Chapter 1 - 1. Avery (7 year old)

It had been a normal day for me school and after helping my mamma with the laundry. Tomorrow is my birthday, but my dad couldn't come this year. When I heard, I cried. My mom told me it would be okay, and I believed it and hugged her. She had always been there for me.

I'm in my loft bed, staring against the wall above me. I couldn't sleep well. I decided to go downstairs to my mom, but I heard her screaming. She was never angry. What could it be? Could it be Dad? I pulled down the door handle and looked into the room. My mom was leaning against the refrigerator. I couldn't see her face. A voice came on the phone, and I recognized it. "Leave my daughter with me, and you can get a divorce," he shouted through the phone. "No, I won't," she shouted back, crying. Tears formed in my eyes. My parents were getting a divorce; they looked so happy together. She ran her hand through her hair, but I couldn't stand it anymore and ran outside.

I ran across the sidewalk and past the grocery store until I bumped into someone. "Look where you're going," he shouted, sounding irritated. "I couldn't give an answer and ran away." I saw his head turning around to look at me. "Wait," he yelled. I didn't listen, but my energy was almost gone. I was breathing heavily, and my forehead was damp with sweat. I plopped down against a wall. I don't know why I ran away so fast, but I just couldn't take it anymore. Me, that house. Everything turned out to be a lie. All that sweet stuff a week ago was just there to make me feel like everything was okay.

I felt an arm on my hand and I looked up to see the same boy I'd run into. His face seriously it wasn't angry anymore. He had black hair and looked a bit older than me. He had bright green, dark eyes. "You have beautiful eyes," I said, "Shit, I said it out loud." I slapped a hand over my mouth. I saw the corners of his mouth curl up and his lips break into a smile. It was enchanting, but suddenly it was gone. He took my other hand and stood in front of me. He was tall, especially when I'm slumped over, it's almost scary. "Why are you here?" he asked. I can still feel the pressure of his eyes on me. "I don't know."

"Tell me," he said, looking at me sternly, but a smile played on his lips.

"No," I said, I didn't want to tell him this. He had nothing to do with this.

"Why?" he asked. I was starting to get a little irritated with him. His black pants were practically pressed against my shoes. "Okay, fine, then you won't tell me." He turned around and walked away, but then he turned around and looked at me. "What's your name?"

"Avery" I said

"What's your name?" I asked. "Do you really want to know?" he said. His face made that annoying smile again. "Yes," I said. "Isaac," he said. The name sounded familiar, but I don't know where. "Are you new?" I asked. He didn't respond, turned around, and slowly walked away.
