Chapter 17 - Welcome home

The Solaran capital city loomed on the horizon, a beacon of civilization after years spent in the austere quiet of the sanctuary. Aether, his powerful wings beating a steady rhythm, descended gracefully, avoiding the bustling main gates and opting instead for a secluded, tree-lined ridge overlooking the palace grounds. Lady Lyraia and the young man, still wide-eyed with awe and a lingering tremor from their ordeal, dismounted first, their expressions a mix of utter disbelief and profound gratitude.

"We are safe here," Kael told them, his voice calm and reassuring. "Seek out the Royal Guard. Tell them you were rescued, and that I sent you. They will ensure you reach your families."

Lady Lyraia, her nobility reasserting itself even in her disheveled state, bowed deeply, her emerald eyes fixed on Kael and Aether. "Prince Kael, words cannot express my family's gratitude. You have saved my life. Valenor Duchy will never forget this." The young man echoed her thanks, tears of relief streaming down his face. Kael simply nodded, a promise in his gaze. He knew this encounter would have ripples.

As they watched the two rescued individuals make their way down towards the city, a familiar presence stirred Kael's mind. They're here, Aether rumbled, a thought, not a sound, flowing into his consciousness.

Suddenly, two figures emerged from the tree line below, moving with a speed Kael recognized instantly. One, a flash of agile movement and vibrant blue, the other a powerful, golden-maned blur. It was Seraphina and Arion, followed closely by their matured companions, Zephyr (now a magnificent Air Eagle with a wingspan to rival a small carriage, easily large enough to carry a rider through the skies) and Blaze (a truly imposing Fire Lion, its mane flickering with real flame).

Seraphina saw him first. Her eyes, wide with disbelief and then overflowing with raw emotion, fixed on Kael. The distance between them vanished in a blur as she ran, her healing magic allowing for incredible speed. "Kael!" she cried, her voice choked with tears, a sound that pierced through years of solitude. Without hesitation, she launched herself into his arms.

Kael caught her, the impact startling him slightly despite his heightened strength. Her arms wrapped tightly around his neck, and she buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing, "I missed you! I missed you so much!"

He held her, her slender frame feeling both familiar and incredibly new in his embrace. The scent of wildflowers, faint now, was still distinctly hers. He gently pulled back just enough to look at her, his hands on her face. Her beauty was breathtaking, far beyond what his memories had held. Her features had sharpened, her eyes deeper, her spirit radiating a quiet strength. "Seraphina," he murmured, his voice rough with emotion, his heart pounding in his chest. A truth he hadn't fully acknowledged in the sanctuary hit him with overwhelming force. He loved her. "You're... more stunning than I remembered. Truly breathtaking."

He felt the familiar blush creep up her neck and spread across her cheeks, her rosy hue a delightful contrast to the lingering tears in her eyes, but her eyes, though still tear-filled, now held a spark of the bold confidence he'd only glimpsed before. He could feel her joy, her relief, her fierce affection. It was a warmth he hadn't realized he craved.

Then, Arion was there, a broad grin splitting his handsome face. He pulled Kael into a crushing embrace, a bone-jarring clap on the back. "Kael! You actually did it, you madman!" Arion's own presence was larger, more imposing. His movements carried a heavy power Kael immediately recognized as magma mastery, a stark contrast to his own more fluid elemental style. Blaze, the Fire Lion, let out a deep purr, its fiery mane flaring as it nudged Kael's side, its bond to Arion palpably strong.

"And look at this!" Arion exclaimed, gesturing wildly at Aether, who regarded him with ancient, knowing eyes. "A full-grown dragon! You certainly don't do things by halves, do you, brother?"

"You've grown into quite the formidable mage yourself, Arion," Kael responded, a genuine smile breaking across his face for the first time in years. "And Blaze, you're magnificent." He turned back to Seraphina, who was now wiping her eyes, a shy smile gracing her lips. Zephyr, her Air Eagle, landed lightly on her shoulder, a silent testament to their own powerful bond.

The initial flood of emotion began to recede, replaced by a comfortable familiarity and an urgent need for answers. Kael quickly recounted the slave traders and the rescue of Lady Lyraia, emphasizing her lineage. "She's the daughter of Duke Valerius of Valenor Duchy," Kael explained. "A neutral kingdom, but a powerful one. Her family's gratitude could be... beneficial."

Arion's eyebrows shot up. "Valenor? That's quite the catch. A diplomatic coup, Kael. Queen Elara will be pleased."

Kael nodded, his gaze distant, already turning towards the larger purpose. "I'll report everything to the Queen. But there's something else. My training... it was for more than just personal power. Master Lorien, the sanctuary... they prepared me for what comes next." He looked at Arion, then at Seraphina, his voice dropping to a serious tone. "Valerius still sits on the Zunian throne. And I intend to take it back."

He paused, letting his gaze sweep over his friends, then to their powerful creature companions, and finally back to the distant mountains of Zuna. "But not with a Solaran army. Not yet. I need to go into Zuna myself. Alone, or with just Aether. There are Zunian loyalists, those who never accepted Valerius's rule. My father had connections, networks that still exist. I need to find them. Gather them. Build an army of true Zunian patriots, from within."

The enormity of Kael's proposal hung in the crisp mountain air. Arion's face tightened with understanding, while Seraphina's hand instinctively reached for Kael's arm, her worry for him evident. The reunion was joyous, but the shadowed path to Zuna had already begun.
