Chapter 107 - Between Shelves and Silence

Amelia nearly jumped at the sudden sound of Alan's voice. She had been staring so intently at the sharp line of his jaw that she had not noticed he had already spotted her lingering there like an intruder. She straightened her posture immediately, clutching the plate and small dessert she had carried in as if they were some kind of shield.

"Nope. Just being your delivery girl," she said quickly, lifting the food in her hands like evidence of her innocence. "You barely touched this before the great water disaster."

Alan's eyes flicked to the plate and then back to her face. For a moment their gazes met, neither of them saying anything. Then they both looked away as if embarrassed by the brief connection. The awkwardness from earlier still hung in the air like an unwanted guest.

Amelia cleared her throat in an attempt to fill the silence with something resembling normal conversation. "Seriously, I put hours into this. The least you could do is finish it."
