Chapter 15 - The Park Confession

The park near the old bridge was not the kind of place Elena would normally go. The grass was patchy, the benches were chipped, and the river that ran beneath the bridge smelled of mildew and metal. A few children were on the swings over by the entrance, but other than that, it was quiet.

Liam was already there when she got there, sitting on the low wall near the bridge, arms hanging loosely on his knees. He watched her approach, face impassive.

"You came," he said.

"You told me to," she said. "What's going on?"

He waved a hand at her, gesturing for her to sit beside him. She hesitated, then took the seat next to him on the wall. The stone was cold under her.

"I think I know who took that photo," he said.

Her heart leapt a little. "Who?"

He glanced toward the river, eyes scanning to make sure no one was close enough to hear. "It wasn't just some creep taking random shots. It was planned. Someone wanted people to see us together."

"Why?" she asked, voice dropping.

"Because they knew it would get people talking. And because they knew it would mess with you," he said. "I heard from a guy on the soccer team that a Westbridge student has been hanging around with a couple of girls from St. Claire's. They mentioned you."

The knot of dread in Elena's stomach tightened. "Do you know their names?"

"One is Connor," Liam said.

"He's in my year, but we don't really talk. He hangs out with the same people that tend to get into trouble. The other names I don't know. But I'm guessing they're the same girls you saw at that competition."

It was too easy to connect the dots. Elena remembered their stares that day, the way their smiles were tight and unkind. She had not thought about them since, but now she wished she had.

"They're trying to drag me down," she said.

"They're trying to get a reaction," Liam corrected."If you give them one, they win."

Elena looked at him. "So what am I supposed to do? Just let them post whatever they want?"

"I didn't say that," he said. "But if you go after them publicly, it'll just make more noise. You have to be smart about it."

The way he said it made her curious. "And how exactly am I supposed to be smart about it?"

He gave a small, almost dangerous smile. "Leave that to me."

They walked back from the park together, but Elena was still not thinking clearly. She had experienced rumors before. In her old life, they had been constant. She had fought back against them at times, ignored them at others, but the results had been the same. People believed what they wanted to believe.

This time was different, in part because Liam was involved. The idea that she might bring trouble to him because of something so silly was bothering her more than she cared to admit.

When they reached her street, he slowed to a stop. "I'll take care of this. You just… keep doing what you do."

"That's vague," she said.

"It's enough," he replied.

He turned and walked away before she could push for more.

The days at school after that were strange. Rumors still swirled, of course. But something else was also happening. Connor, the boy that Liam had mentioned, seemed nervous whenever Liam was around. Elena had seen it in the hall when Liam passed him without a word, and later in the cafeteria, when Connor left the moment Liam walked in.

Bella had seen it, too. "What's going on with him?" she asked Elena one afternoon.

"Maybe he's scared Liam will sock him," Elena said.

Bella raised an eyebrow. "Would he?"

"I don't know," Elena said. "But I think Liam's got something planned."

On Friday, things shifted.

It started in the morning, when a new post showed up on the school page. This one was not about Elena. Instead, it was a short video clip of Connor talking to two girls in the back of a café. The audio was clear enough for her to hear his words.

"…yeah, I sent it to Kayla. She promised not to say it was from me. I told her it would blow up. And it did. You should've seen her face when she found it online…"

The post did not mention Elena, but it did not need to. Anyone who had seen the original photo would understand. By an hour, Connor's name was on everyone's lips, and not in a good way.

Bella almost dropped her phone when she saw it. "Liam did this, didn't he?"

Elena did not answer. She did not have any proof, but she knew.

By lunchtime, Connor was red-faced and keeping to himself. The girls from St. Claire's were nowhere to be seen, at least not in Westbridge's halls.

Elena found Liam after school, leaning against the same wall outside like he had before.

"You didn't have to do that," she said.

"I told you I would handle it," he said.

"It's going to cause trouble for you," she said.

"Maybe," he said. "But at least they'll think twice before trying it again."

There was a long pause. She wanted to thank him, but the words seemed too small for what she was feeling.

Instead, she said, "So… what now?"

He shrugged."Now you stop worrying about them. Let them fade out. They've already lost."

She stared at him, trying to read his face for some indication of what he would gain by helping her. But all she got was that same unreadable look again, the one that made it impossible to know what he was really thinking.

That night, Elena lay in bed, thinking about how quickly the story had changed. She knew it was not over. There would be more rumors, more people who wanted to see her falter. But for now, the noise had died down.

And in the quiet, she realized something.

She trusted Liam.

She did not know when it had happened. But it had.

And that, she thought, might be the most dangerous thing of all.
