Chapter 17: The Wesenrein and Monroe's Abduction
The scent of exotic spices and roasted coffee beans, a familiar and comforting aroma, was completely absent. In its place was the bitter, coppery smell of violence and fear. Adam's heart hammered against his ribs as he stood in the doorway of the spice shop, his eyes sweeping over the devastation. Jars of herbs were shattered on the floor, their contents mixing into a chaotic, earthy sludge. Shelves were overturned, and the cash register lay on its side, its metal casing dented and broken. This wasn't a robbery. This was personal.
"Of course. The minute we think we've got a handle on the global, royal conspiracy, the local hate group decides it's their time to shine. It's like a villain of the week convention, and we're the unfortunate party hosts."
"Monroe! Rosalee!" Nick's voice was a guttural shout, his face tight with concern. He moved through the wreckage with a speed that defied his usual stoicism, searching for any sign of his friends. Hank and Renard followed, their own expressions mirroring Nick's.
Adam, however, was already a step ahead. His System's internal database had flagged this event long ago. He knew the Wesenrein, a radical Wesen group that believed in the purity of Wesen blood and the superiority of their kind, would see Monroe's relationship with a Grimm as an abomination. Their actions here were a clear prelude to a ritualistic abduction, a twisted form of "purification."
"They're not here," Adam said, his voice flat. "But they were. This was the Wesenrein. And they took them. This isn't a random act. They're going to use them as bait. We need to move. Now."
The team's faces were a mix of anger and cold fury. Renard's Zauberbiest power flickered in his eyes, a dangerous, barely-contained storm. "The Wesenrein. Disgusting. They are a stain on our kind. They believe their purity gives them a right to do this? They're nothing more than thugs with a warped ideology."
Adam nodded, his mind already racing. "They'll be somewhere symbolic. A place of 'purity' for them. An old slaughterhouse, a decrepit church, a warehouse on the docks... somewhere they can perform their little ceremony."
Monroe and Rosalee, meanwhile, were being dragged through the dark, cold interior of an abandoned warehouse. Monroe, his woge-form barely contained, struggled against his ropes, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs. He was a pacifist by nature, a gentle soul who preferred clocks to combat, but a fierce, protective instinct for Rosalee surged through him.
"This is madness!" Monroe spat, his voice muffled by the gag. "You think this makes you pure? You're just a bunch of bigots!"
Rosalee, her eyes wide with terror but her mind still sharp, managed to find a sliver of broken glass and began to subtly saw at the ropes binding her wrists. She wasn't helpless. She was a Fuchsbau, a master of potions and remedies, but she was also a survivor.
The Wesenrein leader, a powerfully built Blutbad with a sneer of contempt, struck Monroe across the face. "Silence, Blutbad! You have defiled your bloodline with a Grimm, and now you will pay for your sins. You and your disgusting Fuchsbau will be purified. A new age of Wesen purity will begin with your blood!"
Just as the Wesenrein leader raised a ceremonial blade, a thunderous crash erupted from the far end of the warehouse. The doors burst inward, revealing Adam, his eyes glowing with an ethereal light, followed by Nick, his face a mask of primal Grimm fury. Hank and Renard were right behind them, guns drawn, their expressions radiating a dangerous, controlled anger.
"Hey there," Adam said, his voice deceptively calm, as he strode toward the leader. "I'm sorry to interrupt your little blood sacrifice, but my friends and I have a strict 'no human sacrifices' policy. Also, Monroe's a pacifist, and I'm pretty sure he'd have a lot to say about your choice of ceremonial knives. Very tacky."
The Wesenrein leader snarled, his eyes wide with a mix of surprise and hatred. "Grimms! You dare to intrude on our sacred rite? You will not leave this place alive!"
The battle was swift and brutal. Adam, with his enhanced speed, was a whirlwind of motion, disarming Wesenrein members with a series of precise, non-lethal strikes. Nick, channeling his inner Grimm, was a force of nature, his movements a blur of rage and purpose. Renard, his Zauberbiest power fully unleashed, was a terrifyingly efficient fighter, a true prince of darkness and violence.
Adam, seeing the leader about to lunge at Monroe again, activated his Aura of the First Grimm. The air in the warehouse suddenly grew heavy, the flickering lights seeming to dim as a wave of primal, ancient power emanated from Adam. The Wesenrein leader froze, his woge-form faltering as a deep, involuntary respect and fear washed over him. He was a predator, but Adam was the apex predator, the very origin of their fear.
It was enough. With a single, fluid motion, Adam disarmed the Wesenrein leader, knocking him to the ground. Monroe and Rosalee, now free, scrambled to their feet, their eyes wide with a mix of terror and relief.
Adam looked down at the subdued Wesenrein leader. He didn't want to kill him, but he also didn't want to let him go. He knew what he had to do. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small vial. With a quick, clean motion, he pricked the man's arm and a single drop of blood entered the vial.

[System] Alchemical Vial Effect: Enhanced Empathy Potion. Grants a temporary ability to understand the emotional state of a target Wesen, revealing their motives.
Adam looked at the vial, a small, triumphant smile on his face. He'd saved his friends, and he'd gotten a new power to boot. Not a bad day's work. "See?" he said, turning to Monroe and Rosalee, who were now clinging to each other. "I told you we'd get you back. Now, let's go home. I need a shower. And a pizza. And a long, long nap."
