Just then, Liza let out a loud whistle. As the sound echoed through the mountains, a Charizard flew over from the distance. It soared in the sky for a few circles before diving down and landing smoothly next to her.
Liza patted the Charizard's shoulder and smiled at them. "This is my Charizard, Charla. Charla, say hello to them!"
The Charizard, named Charla, politely nodded at Natsui and Erika.
Natsui looked at the Charizard and noticed a pink bow on its head. That, along with its name, clearly meant it was a female. Tied to its back with a long rope was a small balloon and a basket filled with daily supplies and vegetables. It seemed Liza had just returned from shopping in town.
For some reason, this reminded Natsui of another Charizard far away in the Alola region that delivered milk every day. Even in different regions, some things were the same.
Liza had already climbed onto Charla's back. She turned to them and said, "Alright, follow me. Are you going to ride in my basket or on your own Charizard?"
Natsui glanced at the basket. It was already half full of supplies. It would be a tight squeeze for both of them to get in. Besides, he had his own Pokémon. There was no need to cram in with all that stuff.
"No thanks, I'll ride my own Charizard."
With that, Natsui returned his other Pokémon and took out his Charizard's Poké Ball. A flash of blue light, and his Charizard appeared before Liza.
Liza looked it up and down carefully and nodded.
"You've raised this Charizard very well. It's big and strong. It could definitely hold its own against the wild Charizard in the valley."
Comparing a trained, experienced Pokémon to wild ones might seem unfair, but Natsui knew the Charizard in the valley were exceptionally strong and not to be underestimated.
After Erika returned her Leafeon, Natsui helped her onto his Charizard's back, then jumped on in front of her.
Seeing this, Liza's eyes lit up. It was one thing for a Charizard to let its own trainer ride it, but it was rare for it to allow someone else on its back too. Given how proud Charizard usually were, this was quite an achievement.
She said with admiration, "It seems your Charizard is completely loyal to you. That's amazing!"
Then, as if remembering something, Liza chuckled. "You know, another trainer visited here before you, but his Charizard wasn't nearly as obedient."
Natsui glanced at her. "Are you talking about Ash?"
Liza was surprised that he knew the name. "Oh? You know him?"
"Of course," Natsui said, gently tapping his Charizard with his foot. In the next second, it leaped into the air. "We're good friends. In fact, we just saw each other a few days ago."
The two Pokémon soared into the sky. From up high, they could see most of the mountain range.
It was a vast and beautiful sight.
Liza steered Charla to fly alongside Natsui. She had to raise her voice to be heard over the wind.
"Charicific Valley is just ahead! It'll still be a bit of a flight. How about a race?"
"A race?"
Liza nodded. "The terrain here is pretty tricky. Let's see if your Charizard can keep up with Charla!"
So that was it. Liza wanted to test him. It made sense. Since she was friends with Clair and had heard her praise him, she wanted to see for herself what his Charizard was made of.
"No problem."
Seeing him agree, Liza's expression turned serious. "Alright then, keep up!"
At her signal, Charla shot forward like an arrow.
She's really an impulsive person...
Natsui's Charizard had heard their conversation and was already eager to go. With a command from its trainer, it shot off in pursuit.
The two Pokémon flew one after the other, diving through the mountains. The strong wind from their speed made Erika's hair fly wildly. She had to close her eyes and wrap her arms tightly around Natsui's waist to keep from being thrown off.
Her soft body was pressed against his back, and he could feel her curves. She was holding on very tight. But this was no time to be thinking about that.
Charla, familiar with the area, flew without hesitation. It would zip around a giant rock and then suddenly make a sharp ninety-degree turn. Each time, Natsui's Charizard had to slow down, carefully navigate the turn, and then speed up again to catch up.
The two Pokémon flew over stone bridges, across rivers, and through caves. But no matter how hard Charla tried, it couldn't shake Natsui's Charizard.
Liza glanced back at Natsui, impressed. He's really good! No wonder Clair, a Gym Leader from a family of Dragon-type trainers, thinks so highly of him.
Just then, the two Charizard flew out from between the mountains, and the view opened up. Charla began to slow down. In that instant, Natsui's Charizard sped up and pulled alongside it.
"Not bad!" Liza praised. "To be able to keep up with Charla, your Charizard must be very well-trained!"
She then turned and looked ahead. "Alright, we're here. This is Charicific Valley."
Natsui and Erika looked forward. Below them was a wide, clear river flowing through the mountains, with high cliffs on both sides, forming a great canyon. In the river stood dozens of huge Charizard statues carved from rock. They stared ahead with giant wings spread, looking serious and majestic, as if judging any challenger who dared to come here.
