Seeing someone else's Tyranitar and having one of your own were two completely different feelings. Tyranitar was extremely powerful. Once it was fully grown, it would be a Pokémon that could rival the legendary birds and beasts. It was a huge boost to Natsui's team.
On the sidelines, Erika saw the domineering Pokémon and also remembered being hit by one. She felt happy for Natsui, but also a faint ache in her back.
Natsui looked at his Tyranitar with delight. He reached out to touch its hard armor and praised it for a few moments, but then decided not to use it for the next battle and recalled it to its Poké Ball. Just like at the Cianwood Gym, his main goal here was to train his weaker Pokémon. Fully evolved powerhouses like Dragonite and Tyranitar were not part of that plan.
On the other side, Bugsy took out his third Poké Ball.
"Amazing. It's been a long time since anyone has forced me to use my third Pokémon. Now, get ready for my gorgeous warrior—Scyther!"
Bugsy threw the Poké Ball, and with a flash of blue light, a Scyther appeared on the battlefield.
Gorgeous warrior?
Another dramatic nickname. But since it was coming out last, this had to be Bugsy's ace Pokémon. It was worth noting that, unlike other Gym Leaders who had traveled, Bugsy's team consisted of common Kanto and Johto Pokémon. This was likely because he had become a Gym Leader at such a young age, tying him down before he had a chance to adventure in other regions. It showed that becoming famous as a kid wasn't always a good thing.
But since his opponent was a Scyther... Natsui ran his fingers along his belt and pulled out his own Scyther's Poké Ball. If they had the same Pokémon, a showdown was a must.
"It's your turn!"
Natsui threw his Poké Ball, and in the next second, a Scyther with a scar on its forehead stood before Bugsy's.
"Oh?" Bugsy's eyes lit up. He looked Natsui's Scyther up and down, his gaze lingering on the scar. "Another Scyther? And it looks very well-raised. This is great! Now we can see whose is stronger!"
Natsui smiled slightly. "My Scyther may not have a fancy nickname like yours, but it has a unique history. Before I caught it, it lived on an island of Bug-type Pokémon. It might look ordinary, but it has the nickname 'Scar.' It once held its scythes high and fought its way from the south of the island to the north, then from the east to the west. It fought for three days and three nights without even blinking!"
Huh? Hearing this, Natsui's Scyther looked back at its trainer, very confused. When did I ever do that? Is he talking about another Scyther named 'Scar'?
Bugsy, however, didn't catch the joke. He was more interested in the island of Bug-type Pokémon.
"Excuse me, where is this island?"
Natsui had wanted to tease the cocky kid with a bad reference, but seeing that his only audience didn't get it, he sighed in disappointment. Is this the generation gap?
"That island is far away in the Orange Islands," he said, losing some of his enthusiasm. "It's easy to find, but you have to take a boat to get there."
Bugsy nodded, a thoughtful look in his eyes. As a Bug-type specialist, he was very interested.
Back on the field, at the referee's signal, the two Pokémon moved to the center. The Scyther stared at each other, their eyes filled with fighting spirit.
When the flag dropped, they moved at the same time, rushing forward and raising their scythe-like claws. In the next second, like two master swordsmen, their scythes clashed, sending sparks flying. In a flash, they swung their blades dozens of times, becoming a blur of motion.
As their slashing speed increased, it seemed Bugsy's Scyther was the first to give out. It leaped backward, out of Scar's attack range. This surprised Bugsy greatly. Just as Natsui and Erika had thought, this Scyther was indeed his ace, and he had full confidence in it. To be at a disadvantage right from the start was a huge shock. It made him realize that, unlike the challenger's first Eevee, both his Pupitar and this Scyther were well above average.
On the field, seeing its opponent retreat, Scar's eyes flashed with a cold light as it pressed forward again.
Seeing that Natsui's Scyther gave no time to breathe, Bugsy clenched his teeth and decided not to meet it head-on. "Scyther, use Double Team!"
Scyther instantly created three copies of itself, confusing Scar, which could only slash at the one closest to it. Scar's sharp scythe passed through the image, revealing it was just a shadow.
Just then, it heard the sound of a blade cutting through the air from behind. The real Scyther had hidden to the far right and launched an attack the moment Scar swung.
CLANG!
To Scyther's surprise, its attack failed. Scar had turned in time and blocked the sneak attack with its own scythe.
"It's that strong?" Bugsy frowned. He couldn't believe the sneak attack had failed.
"Scyther, use Swords Dance!"
At his command, Scyther swung its scythes and spun around. A light covered its body, greatly increasing its attack power. It seemed Bugsy was trying to break through Scar's defense with sheer power.
Seeing this, Natsui just smiled and did the same.
"Scyther, you join in too! Use Swords Dance!"
Just like Bugsy's Scyther, Scar performed a war dance, and its own attack power was greatly boosted.
Looking at the two powered-up Pokémon, Natsui looked back at Bugsy. Come on. Now that we're both buffed, let's see whose Scyther is really stronger.
