"I have a question for you," Evan Yu said again as I was about to leave, as if it were something important.
"What is it?" I asked, a little puzzled.
"Do you think I will fall in love with Lila Wei in the future?" Evan Yu looked at me with a strange expression. A chill ran down my spine. Could he be reborn too?
Seeing my stunned expression, Evan Yu reminded me, "Once, when you were drunk, you were spouting nonsense in my car, telling me to give up on Lila Wei and not to compete with Hugh Pei. I've always felt that wasn't just drunken rambling."
That scared me. So it was my own drunken slip-up that revealed some things from my past life.
I secretly breathed a sigh of relief, then smiled. "I was just talking nonsense. You and Hugh Pei are good friends who grew up together. How could you both fall in love with Lila Wei? With your relationship, even if you fell for the same woman, you would definitely choose friendship, right?"
Bullshit! In our last life, you two were practically at each other's throats, like two male lions fighting for the throne in the animal kingdom.
Evan Yu's lips curved slightly upwards. "Perhaps."
With that, he went to his car and drove away, leaving me stunned in the parking lot for a while. What did "perhaps" mean? Could it be that Evan Yu had already fallen for Lila Wei and was just trying to restrain himself?
Regardless, that was the fated love tribulation for those two men. I was about to divorce Hugh Pei and would be out of the picture, a carefree bystander.
I just wondered when Hugh Pei's divorce papers would arrive.
I waited for two whole days without seeing any sign of the divorce papers. I even went to the company specifically, only to be told that Hugh Pei hadn't been in the office for the past two days and was nowhere to be found.
Could he be at the hospital with his future father-in-law? I went to the hospital again. After asking for Victor Wei's room number, I went to the door.
Victor Wei was asleep. Lila Wei was on the phone. When she saw me, she said softly into the phone, "I know. Thank you for your help with my father's situation. I'll find a way to pay you back the four hundred thousand."
Oh, it was Hugh Pei.
Since Hugh Pei was on the phone, he definitely wasn't at the hospital. I turned to leave.
"Sis Zoe!" Lila Wei called out to me, getting up and chasing after me.
"Is there something you need?" I asked with a forced smile after being stopped by Lila Wei.
As she got closer, I smelled that familiar perfume, the same one Eva Liu had taken home.
This scent would sometimes linger on Hugh Pei, sometimes in his car. I knew that every time I smelled it, it meant they had just been together.
I also knew why Lila Wei was willing to use the perfume I gave her. It was a silent provocation.
Lila Wei tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Her face, full of collagen, was flushed with a healthy pink, and her beautiful, large eyes looked misty and wet, truly lovely.
"I borrowed four hundred thousand from President Pei for my father's heart surgery. I felt I couldn't hide this from you," she said, looking at me sincerely. "I will definitely pay you both back."
"He won't make you pay it back," I said, holding up my Lana Marks clutch and waving it gently, my tone still gentle. "And I don't need you to pay me back either. It's less than the price of a handbag. I'll just consider it a good deed."
Lila Wei's expression changed slightly. Her eyes scanned my clutch, a hint of jealousy in them.
I was taken aback by her look. Before, when I had intentionally or unintentionally flaunted my wealth, she had never shown such a look. Back then, she was still with Julian Qi, and her words and actions were full of a young girl's innocence and simplicity.
But she quickly regained her composure and said with neither servility nor arrogance, "Even if it's just the cost of a meal for you, I should still pay it back. What's borrowed is borrowed. Sis Zoe, goodbye."
She then returned to the room to continue watching over Victor Wei.
I stared at her for a few seconds, speechless. Hadn't Hugh Pei told her we were getting a divorce?
Hugh Pei was about to be with her openly. What was this little bit of money? Even if she wanted to pay it back, Hugh Pei would never accept it.
But that was their business. I couldn't control it.
After leaving the hospital, I drove to the private investigator's office. He had made a trip to City C and said he had found some clues.
"This is her file," the investigator said, handing me some documents and photos. "She has a husband and a son, but their relationship is strained. They've been separated for a few years and are reportedly in the process of divorcing."
"Do you have her husband's contact information?" I asked, looking at the photo of the man. He was short, had a scar on his face, and was holding a cigarette, clearly not a decent person.
"I do. I've tried to contact him, but he's very aggressive. He doesn't seem to care at all that his wife is having an affair with another man," the investigator said.
It seemed this couple was a tough nut to crack. Logically, a man who found out he was being cheated on would be furious and would try to find his wife to teach her a lesson.
I needed to find a way to meet that man and have him deal with Zhao Sufang.
After parting with the investigator, I drove home. On the way, my phone buzzed with several messages. I glanced at them; they were from Ginny Deng on WeChat.
I pulled over and opened her messages: "That vixen has finally been exposed! She's not pregnant at all!"
Then came several pictures, including Zhao Sufang's personal and marital information, and a physical examination report.
The report clearly stated that Zhao Sufang was not pregnant.
I was so excited that I immediately called Ginny Deng back. "Jing'er, you're amazing! How did you get it?"
"That vixen wasn't just stringing your dad along; she was also registered on various dating sites. I made an account too, pretending to be a successful, widowed, single golden bachelor, and she took the bait," Ginny Deng said triumphantly. This method was brilliant!
"How did she believe you so easily?" I was surprised.
"Women like her are all about money. I just had to flaunt my wealth, right? I sent her a few big red envelopes as soon as we connected, and she even called me 'my dear darling.' Ugh, I almost threw up," Ginny Deng said with disgust. "I feel like my phone is contaminated."
Her words made me laugh. I generously promised, "You've helped me out big time. Pick any phone you want, it's on me!"
Hearing this, Ginny Deng immediately said, "I'm going to pick one out now," and hung up.
I had intended to go home, but with this result, I returned to the hospital to tell my mom.
As expected, my mom was overjoyed. Her precarious trust in my dad was slightly restored. "That woman is definitely trying to set your dad up. I won't fall for it!"
"That's right. My dad's not that kind of person." I was also in a good mood. Now that it was confirmed Zhao Sufang wasn't pregnant, her arrogant leverage was significantly weakened.
