"About who you really are," Matteo replied, his voice gentle but firm. "About why you're here. About why you remember things you shouldn't remember."
Isabella hesitated, the rose in her pocket pressing against her leg. The thorns were sharp, drawing blood that seemed to echo the cryptic message: Blood remembers what the mind forgets.
Isabella placed her hand in Matteo's, his fingers closing around hers warm and strong. As they walked back through the maze, Isabella's mind raced with questions. Vera had said Antonio Moretti betrayed the De Luca family, that he had gotten Matteo's father killed. But the tenderness with which Matteo spoke of her father suggested something different or was she seeing what she wanted to see?
"Vera Sorrentino found me at the memorial," Isabella said suddenly, needing to voice the poison that woman had left in her mind. "She said Antonio Moretti betrayed your father. That he got him killed."
