Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5

UNOMA BECOMES A MEDICAL DOCTOR

THE LAST EPISODE OF UNOMA THE ORPHANAGE

The CARES organisation put Unoma in their boarding house for children. This was to ensure that Unoma could concentrate on reading her books. In the dormitory, Unoma met other children with similar problems to her own. There were few whose cases were worse than her own.

For example, there was fifteen year old Ndidi whose parents died of HIV/AIDS and whose sister was slowly dying of the disease because at a time when she was sick her father had donated his blood 💔 😢 to her. All their relations rejected Ndidi and refused to allow her to stay in their house. Ndidi and her younger brother, Amechi were then picked up by CARES. There was also eight year old Chioma who was picked up from the garbage dump where she had been left to die. Ten years old Obinna was dumped by his teenage mother who gave him to a woman to hold and pretended that she was going into the market. The woman waited for her till dusk 🌆 👏 came but she never appeared. The woman then tool the baby to a nearby Motherless Babies Home.

In the dormitory the children were given excellent training. They woke up around 6:30 a.m., did their morning duties then brushes their teeth and had their bath. At exactly 7:20 a.m. they had their breakfast and then joined the morning assembly at the primary school set up by CARES.

Unoma took the Common Entrance Examination and passed with distinction. She was posted to Federal Government Girls College, Onitsha. Unoma's aunt was contacted and told about Unoma's posting to the college. She was then informed that Unoma would no longer live in the CARES dormitory but would stay with her during holidays. She was advised to give Unoma proper care and upbringing by ensuring that she was allowed to read her books, relax, play games, 🎮 watch TV and video like any other normal child. The CARES officials pointed out that from time to time they would visit Unoma to know whether she was being properly taken care of.

Aunty Ijeoma who had long felt very sorry and ashamed of her evil 😈 ways assured them that she would see that Unoma was properly taken care of. She even went as far as apologising to Unoma. Unoma therefore had no problem during her secondary school days. Aunty Ijeoma whose male children preferred doing business to being educated did her best to encourage Unoma. Chioma who was taking the Joint Matriculation Examination into the university also encouraged Unoma. She had since repented of her wicked treatment of Unoma.

Aunty Ijeoma registered Unoma with the British Council Library. This enabled her to read many books in the library. She met students from other schools there and they shared their experiences and exchanged ideas. Unoma also visited the State Library on Saturdays.

She was advised to be serious with her studies both at school and at home. Unoma was a very hardworking and brilliant student. It was little wonder that she took the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) and passed with flying colours. She had eight Alphas and one Credit. Her result was the best in the school.

That same year she passed the Joint Matriculation Examination into the University. She scored a very high mark and therfore gained admission to read Medicine at the University of Benin. Unoma did very well at the University where she came out with First Class Honours Degree. Later she finished her houseman-ship and did her Youth Service. After that she started practising as a medical doctor.

One day Udoka her cousin ❤️ came back from his business with a very high fever and complained of stomach ache. Luckily for him, Unoma was at home and examined him.

"Quick, let's rush him to the hospital, 🏥 his appendix will soon burst," Unoma said with a sense of urgency. She quickly brought her vehicle and Udoka's wife entered with him. Unoma then drove quickly to the hospital 🏥 where she worked. With her influence she got the best surgeons to carry out the operation.

"Thank you very much my daughter, if you had not found out what was wrong with Udoka, he might have probably died," Udoka's father thanked Unoma.

"To think that er tried to deny you the opportunity of becoming a medical doctor" Aunty Ijeoma said with a heavy sign.

"No, aunty, it's past and forgotten." My daughter may God richly bless and reward you, may he give you a very nich and wonderful husband." ❤️

 "Amen, auntie."

Not quite long after this, a US- based engineer from Anioma came to ask for Unoma's hand in marriage. After studying Emma's character and making enquiries about his family background Unoma agreed because her findings were positive.

Their wine-carrying and wedding ceremonies were celebrated in style.

People talked about the ceremonies for many months. Unoma still remained humble despite her success and position in life. She did not fail to thank God for his mercies towards her and for making her what she was.
