Luca's voice dropped to barely above a whisper. "About our mother. The doctors said she was responding well to treatment, that the cancer was in remission."
Matteo went very still. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying she died too suddenly. Too conveniently. Right after she started asking questions about Antonio Moretti's death."
The words stayed in the air but Matteo's voice was flat. "You think someone killed her." It wasn't a question.
Luca nodded slowly. "I think someone wanted to make sure she stopped digging into the past."
Isabella watched the blood drain from Matteo's face. She reached for his hand instinctively, offering what comfort she could.
His voice was barely above a whisper. "Why didn't you tell me this before?"
Tears gathered in Luca's eyes. "Because you were grieving. Because I thought it would destroy you. Because I was a coward. But I can't carry this secret anymore. Not when Isabella's life is in danger because of the same people who killed our mother."
