Chapter 2 - “Fallen Angel”

"Jie, dinner's ready. Please ask Angela to come down." The two were talking animatedly when they were interrupted by Mo Jing'er's call.

"Wait a minute, Mom."

"No, the curry will get cold. And have you forgotten the promise you made to me the other day?"

Mo Jie wrinkled his nose and sighed helplessly. "Shall we go down?"

Angela nodded and, as she descended the stairs, couldn't help whispering to him, "Promise?"

"I played the computer for twelve hours and completely forgot about lunch and dinner." He shrugged, clearly not thinking it was that important. "She got angry and set three new rules."

  "Hm?" Angela raised an eyebrow.

"One, meals must be on time and in proper portions. Two, you must sleep at least eight hours a day—" He clearly didn't want to continue.

"Jie, we're good friends, right?" Angela noticed he was dragging his feet.

"—and you're not allowed to touch the computer for at least one hour a day."

  "Huh?"

"She wants me to go outside and 'play,'" he seemed a bit unhappy. "And I have to come home covered in dirt. She checks every day."

  Angela burst into laughter.

This was truly a case of one thing countering another, and only this genius's mother knew how to handle it. To deal with Mo Jie, this very childish child, one had to use extraordinary measures.

"Your mom is getting cuter and cuter."

Her tiny fingers moved at an astonishing speed across the keyboard, displaying a bunch of things she couldn't understand on the screen.

"What is this?"

"My self-created virus: Betrayal Angel."

"What did you say?" Angela asked again, afraid she had heard wrong.

"This virus program is called 'Betrayal Angel,'" Mo Jie repeated patiently.

Betrayal Angel?

"This program was the one I used last time when I entered the Interstate Bank. I improved it three times before it was finally complete. It's an independent decryption key."

"What's an independent decryption key?"

"A computer system typically needs to find its own specific cracking program. But 'Betrayal Angel' doesn't. You just input the system you want to crack, and it will automatically perform virus decomposition to find the correct password to enter."

In other words, one program can crack hundreds of programs.

"Thank goodness," she muttered to herself.

"Thank goodness for what?"

"Lucky that you haven't grown up yet."

If this thing had been invented by a cunning adult, the world would probably already be in chaos.

"What's wrong with being a kid?" Mo Jie asked in confusion.

He clearly didn't have Angela's "far-sightedness." In some ways, Mo Jie was far more childish than his peers.

"Never mind. What's next?"

He pressed a key. The computer screen first flashed a white screen, then displayed a long list of programs that appeared to be packaged, followed by a "beep" sound.

"Now enter 'Betrayal Angel.'"

Immediately, a series of records appeared so quickly it was hard to keep up. They looked like ledgers, with amounts for various financial transactions?

"January 1991, February 1991, March 1991… Found it. 1992 is here, 1993 must be on the next page." Mo Jie looked satisfied as he found what he was looking for.

Angela, standing beside him, was already stunned.

"These are the transaction records they're currently negotiating this month. Good." The young boy licked his lips excitedly.

Angela watched him frantically typing away and couldn't help but pale. The transaction amounts recorded were either missing or...

"Did you change the numbers?"

"YES!" he answered briskly. "Don't worry, I didn't mess with the parts they haven't finished yet. I only changed the parts that were already finalized. Besides, with a company as big as the Lengs, they'll have backup copies of the records and will quickly notice something's off."

"Why did you do that?"

"I wanted to catch Mr. Burke's attention." He replied without looking up, satisfied with his work. Oh, right! He almost forgot—he quickly typed his name at the bottom of the screen: "Betrayal Angel."

  *         *         *

"'Betrayal Angel'?"

Cold Yan raised an eyebrow, and sparks danced in his deep blue eyes.

Yesterday, the computer records of the entire Cold Corporation were somehow messed up, causing chaos throughout the company. Fortunately, the company had backup copies of all records from the past ten years, and it took half a day to correct everything.

The prankster even left his name behind with pride—"The Traitor Angel."

  This was too serious!

Although the intruder had not caused any actual damage, it had put them on high alert. The Cold Corporation's computer passwords were the carefully crafted work of ten computer engineering PhDs! Even if he had only tampered with some records this time, who knew what he might do next?

Within five minutes of receiving the news, Leng Yan immediately ordered an investigation into the source of the computer sabotage.

The other party seemed to have anticipated this move.

The first location they traced was Sydney, followed by London, Hamburg, and finally an American satellite—then the connection was completely cut off.

  A clever move.

There were very few people who could make Leng Yan admit defeat, but when it came to this "traitorous angel," he had no choice but to concede. That mysterious angel could hide in any corner of the world and cause trouble through the computer.

"Burke." A voice called out from outside the office.

"Come in."

The visitor was Cold Yan's chief computer engineer—William Cock. He had lazy brown eyes, thick, shiny blonde hair, and a dashing, irresistibly charming face.

"Did you find anything?"

"No. Not a single clue." William plopped down on the sofa across from him. Thanks to their nearly decade-long friendship, William dared to be so bold. "I really want to meet this guy again."

"If you meet him again, the company might not be able to handle it." He coldly reminded him.

"It's not me saying this, he challenged us first. How can you think he won't come back?" William retorted. "I admire his courage—he's issuing a challenge to you, after all."

Cold Yan snorted, his cheek twitching slightly.

"Sorry, Mr. President. Ms. Sha is here." The secretary's voice suddenly came through the intercom.

"Tell her I'm busy." He pressed the button impatiently, not wanting to see that octopus at this critical moment.

Shalinlin had been clinging to him for two or three years, relying on her beauty and the connection between the Sha and Leng families, especially having somehow won over his uncle Leng Xiu'en, and had begun to claim herself as his girlfriend.

If it weren't for his uncle's face, Leng Yan would have already given her a taste of her own medicine.

"You really don't deserve such beauty," William teased him.

"President!" A computer engineer rushed in frantically, forgetting to knock on the door. "All the computers have crashed again!"

"What!?" Two loud shouts rang out simultaneously. It was as if they had summoned the very thing they feared.

They immediately rushed to the computer room.

All the computer screens were blank, with a name being typed out at the bottom of the blank screen—

"Betrayal, Angel." As if to stir up trouble, William raised his voice, earning him a murderous glare from Leng Yan.

Almost simultaneously, the fax machine beeped to life.

It was a photo of a man no one could mistake.

"What—" Leng Yan tasted the bitter taste of speechlessness for the first time. He almost tore it down before the fax finished.

  He stared blankly.

It was him! And it must have been a photo from several years ago, because there were no scars on his face from that damn car accident.

  "Burke, look."

The computer screen displayed several large numbers.

"05091985." William read aloud. "What is this? A date?"

"May 9, 1985." Leng Yan pondered. "The year of my car accident!"
