Chapter 728 - Chapter 728

A heavy shadow settled over Garp's eyes, rising from somewhere deep within his heart until it blotted out their usual brightness.

Every line on the old man's face seemed etched with pain.

For all the storms he had weathered in his lifetime, this was the kind of conflict no fist could solve.

On one side stood the Marines.

He had given them his youth, his strength, and nearly his entire life.

Countless comrades had fought beside him through battles where any one of them could have died. The title Hero of the Marines carried not only decades of glory, but equally heavy responsibility.

And now that organization had suffered an unprecedented disaster.

Its forces had been devastated.

Morale was collapsing.

Confusion and uncertainty had spread throughout Marine Headquarters, while crisis after crisis continued closing in.

Sengoku's urgent summons made the desperation of the situation painfully clear.

Every line in that message weighed on Garp's heart.

But on the other side—

there was Sabo.

The boy Garp had long regarded as another grandson.

Sabo had grown up alongside Ace and Luffy, and the memories of those years surfaced one after another in Garp's mind: the three boys training together, arguing, laughing, getting themselves into trouble, then stubbornly climbing back to their feet no matter how harshly life knocked them down.

And now Sabo was a prisoner.

Seven days from now, he would be publicly executed.

Garp could already imagine the scene far too clearly.

Sabo standing on the execution platform in Marineford with that same stubborn fire burning in his eyes, refusing to bow his head even at the very end.

Just like Ace had.

The thought alone made something inside Garp twist painfully.

Marine justice.

Family.

The two forces crashed against each other inside him, tearing in opposite directions.

One was the duty he had upheld for his entire life.

The other was his unwillingness to stand by and watch another child he loved die before his eyes.

Neither could simply be discarded.

And together, they threatened to tear apart a heart that had endured more battles than most men could imagine.

In his mind, Garp could already see Marineford's execution platform rising beneath the midday sun.

He could see Sengoku standing there, waiting for him to return and once again become the pillar holding the Marines together in their darkest hour.

And he could see Luffy.

That reckless, stubborn brat would never sit still after learning what had happened.

If Luffy heard that Sabo was going to be executed, Garp knew exactly what he would do.

He would charge straight into Marineford without the slightest regard for the consequences.

Just as he always had.

Twilight slowly descended over Foosha Village.

The sea breeze drifted across the hills, but for once its familiar coolness brought Garp no comfort.

"Haah…"

A long, exhausted sigh escaped the legendary old Marine.

It carried a weight no enemy had ever managed to put on his shoulders.

Garp slowly folded the emergency order.

His enormous hands trembled almost imperceptibly as he creased the paper, each movement unusually slow.

When he finished, he tucked the document inside his coat.

But he still did not stand.

He remained seated beneath the fading sunlight, looking like a stone statue that had suddenly aged decades.

His long shadow stretched farther across the grass as evening deepened.

The loneliness surrounding him became almost tangible.

For Garp, this grief felt far more difficult to confront than any enemy's fist.

Because there was no opponent standing in front of him.

Nothing he could simply punch until the problem disappeared.

Not far away, however, the hillside was anything but quiet.

Luffy, Sanji, and Zoro were in the middle of another brutal training session.

The three of them possessed extraordinary talent, and under relentless training their progress had been astonishingly fast.

Fists tore through the air.

Sword slashes whistled across the field.

The violent currents created by their attacks collided and ripped apart the peaceful atmosphere of the hillside.

Luffy's figure shot rapidly across the open ground like a bouncing flame.

His rubber arms twisted and extended at impossible angles as he tried again and again to catch the elusive afterimages moving ahead of him.

Sweat poured down his forehead and soaked through his clothes.

Whenever he missed, he did not stop.

He adjusted.

Focused.

Then attacked again with greater speed and a more unpredictable angle.

His hunger for strength burned brighter with every failure.

On another section of the training ground, Sanji moved like a blur.

His foot swept through the air in a blazing arc, heat flaring around his leg as the force of the kick sliced through the wind.

"Diable Jambe—!"

His voice rang across the hillside, filled with fierce determination.

...

At the same time, Sanji's entire body spun at high speed.

Flames erupted around him in an instant, engulfing his leg and then spreading with the momentum of his rotation until he looked like a blazing meteor tearing across the training ground.

But just before the kick could connect, an invisible force suddenly appeared.

There was no warning.

No visible impact.

Sanji and the flames surrounding him were simply shoved aside.

"Tch!"

He lost his balance and stumbled as he landed, both feet sinking into the soft earth.

Frustration flashed across his face.

But only for an instant.

Sanji immediately corrected his stance, his eyes sharpening again as he launched himself forward without hesitation.

At the center of the training ground, an even fiercer exchange was underway.

Zoro wielded all three swords at once, his blades weaving together into a dense curtain of steel.

Cold light flashed with every swing as the three swords moved in perfect coordination, slicing apart the air around him.

"Three Sword Style—!"

With a roar, streaks of sword energy burst from his blades.

The slashes crossed through the air from multiple directions, overlapping like a deadly net.

Everything Zoro had gained from his recent training was being poured into this attack.

He had not forgotten his goal for even a second.

He would become the world's greatest swordsman.

And no matter how far away that summit still was, his determination to reach it had never wavered.

Yet his opponent was far from ordinary.

A single, far more powerful slash would repeatedly cut into the weakest point of Zoro's attack at exactly the right moment.

Every collision sent violent force surging through his arms.

His palms went numb.

His muscles trembled from the impact.

But Zoro refused to yield.

His teeth clenched tighter around the hilt of Wado Ichimonji.

The fire in his eyes only burned hotter.

In the next instant, he adjusted.

His three blades changed angles, attacking again from more difficult and unpredictable directions.

"I'm not losing again!"

Not far away, Garp sat quietly and watched the three young men.

The deep gloom clouding his expression had not disappeared.

Too many thoughts weighed on him.

Too many decisions were waiting.

But even so, when he saw the progress Luffy, Sanji, and Zoro had made with his own eyes, a trace of approval still appeared deep within his gaze.

Their talent had exceeded even his expectations.

Luffy was becoming increasingly daring and imaginative with the way he used his Devil Fruit, constantly finding strange new applications that no normal fighter would ever think of.

Sanji had begun weaving Observation Haki naturally into his kicking style, making his movements harder to predict and his attacks increasingly difficult to evade.

And Zoro's swordsmanship was advancing day by day, his understanding of the blade steadily pushing beyond the limits he had known before.

The three of them were still rough.

Still unfinished.

But they were growing at a frightening pace.

"Not enough!"

Garp's sudden roar exploded across the hillside like thunder.

All three immediately stiffened.

"Move thirty percent faster!"

His eyes sharpened.

"And hold back half your power!"

Luffy blinked.

"Huh?!"

Garp shot to his feet.

"Fighting isn't about charging in like an idiot!"

Before any of them could answer, Garp casually grabbed a boulder nearly as tall as a man.

In his hands, it might as well have weighed nothing.

He hurled it straight at Luffy.

"WHOA?!"

Luffy's eyes bulged as the enormous rock screamed toward him through the air.

At the same time, Garp flicked the fingers of his other hand.

A compressed shock wave tore toward Sanji with terrifying speed, aimed directly at a vital point.

Sanji's expression changed.

He twisted violently in midair, barely avoiding the attack.

Then Garp slammed one foot into the ground.

BOOM!

A powerful shock wave burst outward from beneath him.

The ground trembled.

Dust and loose stones erupted into the air as the impact rushed toward Zoro.

Zoro immediately abandoned his attack and brought all three swords around to defend.

The force crashed into him hard enough to drive his feet backward through the soil.

Sweat rolled down his forehead.

"Damn old man!"

The sudden increase in pressure immediately threw all three of them into chaos.

But none backed down.

Luffy twisted around the incoming boulder, stretching his body at an awkward angle before snapping back into position.

Sanji adjusted his footwork after narrowly avoiding the shock wave and immediately searched for another opening.

Zoro shifted his grip and stance, turning defense back into offense the moment the pressure eased.

Under that relentless strain, their bodies and instincts were being forced to improve.

Every desperate dodge became sharper.

Every counterattack became more precise.

Every movement wasted a little less energy than the one before it.

Their breathing grew rough.

Sweat soaked their clothes.

But no one asked to stop.

Garp watched them in silence.

Seeing the three stumble, recover, adapt, and push themselves beyond their previous limits brought a faint smile to the corner of his mouth.

It vanished almost immediately.

His hand unconsciously moved toward the emergency order tucked inside his coat.

The weight of that thin sheet of paper seemed greater than any mountain.

These kids were growing faster than he had expected.

Their potential was extraordinary.

Looking at them, Garp could see a future worth protecting.

But outside Foosha Village, the world was already changing beyond recognition.

The balance of power was collapsing.

The Marines had been devastated.

The Revolutionary Army had been crippled.

The God's Knights had stepped openly onto the stage.

And in seven days, Sabo would be executed at Marineford.

Garp's eyes darkened.

How much longer could this peaceful life possibly last?

He suddenly rose to his full height.

Under the fading light of sunset, his massive frame looked like a mountain awakening from its slumber.

For a long moment, Garp stared at the three young men still training furiously, completely unaware of how much the world outside had already changed.

Something complicated passed through his eyes.

Concern.

Hope.

And finally—

resolve.

Some things could no longer be avoided.

And whatever decision he made next, Garp knew one thing for certain.

He had to think about the future of these children as well.

Slowly, he turned away from the training ground.

His broad back carried a quiet but unmistakable determination.
