Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Sparring, Sword Training

After listening to stories all afternoon followed by Gai Yue's famously cold jokes Zhao Wuji decided it was time to liven up the atmosphere. He dragged Oscar off to "digest dinner," which was just a euphemism for a beatdown.

Naturally, Oscar was no match for him. His sword couldn't even pierce a strand of Zhao Wuji's bear fur. Ultimately, Oscar had to call in backup his teacher.

Panting from exertion after getting toyed with by Zhao Wuji, Oscar rushed over, clutching his teacher's leg like a child appealing to a parent.

"Teacher! You saw what happened! Before you got here, Old Zhao bullied me so badly. You have to stand up for me…"

Oscar went full dramatic mode tears would've been the next logical step. Even Flender, watching from the side, was speechless.

"When did Oscar become even more shameless than I was at his age?"

Zhao Wuji was even more displeased.

"So when you need help I'm Teacher Zhao, but when you're mad at me I become Old Man Zhao?"

What none of them expected was for Gai Yue who always gave the cold "solve it yourself" type of response to actually get up.

He gently ruffled Oscar's hair and said calmly:

"As your teacher, I'll avenge you."

Flender was so shocked he literally spat out his wine.

"Did I hear that right? Gai actually volunteering to roughhouse with a kid? They've only known each other since noon and already have a full blown master disciple bond?"

Gai Yue stood, patted Oscar again, and looked at Zhao Wuji:

"Brother Zhao, it's been two years since we last sparred. Let's go a few rounds. After all, always picking on my student isn't a good look."

Zhao Wuji chuckled nervously.

"Gai, don't be fooled by this brat. I wasn't even using force!"

But internally, Zhao Wuji was uneasy. Gai Yue was now level 82 and had also acquired a torso soul bone. Zhao Wuji knew he wasn't a match anymore.

Flender, however, was thrilled.

"Gai, I'm rooting for you!"

Ma Hongjun, who'd also been on the receiving end of many of Zhao Wuji's beatings, jumped in too:

"Go, Teacher Gai! Beat him up! I support you too!"

Zhao Wuji mentally tallied scores and made a note to settle with Ma Hongjun later.

Gai Yue smiled faintly, sat Oscar down properly, and lightly tapped his foot to appear five meters in front of Zhao Wuji.

One thing Shrek Academy had in abundance was space. The courtyard outside the dining hall was more than 80 meters wide plenty of room for a duel.

Zhao Wuji accepted, seeing no way to back out:

"Alright then. It's been a while. Let's see what you've got."

"Frostmoon."

Gai Yue didn't waste words. With a soft whisper, a sword appeared in his hand.

Four feet six inches long, three inches wide, the blade was entirely snow white. Its surface shimmered with icy blue crystalline patterns, like it was forged from ten thousand year old glacial ice.

Just seeing it made Oscar feel its sharpness and chill. Clearly, Gai Yue's sword spirit wasn't just lethal it also had ice attributes. That might explain his cold demeanor as well.

Flender explained:

"That's Gai's spirit Frost moon Sword.

It can't compare with the Seven Kill Sword, hailed as the number one sword spirit under heaven, but it's definitely a top tier sword type spirit."

As Gai Yue activated his martial spirit, his eight soul rings two yellow, two purple, four black rose in radiant splendor before receding back into his body.

He clearly had no intention of using soul skills this was just a friendly duel.

If they went all out, Shrek Academy might not survive the aftermath.

Zhao Wuji wasn't about to lose face. He slammed his chest with both fists and let out a thunderous bear roar. Two yellow, two purple, and three black rings rose as he transformed his body was now covered in heavy brown fur, and his hands became massive bear paws.

His soul rings retracted, and he immediately charged Gai Yue, hoping to seize the initiative essential when facing a stronger opponent.

Gai Yue, unfazed, said coolly:

"Oscar this is your first lesson."

With that, he slashed downward.

A pure white blade of sword energy shot forth like lightning toward the charging Zhao Wuji.

Oscar stared intently this wasn't like Gai Yue's finger sword before. This was a true sword qi slash amplified by his martial spirit, on par with a soul skill in power.

Fortunately, Zhao Wuji wasn't helpless. He clapped his bear palms together, directly smashing the sword qi.

But before he could get cocky, Gai Yue's sword danced rapidly in his hands, firing dozens of sword qi waves in an instant.

Zhao Wuji had no choice but to spin like a top, smashing down with his bear paws again and again.

He managed to shatter each blade of energy but the accumulated impact made his palms sting. Two strikes even sliced into his body, shaving off a huge chunk of his fur.

It was clear Gai Yue was holding back. Had he gone all out, Zhao Wuji would've been seriously injured.

While launching sword attacks, Gai Yue explained to Oscar:

"This is the foundation of a true swordsman and its core.

What follows is a sword technique that merges blade and body into one. Watch carefully."

He charged, sword rotating as he advanced.

A powerful aura erupted.

"Frost moon Sword Technique – Third Form: Frost Petals in the Sky!"

In an instant, dozens of slashes painted the air. Sword shadows filled the sky, weaving through like deadly petals in a snowstorm.

Zhao Wuji's fur was sliced clean off in multiple places some even had frozen patches.

Clearly, the earlier sword qi lacked ice effects but these sword techniques did not.

Zhao Wuji was already going all out, trying not to be hurt, but his appearance was… comical. He was now a mostly bald bear.

"Brother Gai, I know you're standing up for your student, but don't you think you went a bit too far?

How am I supposed to show my face after this?"

Gai Yue just smiled faintly, retracted his martial spirit, and turned to Oscar:

"Well?"

Oscar grinned:

"Teacher, you were amazing!

I understood what you did, but I'll need time to be able to use it myself."

Gai Yue ignored the flattery. But Oscar's last sentence surprised him.

He understood it after watching just once?

Back then, it had taken Gai Yue a full hour just to comprehend the basics.
