As pure titans, most of them usually stop functioning at night, pure titan use energy from sunlight for their functioning, that's why they didn't have any need of food to survive, and that is the reason why most of them stop functioning during night.
While there are some abnormal titans who can even move during at night as they can even use moon light to continue their function.
That's why Kevin was finding another titan so he can safely use his power on him.

When Kevin got the devourer skill, he first thought about devouring other titans.
For the first Target, he chose a small titan, so even if something unexpected started to happen, he can at least protect himself.
For activating the skill, he have a congest the matetial.

Getting all the confirmation, Kevin brings his mouth towards the titan's neck placing his sharp teeth on it's neck, and then with full force, he suddenly tore a big chunk of flesh from titans's neck with a piece of spine altogether and instantly swallow it without chewing.
