Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 16

Wall Rose

Trost district

The noon sun slants in the clear blue sky.

The white-hot steam rises from a chimney of a bakery.

The bakery, a small red brick building, stood out from its neighborhood, even though it hid in an inconspicuous corner.

A mysterious charm hangs around it.

The people, as they cross by it, suddenly get attracted to the bakery, and as they stand there in a daze, tasting the freshly baked scent of the delicious bread, they unwillingly get pulled by its sweet aroma.

Inside the bakery, a mellow old-aged man works tirelessly, bringing out the freshly baked bread from the oven; he placed a new tray full of dough for bread inside the oven.

The freshly sweet aroma of the newly cooked bread spread throughout the bakery, making the few people present there salivate.

Noticing the impatient gazes of the customers, the waiter, a young boy, immediately ran to get their orders.

After a moment of waiting, as everyone's order arrived, they hurriedly started to devour it.

A contented smile appears on the old baker's face, seeing the happy smiles of his customers.

The baker loved his craft from his deep heart, and seeing the satisfied expression on his customer as they leave makes him love his passion more.

"Ting"

A bell sounds as the new waves of customers enter inside the bakery. Looking at the expectation on their faces, the old man felt more jovial.

Suddenly, the old backer's eyes landed on a young man sitting alone by the window, looking quite emotional as he tasted a piece of cake with great relish.

The young man looks like any customer of the old man, enjoying a loaf or having some cake, then after enjoying himself, sometimes even praising him as they leave contentedly.

But this young man differs; the old baker doesn't know when the young man arrives, but he does notice him when his fifth order arrives, and since then the young man hasn't stopped and continues to taste every kind of delicacy the baker has to offer.

Initially worried that the young man may not be able to pay for what he had ordered.

But looking at his fine clothes and his noble appearance, the baker hesitated but still decided to approach him and struck up a conversation, to at least find something about this mystical young man.

But as he approached, the young man, having noticed him, immediately understood his intentions and brought out a load of cash, paying triple the amount of what he had ordered, and he said to the old backer, "I am still feeling hungry, like I haven't had anything in ages." And then he ordered another serving of cakes and pastries.

Looking speechlessly at the money, the old backer grabs it and happily complies with the wishes of his customer.

After that, the young man almost ordered everything the bakery had.

Looking at the appearance of the young man, wearing a white poet shirt with deep black pants, with his dark raven hair and that attractive face, the young man looks like a noble, not the kind of gluttonous person—if anyone didn't know how much he had eaten.

The old backer, not able to drown his curiosity, approaches the enigmatic young man, who was currently looking outside of the window at the squad of garrison corps as they marched by the street.

"Sigh, times are changing." The old man sighed heavily, noticing the patrolling military police.

"Huh, how so?" The young man cursorily looks at the old backer.

Who, with his gruffy beard, arrived by his table, and looking at the serious and disciplined faces of the military forces, he replied, "In my fifty years of career, I have only once seen the military forces this serious."

"Oho, when?" The young man questioned.

The old man heavily replied, "It was five years ago, when the wall of Maria fell. And even then, the military doesn't look this guarded."

Looking at the tight formation of the garrison regiment upon the walls with cannons set there, and the frequent patrols by the military police.

A stuffing heaviness suddenly spreads in the old baker's heart.

"Hmm, you are right, old man; I also did not expect them to be so serious." The young man glanced at the top of the wall, like he could clearly see everything there.

"Well, young man, if you don't mind, I think it is your first time here." The old baker asked the young man.

"Yes." The young man replies and then takes a bite of the cake from his plate, savoring the sweetness that spreads in his mouth. He says, "Yumm, it's actually my first time in the Trost district."

Hearing this, a realized expression appears on the old baker's face; likely he has guessed something. "Are you a noble?" He suddenly asks.

"A noble?...hmm..." A pondering expression appeared on his face. "Well, you say so...if you are talking about blood, then I certainly have the royal one." The young man replies.

Hearing this, suddenly, beads of sweat gathered on the old man's face. 'R-Royal blood? Is he someone from the royal family? But t-that can't be. How can a royal family member be here?'

"U-um, sir, may I ask your name?" The old baker slightly bends his back and hesitatingly asks the young man.

"Oh." Seeing the sudden shift in the old man's behavior, the young man seems surprised, but then after pondering for a second, he instantly understands that the old man may have misunderstood something.

"Relax, old man, I am not related to the royal family. My name is Kevin Ethan."

Having heard that, the old man straightened his back, and while nervously chuckling, he said, "Oho, silly me, my age seems to be catching up to me. Don't mind—don't mind me, I should be going back to check upon the breads placed in the oven." The old man instantly turns back, his curiosity completely dosed out. 'Tch, what is happening these days? The military are suddenly getting so strict that they seem to be preparing for the breach of walls, and this gluttonous guy, is he a titan or what? How can he eat so much?'

Looking at the back of the old baker, who quickly moves to the kitchen of the bakery, Kevin wonders if his social skills have degraded after living as a titan for six months.

'Yumm, it is really delicious.' Having tasted a spoonful of cake, Kevin exclaims.
