was going to do, or at least that was what Max expected based on the fiction stories he had consumed in his previous life.
After that preparation, Max's body filled with a blue light again, using the same power to sharpen his senses as well. In that state, time seemed to slow down a little, which wouldn't give much advantage on its own, since Damien was also fast enough to compensate for speed with pure experience.
Max advanced first, aiming a strong, fast punch at the exact point where he knew Damien would try to dodge. As expected, the demon leaned to the side at the last instant, preparing his own counterattack.
Only Max had already predicted that too.
In the middle of the movement, he activated [Inertia], redirecting the punch in the air without losing any of the original force or speed, an impossible curve that no normal human could execute. The fist abruptly changed trajectory and hit Damien square in the chin before he could recalculate the dodge.
The impact launched him backward, cutting through the air until a more distant vacant lot, far enough from the neighborhood houses so they could continue without causing more collateral damage.
Damien got back up, wiping the corner of his mouth with the sleeve of his trench coat, staring in the direction Max had thrown him, with a mix of genuine surprise and something dangerously close to respect.
"Interesting." That was all he said before launching himself back toward Max.
Max, in turn, had already arrived at the new location as a blue beam cutting through the air, just in time to see the demon materialize his armor mid-flight, a pointed helmet with horns forming over his face in a fraction of a second, along with the rest of the armor forming on his body.
'I have to admit I wanted that technology. If I beat him up really well, will he give me a piece to study? Does the law of the strongest also apply in the underworld?' Max really wanted to understand that, to get his hands on some of that techno-magic from this world. Unfortunately, Invincible as a whole had always focused much more on technology than on magic.
Everything he knew about Image magic was little, vague fragments. He knew that was a dark path to explore, and he didn't know if it would charge too high a price for any power shortcut.
Damien landed right in front of Max, without saying anything more this time, and attacked first.
Max activated [Turbo] with even more intensity, since they were now in a vacant lot with no risk of destroying anyone's house with the force of the combat. Damien's first punch almost landed clean. Max dodged by a hair and connected another blow, aiming for the demon's solar plexus.
Only this time Damien managed to dodge at the last instant, surprising Max, who had calculated with [Laplace] that the blow would at least graze him.
'He's adapting fast.' Max recognized, a mix of irritation and admiration passing through his mind.
On the other side, Damien was also reevaluating the opponent. Centuries of combat had taught him to recognize when he was being read, and that boy's pattern was far too clear, far too predictable, the kind of prediction that only came from someone literally seeing a few seconds ahead.
'He knows what I will do.' Damien thought, red eyes narrowing. 'Then I will do different.'
On the next blow, instead of maintaining the logical sequence he had been using so far, Damien completely broke his own rhythm, a deliberately erratic movement with no pattern to be read, almost as if discarding decades of formal training in exchange for pure calculated chaos.
Max felt [Laplace]'s calculation fail for the first time, the prediction arriving cold, correct about the past, useless about the present. Damien's punch grazed his shoulder, an impact strong enough to make him stagger a step back.
'…Ah, damn.' Max recognized the pain throbbing in his arm, a strangely welcome sensation. 'He broke his own pattern on purpose. Smart, old man.'
They went back to exchanging blows, a more even rhythm now. Damien alternating between predictable movements and erratic explosions, forcing Max to rely less and less only on prediction and more on his own reflexes. A second punch from Damien got past Max's guard and hit the side of his face, a dry crack that made his vision shake for an instant.
'Alright, he really wasn't playing around.' Max spat a bit of blood on the ground, a crooked smile forming despite the pain. 'Well, my turn to stop playing too.'
That was when he decided to escalate things for real.
Max made Nano activate inside his own body, the microscopic machines circulating through his bloodstream, altering his own biochemistry in seconds, forcing an instant state of intoxication on himself.
'To use [Sloshed], I need to be drunk first. And thanks to the semi-useful power [Have perfect balance], I don't even feel the more annoying side effects, I just get the benefit.' Max smiled, feeling his own Quirk activate as soon as the intoxication took over his system.
An invisible wave of instability spread around him. The effect of [Sloshed] disturbing the balance of anyone nearby, making them feel instantly dizzy and drunk. While Max remained perfectly stable thanks to his power, Damien wasn't so lucky.
His body reacted immediately, staggering a step to the side, his legs suddenly seeming to belong to someone else. The red eyes went glassy, the reflexes half a second delayed, the calculations that had previously come so precise now arriving slightly cloudy, like a drunk trying to remember his own name in the middle of a bar fight.
"Hn?" That was all Damien managed to articulate, stumbling lightly, trying to understand why his own legs seemed to have decided to go on their own.
Max didn't waste time. He advanced, his hand closing and going toward Damien at the exact moment he lost his balance.
"ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA!" Max shouted, activating [Strongarm] and [Vitality Stealing] at the same time. His shoulders and arms moved at an absurd speed, a sequence of punches so fast they looked like a continuous blur, each impact on Damien's body draining a little more of his vitality through the touch, feeding Max's own strength with every connected blow.
The demon, already without balance and still trying to process through the induced intoxication, didn't even get close to raising his guard in time.
Damien was thrown backward, skidding across the ground of the vacant lot until he stopped, covered in dust, with a small trickle of dark blood running from the corner of his mouth.
Max stood still for a moment, breathing deeply, his shoulder still throbbing, his face sore where the second punch had hit, and the taste of blood still in his mouth.
He could have used [Permeation] to never have been hit, or [Overhaul] to drop Damien in seconds. But then, what would be the fun? If he got used to solving everything with a single blow, he would never truly evolve. The Gacha was a huge shortcut, and he would definitely use it without mercy when he needed to, but he didn't want to become a slave to it, limiting himself only to what was already within the scope of what the system offered. He preferred to use his own intelligence to figure out ways to work around his own limitations, even when an easier path was available.
Of course that wouldn't apply if a Viltrumite appeared in front of him. In that case it would be pure survival, and he would use absolutely everything he had at his disposal. Even against Battle Beast he would need to push himself to the maximum.
Max looked at the ground, where Damien was unconscious, seeming to have had a small alcoholic coma.
'So demons can get drunk. Noted.' He thought. 'Now, what do I do with him? Should I exorcise him, or would it be better to take him to a priest?'
He couldn't just leave the demon lying there, even if he had stuck his finger right into the wrong wound and twisted it to hurt more. Damien was more clueless than properly evil.
'Wait a second… what if I…' Suddenly an idea appeared in Max's head. 'Hehe~ I'm a genius, there's no way around it.'
.....
'Head hurts. What happened? Where… am I?' It had been centuries since Damien last fainted, and this had been the first time he experienced true intoxication, since a demonic body was normally immune to that kind of effect.
'Mind. Invaded? Never felt this before.' It was a completely new experience. He could only think for now, his vision still blurry, his body too dizzy to move properly.
"Rise and shine, Mr. Damien, rise and shine." Damien managed to hear a familiar voice calling him. It was the voice of the young man who had defeated him.
He had to admit he had underestimated the boy. He hadn't gotten into many fights in the few decades he had spent on the surface, but in all of them he had dominated the confrontation from beginning to end.
Losing to someone who didn't even come close to having a fraction of his lifespan hurt his pride as a warrior, but he didn't hold a grudge over it. Anyone could be defeated one day, and if he lost, he lost, even if it had been through tricks, that didn't change the fact itself.
No opponent usually gave him an advantage in a real fight, except those with the personality of maniacs who only thought about combat.
Finally Damien started recovering his senses. He tried to move his body, but discovered he was pinned in place, which wouldn't have been a problem at all if he didn't feel so weak.
'Strange. I shouldn't feel this.' His species had vitality to spare for him to already be this exhausted.
"Hey, hey, did the cat get your tongue? Here on Earth we usually answer when someone talks to you. Didn't you learn the basics?" Max said, in a tone of someone who was genuinely disappointed.
Damien was already tired of that human child's irreverence, but he still felt entitled to ask something.
"I feel weakness. Did you do something to me?" He didn't believe that state of exhaustion was only the result of having been beaten.
"What do you mean? That I removed some parts of your body to analyze how they would regenerate? Or that I stole several liters of your blood to study how demonic magic applies to reality?" Max said, in an offended tone.
"I totally didn't take your nano-armor, which I discovered works by mixing technology with magic, and that maybe some people who work for me will appear using something similar in the future. Those are all unfounded accusations that you have no way of proving! No one told you to fall asleep first!" Max spoke with such resolute seriousness that Damien was impressed by such shamelessness.
'Human. Completely crazy.' How did the others of his kind let him walk around free? There were some lunatics like that in hell too, but they either ended up dead, scrutinized by the other demons, or spent their lives isolated in some hidden corner. And here was one walking freely among the population.
"You are insane. How does no one notice that?" The demon felt indignant. People normally ran from him, but they seemed to have no problem living with that lunatic.
"A small lesson for you. You can't lock someone up just because the person is strange. I know, I know, you should be able to. In my dictatorship I would do that, and on top of that bring back the brazen bull, the drawing and quartering, and the crucifixions."
When he heard that, a small sideways smile formed at the corner of Damien's mouth.
'Seven billion. Of course I had to run into a powerful lunatic.' Damien had been seeking redemption for a long time, and wondered if this wasn't another one of those moments when his convictions would be tested.
"One more question. Human… er, Max. Why grass? Stars? Why pinned? On a cross?" Damien wasn't angry, or truly furious, just deeply confused. That boy was far too unpredictable.
"Actually, I had thought about taking you to a church and holding a mass with a crucified demon, but then I realized there's no service at dawn. So, since you were already pinned to the cross anyway, I decided to do a few experiments… ahem, ahem! I mean, I decided that the two of us were going to watch the starry sky and the sunrise together. Look over there! It's already happening!" Max pointed at the horizon, where the sun was beginning to rise.
Really, Damien had always found the sunrise very beautiful, and admired that beauty whenever he had time. He would have admired it even more if he weren't beaten up, poked by experiments and crucified. And if he were far away from the one who had done all of that to him.
"Sigh. Forgive me for what I said. I forgot. Humans, fragile. Emotionally."
"Yes, yes, the good old 'I'm sorry if what I said offended you,' but I accept your apology. Defeating a demon should increase my chances of going to heaven, so in the end, you did me a favor." Max spoke with mockery in his voice. Damien realized that wasn't the real reason he had accepted the apology, but preferred not to comment.
"Will you get rid of me now?" The question came out short, direct, without any real tone of fear, just cold curiosity.
"Nah, it would be kind of poetic to do that at sunrise, but from what I know, you're not evil, you just irritated me a lot. Crucifying you is already enough."
With that, the two of them stayed in silence, continuing to watch the sun. After a few moments, Damien spoke again.
"Book. In the coat. Inner pocket, left side. Should help your research. Consider it… an apology."
Max immediately got excited and went looking for the book in the indicated pocket. It looked like a notebook full of research that Damien himself had been doing. It wouldn't be a real loss for the demon, his species also had privileged memory. He would simply start another notebook with what he hadn't finished in the previous one.
"Thanks, man. Sorry for calling you redder, it was in the heat of the moment. This will give me a direction and keep me from accidentally summoning Baal or something similar… is it possible to summon a succubus with this?"
Damien looked at Max a bit sideways.
'Young. Crazy. But still young.' He didn't expect that Max, as insane as he seemed, would be interested in that kind of thing as well.
"There are a few. Careful. Experts at stealing the contractor's vitality." Damien gave the advice, serious.
"Don't worry, I don't need them, but I wanted to see one in person someday. That can wait until I have more knowledge."
Max wasn't some desperate pervert. He just wanted to know if that was possible, and he had far better things to do than lose this life's virginity to a succubus.
'I have a magical path to follow now… even if it's demonic, better than nothing.' Max turned to Damien, and a red beam of energy connected to the demon, who looked visibly surprised.
Soon, Damien noticed his own strength recovering faster than normal, and managed to free himself from the cross on his own, standing up.
"Hn. Looks like magic. Thank you, anyway. I'm leaving now."
"Where to? You're still tired after sleeping so much. Laziness is a serious sin, you know? I thought you were after redemption for your soul or something like that." Max spoke in a tone that mixed mockery and genuine curiosity, like someone who really wanted a serious answer hidden behind the provocation.
Damien just looked at Max and said.
"What tires me. Is dealing with you." He continued toward the forest, entering it without looking back.
"Wait!" Max shouted after him, but Damien didn't listen, he didn't even want to know what nonsense he would say next.
"You're going the wrong way! The city is to the right!"
After heard that, Damien became slightly embarrassed that Max had figured out he was lost, but he didn't change direction. He wasn't going to give him that satisfaction. He would just use his own magic to teleport once he was far enough away.
Max stayed watching Damien get farther and farther into the forest, until he disappeared from view among the trees.
'I hope I don't see him again anytime soon. I think I traumatized the guy. At least he forgot to investigate the lobotomized homeless people more thoroughly.' With the problems resolved, Max decided to leave and take care of a few daily things.

Nolan POV
"*Whoosh*"
"Sorry I'm late. Honest to god, a dragon was attacking Hong Kong. I stopped it."
"Ooh, a dragon. Nice. Marie was getting ready to tell us how interesting her day was."
I sat at the table, still with the taste of dragon smoke in my throat, with no idea that the next few seconds would change everything I had planned for the next few years.
"Guess who's finally getting her powers?"
My daughter said, too excited to hide her own enthusiasm.
'She… is it really… is she really a true Viltrumite?'
That caught me by surprise. Honestly, I had already started accepting that humans weren't compatible enough. I was already considering declaring this mission a failure. She was already 17, with only a few months left until she turned 18.
There were cases of Viltrumites awakening powers after 18, but they were rare enough that I had already started planning around that, living with Debbie and Marie until they died, and only then returning to Viltrum, fulfilling my role there once my life here had completely ended.
But this changed everything. Human-Viltrumite hybrids could inherit a Viltrumite's powers. It still wasn't known if fully or not. I would need to find that out urgently now.
"Are you sure?"
I asked again, just to confirm I hadn't misheard, or that my daughter wasn't playing some prank, which didn't even seem possible given her character. She would never joke about something like that. It had been her dream since she was a child.
"Pretty sure. Threw a trash bag into space at work."
'So… I'm going to have to act. I'll have to do this for Viltrum.'
My head was already miles away, calculating the next steps, how to weaken the planet's defenses without raising suspicion, how much time I still had before the Guardians noticed any change in behavior, when the right moment to act would be. I got so absorbed in my own plans that I didn't even notice the rest of the table waiting for some reaction from me.
Suddenly, I felt a kick from Debbie on my shin, pulling me out of my own head and bringing me back to reality.
"Oh, that's great, Sweetheart, just great! If you're up for it, I'll make some time tomorrow for training." The slip almost escaped before I managed to correct it, years of habit nearly betraying me right in front of her.
"This is so exciting!"
"Bright and early tomorrow, Marie. Make sure you get a good night's sleep."
My daughter answered, recovering all the excitement from before.
"Ha! For sure!"
.....
I couldn't sleep that night, still thinking about what to do and how to do it. Actually, I already knew what needed to be done, but something was holding me back.
'But how… how am I going to tell this to Marie and Debbie? How am I going to explain what Viltrumites are really like, and that Earth is going to become part of the Viltrum Empire?'
That was what really locked me up, more than any strategic calculation. How would they react to the truth when the time finally came?
'I thought this moment would never arrive.'
I spent years allowing myself to believe that, or at least pretending to believe it enough to be able to sleep at night. Every birthday of Marie's that passed without any sign of power was another day I stole for this life, another day of messy breakfasts, silly arguments about homework, good nights said without any hurry. I knew, deep down, that it wasn't permanent. But it was easy to pretend it was.
'She has no idea what she's about to inherit.' The weight of being a Viltrumite. Our species doesn't tolerate weakness, or hesitation, or this kind of… attachment that I let grow here.
I'm going to have to train her, prepare her for what's coming, without her suspecting the real reason behind every lesson.
'Debbie…' She… She always notices things. I need to hide it properly. I just hope I have enough time before that, enough time to decide what to do when the moment arrives.
'Tomorrow I start her training. She's going to think we're celebrating.' A small bitter irony crossed my mind before I managed to push it away. 'And, in a way, we are. Just not for the reason she imagines.'
.....
3rd Person POV
The days went by. While Marie learned to control her powers with her father, Max didn't stay still.
Between conversations with Marie and Wendy and the good deeds he did at night, he was building the new hero suit.
He didn't want armor as bulky as the previous one. He had made it that way because he didn't have enough confidence to invade the Shie Hassaikai without that extra protection. Now he would be able to do the same job, or better, without needing so much weight on him.
It also couldn't be completely black like the previous clothes. Even though he liked the color, it would be kind of unimaginative to repeat the same palette again, so he turned to the things he liked in the costumes of powerful characters from the hero universes he knew.
'The easiest part to decide will be the helmet. I already know exactly what I want.'
Max looked at the prototype in front of him. It was silver-colored, completely closed, with an internal screen equipped with scanners, radio communication, real-time environmental analysis, and a direct connection to Nano, integrating his artificial intelligence into the helmet itself. That way, he wouldn't need to create a completely new AI from scratch, just reuse the one he already had, adapted to the new format.
The design was clearly inspired by Set's helmet, someone Max suspected he would have to face at some point in the future. He wanted to test himself against one of the "gods" of the Invincible universe, even knowing that, from what he remembered, Set himself had never been defeated by brute force in the comics, but through a strategic move that deactivated his powers.
He decided that all the rigid parts of the new hero suit would be silver, while the reinforced and flexible fabric would be red. He liked how the two colors talked to each other, the silver bringing the feeling of technological precision and calculated coldness, and the red breaking that with a touch of aggression and presence, like blood against metal, a contrast that drew attention without seeming exaggerated.
Since he was building a real superhero costume, he decided to follow Edna Mode's classic advice, 'no capes'.
Only he really wanted a cape. The reasons not to have one were obvious, it could get caught on something in the middle of a fight, become an easy weak point for an opponent to pull or hold, get in the way in tight spaces, and still generate unnecessary resistance during high-speed flights. The reasons to have one basically boiled down to one, capes were stylish, and he wasn't going to give that up so easily.
That was when Max realized something.
'Why don't I just use [Shadow Mimic] to create a shadow cape!?' That solved all the problems at once. No risk of getting caught on anything, since if that happened, he would just need to reshape the cape itself to free himself instantly. And as a bonus, he would still be able to naturally hide it in front of his body to disguise movements or sudden attacks, a cape that also served as a tactical smoke screen.
With the solution found, all that was left was to assemble the rest of the suit, which he already had practically ready in his head. That took a few more days, since even though it wasn't super technological overall, he still wanted a microfusion cell in the chest as an emergency power source.
He had imagined it would be pretty difficult to create one from scratch that would fit in his own chest, but as soon as he started studying how the nuclear fusion of the microfusion cells worked, the information simply flowed through his head like water, every engineering principle falling into place too quickly to be a coincidence.
He soon understood the reason, he had assimilated Frank Horrigan at some point. Even being a violent supermutant, the guy had Intelligence 10 and sat at the top of the Enclave ranking. He had probably studied dozens of advanced technology blueprints throughout his life, knowledge that stayed recorded there, waiting to be used. Never having applied that knowledge didn't mean stupidity, just that Frank preferred killing people to spending the day locked in a laboratory doing research.
'I still don't know how this compares to an arc reactor, but I doubt it's that much worse.'
After finishing the rest of the suit, all that was left was to fit the new fusion cell into the chest. He gave it the shape of a red hexagon, with a small sphere of energy in an even redder tone pulsing in the center. As soon as he placed the piece, the suit was complete.
Excited with the result, Max put the suit on right away and looked at himself in the laboratory mirror.
The reflection showed an imposing figure, a smooth, featureless silver helmet reflecting the weak laboratory light like polished metal, with two small rounded pieces on the sides near where the ears would be. A black band outlined the neck, joining the helmet to the rest of the suit. Silver plates covered the shoulders, forearms, hands, knees and part of the shins, interspersed with a dark red fabric that took over the torso, abdomen and thighs, adjusting perfectly to every curve and movement, without any visible rigidity. In the center of the chest, inside a silver outline in the shape of a crest, a red hexagonal core pulsed softly, like a second mechanical heart. And when he turned sideways, a dense shadow rose behind him, undulating slowly like living smoke trapped in the form of a cape, completing the set.
'Man, I'm really proud of myself. All this work was worth it.'
The silver metallic part of the suit had been made with an alloy combining complete Gatelinium, Australium and Nth Metal, the latter two without the original energy, since [Create] could only replicate the molecular structure of the materials, not the intrinsic energy the originals carried. The red fabric came from Fallout's Ballistic Weave, interwoven with extremely thin threads of the same metal alloy, a layer of ballistic fiber reinforced with metal on a microscopic scale, light enough not to lock movement, but resistant enough to withstand more than any ordinary fabric would.
A new week had already started when Max finished the suit, and he still hadn't seen any sign of a new heroine called Invincible out there.
'She's still training with her father. I think he'll only do what he needs to do with the Guardians of the Globe when he finishes her training.'
He knew turbulence was coming in the near future, and honestly, he wanted that. He wanted more excitement in life, something that didn't just come from spinning his own Gacha.
'By the way, I was so absorbed in the suit that when I got notified, I was genuinely surprised.'
[A new month has begun. Point purchases have been updated.]
'It feels like more than a year since I last saw this screen. My life has been really busy.'
The time he spent in the BNHA world had been approximately one month, but it felt like twelve full ones had passed.
