"Mom, these kinds of reports can be forged. Don't believe her," I said, quickly snatching the paper.
My mother nodded numbly, then stood up to leave, but the next second, she fainted.
"Mom!"
By the time I got my mother to the hospital, she was quickly wheeled into the emergency room. After a series of tests, the doctor told me my mother had an arrhythmia.
Back at the tea restaurant, she must have been severely agitated by Zhao Sufang.
Fortunately, my mother's condition wasn't too serious. A few days in the hospital and some proper care afterward would be enough.
In the private room, I looked at my mother sleeping on the bed, my mood incredibly foul. In my past life, she had gone through all this without ever telling me, suffering so much pain alone.
I was not a good daughter. But thankfully, fate had given me a chance to make amends.
I drifted off to sleep without realizing it, only to be awakened by a voice from the next room. A man was yelling, "Hey, I don't need to be hospitalized! And what surgery?! You're all just worrying for nothing, wasting money!"
The voice sounded somewhat familiar, but I was too lazy to get up and look. I just rolled over and went back to sleep.
"Mom, I'm going to get you some breakfast," I said the next morning after washing up, preparing to go buy some food.
As I passed the private room next door, I saw a few familiar faces.
Lila Wei and Eva Liu were gathered around the hospital bed, where Victor Wei was lying. The family was chatting.
"Madam!" Eva Liu spotted me and came out happily. "What are you doing here? Are you not feeling well?"
"Auntie Liu, you don't work for my family anymore. You don't have to call me 'Madam.' Just call me Zoe," I said with a slight smile, my gaze shifting to Lila Wei.
Lila Wei also smiled and came out. "Sis Zoe, I didn't expect to see you here. My mom told me she used to work at your house. I was so surprised!"
My smile grew even more gentle. "Yes, we're so destined to meet. What's wrong with your father?"
Victor Wei must have recognized me too; I was the unlucky one his brother had knocked unconscious with a stick. He looked a bit embarrassed and quickly averted his gaze.
"Heart problem. He needs surgery," Lila Wei said, glancing back at her father.
"That serious?" I was a bit surprised. "Is there anything I can help with?"
Eva Liu said, "Zoe, you're too kind. Thank you for your offer. Lila Wei found a friend to help, so we're fine for now."
I sneered inwardly. It seems Hugh Pei rushed back in the middle of the night a few days ago for this, right?
Lila Wei looked at me, her face still wearing a gentle smile, but her eyes were no longer as innocent as before.
Little did she know, she saw me as a rival, but I couldn't care less. My plan was to wait for Hugh Pei to ask for a divorce.
"Alright, Auntie Liu, I'm going to buy breakfast for my mom first. She's also in the hospital with a heart problem," I said politely, waving to Eva Liu before turning to leave.
As I reached the elevator, I waited expressionlessly for the doors to open, only to see Evan Yu appear before me.
He was wearing a white coat, holding a medical chart, and his usual elegant gold-rimmed glasses. His demeanor was as cool as ever.
Seeing me, he frowned. "What are you doing here?"
"My mom's sick," I said, equally surprised. "Why are you back already?"
"Finished the exchange program early," Evan Yu said as he stepped out of the elevator and stood in front of me. "What's wrong with your auntie?"
I told him about my mother's heart problem. He nodded. "Yes, people with heart conditions need to be especially careful about rest, and emotional state is also very important."
"I know. Alright, Dr. Yu, you go on with your work." I subconsciously glanced at Victor Wei's room.
When did Evan Yu fall in love with Lila Wei? Logically, he had already interacted with her a few times and should have been moved, right? This time, with Victor Wei's hospitalization and surgery falling under his responsibility, they would inevitably have frequent contact, and sparks of love would surely fly.
But then I thought I was being a bit mean. Evan Yu had done nothing to me. Why was I always thinking of pushing him into the fiery pit of love?
To put it bluntly, I just wanted to cause trouble for Hugh Pei.
After buying breakfast and returning, I passed by Victor Wei's room again. Unexpectedly, Evan Yu was still there, talking to them. When he noticed me at the door, he glanced over.
I quickly walked away.
After my mom finished her breakfast, my dad arrived. When he learned that my mom had fainted from anger and was hospitalized, he was filled with guilt. The moment he entered the room, he slapped himself twice and swore that he had never had relations with Zhao Sufang, that it was all a setup.
I quietly slipped out of the room. A couple's problems are best discussed in private.
I went to the stairwell and sent a message to Hugh Pei: "My mom is in the hospital."
He replied quickly this time: "Send me the address."
I sighed. I really felt that Hugh Pei was so busy. He had to arrange surgery and provide financial support for his little lover's father, and now he had to come to the hospital to visit his mother-in-law.
And to top it off, their rooms were right next to each other.
"What are you doing here?" Evan Yu's voice came from behind me. I turned around; he was standing at the entrance to the stairwell.
"Nothing, just getting some fresh air," I replied.
"Victor Wei's surgery will cost around four hundred thousand. Did you know that?" he asked.
How would I know? He wasn't my father. I said coolly, "I don't know. What's it to me?"
Evan Yu actually had the nerve to smile. He walked down a few steps and leaned against the railing, facing me. "Community property. Half of it is yours."
Meaning Hugh Pei paid for it.
Child's play. Hugh Pei was willing to give everything for this little "white flower." Evan Yu would also experience this kind of madness in the future.
I retorted, "So you're saying I should go ask Lila Wei for it back?"
"That works too," Evan Yu nodded.
"Works my ass!" I cursed at him, then sat down on the steps with a plop, muttering in confusion, "Didn't Erhua just get demolished? Does he need Hugh Pei's money?"
The demolition compensation Victor Wei received was enough for several surgeries.
Evan Yu told me, "They used the compensation money to buy a new house. It's all gone."
So this guy wasn't discussing the patient's condition with them just now; he was gathering intelligence? I was genuinely touched. I looked up at him and smiled. "Thanks for clearing that up."
Compared to Hugh Pei and Lila Wei's affairs, I was more worried about Zhao Sufang right now. I asked Evan Yu to help me find a caregiver for my mom. As for me, I had to find a way to deal with that vixen.
Evan Yu didn't refuse, just told me to bring the cat back to him when I had time.
After leaving the hospital, I went to find my strategist, Ginny Deng. She would definitely have more ideas about this than I did.
After I told her about my father's situation, Ginny Deng's expression turned serious. "That vixen wants to marry into your family and become your stepmother."
"I thought she wanted money, but then she threw a pregnancy test report at me," I sighed. "Now I have to find a way to make her hand over the negatives and confirm whether she's actually pregnant."
