"We steal one," Matteo said, already scanning parked vehicles. He pointed to a battered minivan. "That one."
"A minivan?" she asked, disbelief breaking through her fear.
"It's unlocked. Keys are probably inside," Matteo said, jogging toward it.
"How do you know?" she demanded, chasing after him.
"Because there's a car seat. Parents always leave keys in cars with car seats."
Sure enough, when he yanked the door open, the keys dangled from the ignition.
"Get in," Matteo ordered.
Isabella climbed into the passenger seat. The dashboard was plastered with faded cartoon stickers, and a small plastic dinosaur lay on the floor mat. The innocence of it felt wrong like it belonged to a different universe than the one they were in now.
"This is surreal," Isabella muttered, her nails digging into her knees until she could feel the sting through the fabric. Her pulse was racing so hard it made her ears ring.
