I pushed open the door to the conference room and immediately felt overwhelmed by the number of people inside. At the rear of the space, several employees sat in neatly arranged chairs. I recognized every face—the directors of accounting, sales, operations, and administration. Every one of them had been complicit in Eddie's elaborate fraud scheme, just as we had suspected.
Seated alone at the table opposite them was an employee we had initially planned to use as bait to catch the others. Our plans had changed when Austin and Monica were kidnapped, forcing us to accelerate our investigation. This particular employee had made the classic mistake of flaunting wealth far beyond his salary—designer clothes, luxury vacations, a new sports car. His loose lips and carelessness made him the perfect weak link in Eddie's operation.
