"Then we will get proof," Matteo said. "Isabella, show me everything you found."
After Rafa left, Matteo locked the door and turned to her. "There's something I didn't tell you," he said quietly. "Something I found in my father's safe."
He pulled out a folded paper. "It's a letter. From your father to mine, written the night before he died."
Isabella took it with trembling hands. As she read, her blood ran cold.
"Enzo , they're coming for both of us tonight. I have hidden the ledger where only my blood can find it. If I don't survive, Isabella must be protected at all costs. She is the key to everything. -Antonio"
She looked up at Matteo, stunned. "I am the key?"
"That's why Vittorio wants you dead," Matteo said grimly. "And why I need you alive?"
Morning sunlight streamed through the curtains, waking Isabella. She sat up, confused for a moment before remembering she was in a new room closer to Matteo's, for protection.
A knock at the door startled her. "Come in," she called.
